    I can't express enough how enjoyable watching this is. Perfect pace, thoroughly explained case studies. It may seems like to much theory but all the theory is 100% necessary to deal with the particular problem... Perfect videos in every sense.

    I am so impressed with someone who actually knows what he is talking about. I am a retired aircraft mechanic/ Avionics for 43 years and just had my 06 envoy die on me going slow pulling into a lowes. No bumps but just died and had it towed to a shop that after 4 weeks sent it to another specialty shop who could not fix my problem . I finally had it towed home and I went to work on this and believe me I wish I would have found this video before I fixed it would have saved me much time. I had to learn the complete system but the shop that could not fix my car gave me any print I needed to get it fixed. My problem is almost exactly what your talking about but mine was really bad. I checked every ground and power to bcm first. wish I would have checked data line first because I was getting no data at all on the line( Luckily I have an oscope} my son brought over a ob2 reader and also would not connect. I had to find out what is either killing the data or could my bcm be bad. All these fancy modules they put in to control the car are cheaply made and can cause major issues like mine. What I found was under the cover of my back tail gated was the module for all control of the back door which the data lines run to. I disconnected it (this is after having to find every module that could have done this but thankfully when I opened the back door the radio came on then I knew it had to be back there. The module shorted out and took out the data line but when I disconnected it I got it back. I know I have to replace this but can continue troubleshooting.
    I hooked up my sons reader and got data but like you said nothing of help. Almost most of my stuff now worked except the RR and LR windows and sunroof would not work. I rang everything and all was good which said the Body control module was partially bad. I ordered a new one and all my complete systems where now working great but when I went to crank I got nothing. long story short when I went to do the recognize my key procedure it would do as everyone posts
    After my first turn of the key to crank then let off waited 10 min worked as advertised but still not crank. they say it can take up to 4 times to get it to recognize key. The second time worked as it said security light goes out after 10 min wait 10 seconds try to crank. On my third time the flashing security light went solid and thought oh its going to crank this time. Nope when I went to crank it the third time it locked me out and on the radio said locked. I had found out that if you ever change any body control module you have to either take it to the dealer and get it reprogrammed by them or like me I just ordered my own test equipment I can do on mine and so many other type cars.
    I said I was and aircraft mech not car but after learning what I did and seen this video I had to tell you my story. I will make sure I subscribe and watch all your videos you sir are a steely eyed missile
    man because you know what your talking about with loads and electronics and any mechanic should be blessed to have you teach them. remember my car was out almost 6 weeks and I had to fix it so I know there are hackers out there. thanks again

      awesome story! That is sometimes what it takes right? When something you own breaks down, you are forced to learn the system and then troubleshoot it yourself. As you learned, very, very few garages can actually troubleshoot problems. I call them "parts changers" lol. Thanks for the sub!

    Absolutely a phenomenal video right here. When dealing with a crank no start(notice I made the differentiation) One of the first things I want to know is...Is the computer talking or is it down? That first insight is FREAKING huge when it comes to crank no starts, I can not emphasis that enough. You can also check to see if the PCM is controlling the fuel pump relay coil and there are so many paths to follow when you can no longer rely on your scan tool.
    I'm speechless, very good video Paul

    Hi Paul, just a though, the battery problem and alternator disconnected etc, think you said the problem occurred when it was being driven down the road, personally I would put another pcm /ecu on there with the charging disconnected first, then check the alternator output afterwards, if it's overcharging due to prob voltage regulator fault, would that have cooked the ecu, worth checking, but I believe you have found the problem anyway....good video - Fred Nr London uk.

    Great video. The reason why you were showing megaohms on the second signal wire at the end is because you had the scope still hooked up so possibly using that to go to ground. After you took it off, it stayed OL. Keep up the great work.

    Hey SD, I just wanted to say Ive been turning wrenches for a couple days. Im always learning and or being refreshed from time to time. Age does that to ya. You'll learn that chapter soon enough trust me. Anyway I just wanted to say thanx for sharing your gift and your knowledge. You know your stuff, but more over you are able to convey that and teach it to others in a way it can be learned. That is a gift. An asset many dont have. To your students who in this mans classes.... If you are being taught by this man its a gift take advantage of it. I may have lied a little about the length of time Ive been turning wrenches. I will say this. I recently discovered I can say I been doing it for over 30 years. And I dont feel near as old as compared to saying Ive been doing this over 40 years. Both are true so im going with the lower from now on. Point is, I can learn something from im sure every video you have made. Im going to drop by your web site soon and throw a couple of things at ya., In the mean time thanx for doing what you do. If nothing else any of your students who stay in the field will at least be good where they are. More on that as well. Take care SD/..RT

The other is it is very interesting to me how things like this work. Now I want the drivability problems just so I can get more exp. Like you found a little loose wire because he thought there was a short or something or the computer you know I just can't think of the right words but who knows I pushed in something in my car a little bit ago and it was leading to the fuel surge by the way I have no idea what that is and it is connected to I can't think of the name right now. I got a brain fart this was earlier today but I was still scared to connect my battery because I wanted to watch more videos until I was fully satisfied so now you gave me a third way and none of them include more money this is incredible thank you

    Hi Paul. Just wanted to say your actually the best auto electrician on RUclips. Believe me I've seen all the other technicians on RUclips. Keep it going and stay grounded. A side from telling you how good you are now 😉 is there anychance you could do a video on why you would have low voltage on injector feed wires? I'm suspecting a bad block ground. I'm gonna do that test you did with the test light today connected to battery neg and engine block and crank it over. Is does start and run but while driving it goes into limp home mode. Anyways, if I don't hear from you, keep up the good work and keep educating us.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  Год назад

      thanks so much! Low voltage on injector feed wires all the time? What type of injection system? GDI or PFI? What exactly are you seeing and under what conditions?

    • @michaelcox2648
      @michaelcox2648 Год назад

      @@ScannerDanner Hi Paul. Thanks so much for your reply back. I'm actually watching your 1993 Gm 3.1 part 1 case study now. So much information 👍really appreciate it. It's a GDI system with sequential injection system, 4 separate feeds and 4 separate controls on injectors. 1.2 volts key on engine off and 5v engine on and driving in all conditions.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  Год назад

      @michaelcox2648 okay cool, you can't check GDI injectors for power like you do on PFI systems. The ECM switches power on from a boost capacitor that's over 50v initial, then its throttled back.

    • @michaelcox2648
      @michaelcox2648 Год назад

      @@ScannerDanner Are ok. Does that mean it must be a PFI System then? I checked out the haynes manual and it says direct injection yet I connected my multi metre to battery neg and back probed all 4 injector plugs and measuring 1.2v's and 5v's.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  Год назад

      @michaelcox2648 no that's definitely a GDI and that's probably l a bias voltage you're seeing if that was key on engine off

    I've already posted this once before. You briefly touched on GM wiring in parallel, an oil pressure switch. I first ran into that, while in tech school on if I remember right a 1986 Pontiac Fiero....yeah, that's right....60 degree 2.8liter RWD Fiero of all vehicles ever built, haha. That oil pressure switch also supplied a ground to the storage compartment light. You talk about a bear of a vehicle to drive, thank god it wasn't mine.

    Paul, Great Video, I would have externally feed 5V with current limiting resistor at ECM on reference wire and checked rest of the 5V ref wire.. if i get 5V on rest of the wire, then that means my ECM is bad(otherwords, manually tweaking 5v reference is able to be supplied to all other sensor reference wire), if i dont get 5V on rest of the wire, then there is a short to ground or ECM is bad.. other technique is to disconnect ECM and supply externally fed 5v with current limiting resistor...

    @DeMacChannel 6 лет назад

    Omg scanner danner you won't believe it but you called it I went through every single protocol that you said that didn't include the 5:00 amp or 5 volt shortcut we did lead to the same thing the ECM. This is so crazy and believe it or not My First Love with a career was computer and Diagnostics but it wasn't so popular in 2001 at least I didn't know. So I went to the construction union I mastered the art of taping real fancy name drywall finisher. Ever since I bought my first GMC ever 3 months ago it didn't have problems till about 3 weeks ago and check this out. What were the final two things you said if you recall you said it's probably not from the owner or it's probably from how it got fried in the battery blew up. Well long story short could have saved you a whole hell of a lot then reading everything I said but like you it's a must you know how you got there especially when you're teaching somebody. You know I appreciate you taking the courtesy and dedication helping others so I appreciate you for that very much. Because it is very important to figure out how we got A2Z but what about the other 25 letters of the alphabet. Okay so when I bought the GMC 1994 GMC Sierra Stepside 1500 short bed I fell in love. Okay so whoever had it before me make sure that the battery had to go like backwards. So my friend wears glasses no offense anybody. Did what you said put them on in reverse but the negative or the positive to positive with the negative it was a 4th of July but check this out not only that, I did what any other friend would do and is yell at your friend for what the hell he just did to your car you know that's bad the Sparks that is. So I duplicated his stupidity July all over again in a matter of seconds. From there on it took a few days then boom stops while I'm driving. I change one of the relays the fuel pump relay I thought that was it then I changed all four relays that are behind the glove compartment I got lucky in finding that. So I changed one because I didn't want to take out that metal bar so then I did I had to change them all they were right there because the circus that were burnt where 87 in the middle and 87 on the left you know hot and not negative and positive. So of course you know I went next because I did go to the fuses in the first place but I couldn't find the big ones which I found out the recalled relays. So none of the little baby fuses we're broken the resistors inside of it. So then there's two silver ones they have the 30 amp so I just replace both of those and I wiggled the fuse box from behind it lo and behold it started. Problem solved or is it? Sure isn't so it dies again in middle of driving another hundred and $130 for the tow truck. So what's my next evaluation? I find Loose cables oh wait a minute wait a minute I saw how to crank or whatever and it was for the distributor cap. So I do that problem solved again. Yeah right. Okay the next day because I've been cranking it so much I figured if the battery doesn't have enough volts to spark by the way my friends and everybody else were congratulating me for trying this on my own but there were throwing in some input like do you have gas you know those type of questions that kind of go underneath your skin there are other saying you're stupid do you have gas you know stuff like that LMAO they don't mean no harm. So I start to believe them I go put gas no go. And then I take out the battery and I leave it out these last few days cuz now I'm up until 2 days ago and I've been on RUclips on your Channel glued. And it rang a bell so well when I saw your channel on ignition bypass diagram or whatever. That was so informative so great but it led me to Nowhere still not cuz of you but because it pretty much brought me back. So you said everything and I could have did that off top but I just jumped in and like you said it's hard to pick where you jump in from. So I command you in the way you teach you are so good and I am going to switch careers and I am going to become a current technician mechanic which I knew nothing of but I love computers and knowing cars is a must in your life and I can always make side money put in drywall and making it look pretty before the painter comes in and steals my credit. So I will let you know more tomorrow because I have two more tricks left from you guys. I have I'm sure a second key because the first one probably got lost or something or I have the original key but what I'm trying to say is about a month before I bought it off the auction the guy says somebody tried to steal the car but didn't get nowhere but did succeed and breaking the ignition Barrel or what not cylinder keyword. So I was watching your Channel and an old man channel. I'm sorry I'm just rambling. But you know what I was trying to see how to make a fast light you know a lead light and so this part that I had in my hand this whole time thank God I didn't lose it it's the security whatever you call it box they have two relays inside of it and a chipboard and I guess that's where you can shortcut and sneak and put the keys Little chip inside of it so I can bypass and think that there is a key in there at all times. So that's what I'm going to do tomorrow you also throw in my head about the security and about the check engine light how it didn't come on or Went Away you know in the position did it turned on at it was crazy it's like I started thinking of all this stuff while you were saying it but as you were completing what you were saying you are finishing up the diagram of the circuit in my head so it's like the picture came boom boom simultaneously as you were saying it I love this type of stuff this will keep me busy the rest of my career I am never getting rid rid of this 1994 GMC Stepside V8 5.7 350 block. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow I got those two things to work on I'm not a cheap ass but I broke up with my girlfriend when she broke up with me kick me out a friend had a house available it's got to take care of it I'm getting back on my feet I started my own company with the drywall stuff my partner took off right away got on drugs he was my cousin. Left me in a tough position and just like a car's dome light the light bulb went on and I just started paying attention to you and it's very humbling and I don't care who else is reading this because you inspire me and you did inspire me 2 do it myself teach others, in detail exactly the way you would want someone to talk to you and teach you. Thank you for having patience and virtues with what you're saying. I appreciate you brother thank you very much enjoy yourself and take care and keep preaching the good work

I'm getting about 3.65volts at the ECM for the 2 GMLAN, and I'm getting 12.6v at the wire coming from the transmission to the ECM in every gear. The output to the fuse block is getting 0v when I try to start. I can't find the specs on what I should be seeing under normal condition, Please help!! thank you.

    These videos are great. But I do have a specific issue. I have a 91' Buick Park Avenue. I manually checked the codes (check engine light solid) it through multiple codes but the one that really stood out was code 42 (Ignition Bypass Circuit Error). My car will shut off sporadically with a loud click and the engine dies (no chugging). I have replaced the cam sensor, crankshaft pos sensor, ICM, MAF, IAC, and the alternator. Battery tested good and so did the coil pack hot and cold.

    I have a 92 Oldsmobile cutlass with the same engine and i actually had almost the same problem only i had a start every few cranks and then it wold die. The ecu had the same burning smell but no burn marks and still had a check engine light. so far new ecu, had a bad injector, I rebuilt the crank sensor harness to the ignition control plate behind the coils because it was shorting out. Fixed few random vacuum leaks and replaced a few sensors but cant blame her shes over 350.000 miles old lol

    I just looked over 2001 year Volvo door module circuit board, as it didnt control what it should (this was after i looked wires) and it look ok. So there was nothing that i could help on it, but add new part. Well i get one from car dismantler and it worked ok, i take it a part and there where lot of tarnich.
    So my take yeah you cant just look part and plame it you need to test it.
    p.s. ofcorse i clean it before reliseing the car to owner.
    And great e-book Paul! You should translate it ;)

    Paul,
    My guess as to what fried the computer is/was a super high reverse current of the battery voltage(no doubt due to one of your guys reversing the jumper cables & also blowing up the battery). Almost all electronic designs use back EMF(electromotive force)protection diodes to do just that; protect the down-stream devices in a circuit which should result in blown fuse. Too much current though and even the diodes explodes. Paul Harvey --and now the rest of the story- why the org no-start?

    hi scanner danner, I'm new to your channel, very good job and very informative, when you was checking continuity to ground on the reference wires and you found a number on the right pin wasn't this due to having the yellow probe still atached to something that you probed the a/c pressure sensor with?

  • @BrettyUK
    @BrettyUK 11 лет назад

    Did you get 9m ohms on the short to ground check because the scope was still connected to the pressure sensor plug so you was reading resistance through the scope?

    My question is, during the short to ground test.. in my mind I’m wondering if the reference is shorted to a sensor ground supplied by the computer would you still be able to read continuity with the computer unplugged?

    The reason you were reading 9M ohms on the 5 volt reference was because your meter was connected at the other end.

  • @tyleroxford602
    @tyleroxford602 6 лет назад

    When checking for a 5v reference, would it not be easier and faster to go straight to PCM and unplug the connector. Instead of starting with unplugging every sensor. If you start at the PCM and unplug the connector, you could then check the 5v reference at the computer. If you have a 5v reference with the computer connector unplugged, then you know there is a problem after the computer and that the computer is good. I would think that starting with the computer would save more time unless the computer is hard to get to. I’m curious what your take is on it.

    • @ScannerDanner

      Sure, bit you probably will have a hard time getting enough in there for it to start. There is also a fire hazard any time you are spraying in an external fuel source. Intake backfiring can and will ignite

    Hi,
    I mistakenly put charger terminals other way around and the fuse on charger blown. After that it started and l left parked for a while to do the wheel refurb. Now it doesn’t start. It cranks, sparks are there. Fuel pump checked too, all ok. It cranks and cranks and get the plugs flooded. It is 2006 golf mk5 1.4 tsi GT (170hp). Been to 2 mechanics but they didn’t checked it electronically. According to them the errors came up during scan shouldn’t engine stop from starting. How to start checking this car? How to check 5 v reference, please help. Thanks

    paul, while you guys check short to ground on 5v ref on computer.. one ref has no reading and the other has 9.3 mega ohms while all the connector is all disconnected, isn't that one is a red flag?? because you might still have a connector plug in

  • @DeMacChannel

    Yes I am sure I am pretty smart I'm a fast learner I'm very detail-oriented and for some reason I am straight-up a visual learner give me a manual give me anything with pictures number sequence and snapping my fingers I got it. But you give me something to read only with no pictures or diagrams or you know anything that I could transfer from A to B paper to paper engine to engine then I suck just like doing book reports. But your attention to detail and explanations and RI explanations are perfect

    when you tested short to ground,you mentioned that 9 megaohms doest mean its shoted to ground. i see 0 ohms is ideal and means no short. what value would mean its shorted to ground?

Currently working on a 91 beretta 3.1 mpfi new fuel pump,new fuel pressure regulator,new injectors, I'm not a mechanic just through some parts at an old car will run if fuel is added was getting to much fuel before now not enough, I don't own a scan tool but from this video pretty sure it's the computer or crank sensor got a computer coming 50$ hopefully this is the cure!! Any suggestions would be appreciated

    The first time I was wondering how the ignition coil fires without the pcm...or maybe ignition module didn't need the pcm during cranking....😎

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  Год назад +1

      Correct. On this system the crank sensor signal goes directly to the ICM first, which is why the PCM is not needed for spark control during cranking

    My question is, during the short to ground test.. in my mind I’m wondering if the reference is shorted to a sensor ground supplied by the computer would you still be able to read continuity with the computer unplugged? Obviously in a different scenario of course

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  4 года назад +1

      If the reference is shorted to a sensor ground, this would be a shorted sensor, or a copper to copper short in the harness. Is this your question? You want to know how to find that?

    • @jacobbarth1862
      @jacobbarth1862 4 года назад

      Yeah like if the ref was shorted in the harness somewhere to a seperate sensor ground that the computer supplied and the computer was unplugged and same with all the shared sensors but was shorted to a seperate sensor ground supplied by the computer and if the computer was unplugged I’m wondering if I would miss it

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  4 года назад

      You would not if you measured from the ECM side of the unplugged connector between the 5v ref and the sensor ground circuit. Make sense? I showed this in a video (2 part series on a cobalt with a bad engine computer)
