I grew up in London and learned more from this video than anything we did at school when I was a kid! Excellent video and very interesting. Thank you to all involved!
Today we are in another pandemic, COVID-19. Year 2020. When I was just 11 some six years ago, I contracted a mild case of cholera in a wealthy First World area, namely Pacific Palisades, California. My case lasted for about 5 days. I had the frequent -rice water- stools and had been puking as well (more out the backside). My paediatrician was called and I had been diagnosied with cholera and given some samples he had of WHO ORS (Oral rehydration salts) I made my recover without complication. So yes, as an adolescent, I am a survivor of cholera like in the 21 century.
This isn’t the John Snow I was looking for (no I wasn’t looking for Jon Snow) but I’m glad I came across this video by accident. It is very interesting. Ok, now I resume my search for the other John Snow.
I read a book about cholera and came across a very informative video while doing some research. The video provided a realistic comparison between London then and now, which was helpful. It was interesting to learn that some places that were once affected by the cholera outbreak are now pubs. Now, in 2023, while experiencing COVID-19, I deeply understand why we need to protect the environment and am doing what I can. It's interesting to note that the cholera outbreak in London was also caused b
Very interesting video and well presented, thank you. I walk through that part of Soho most weekends when I meet with friends, I walk from Old Compton Street to catch my bus home from Oxford Circus.
See the RUclips channel Extra History. They did a 4 or 5 part series on John Snow, Cholera & the Broad Street pump. It is some of the best history I've seen on YT.
I had the pleasure and excitement of going to the site of the pump named by John Snow. The whole idea of pattern matching was my area of AI. To realize that John Snow understood the patterns was stunning.
Great video. What always bothered me is that snows south London study which proved the connection with water and cholera not the broad street investigation. In fact there are a lot of weird details with the pump.. The deaths declined prior to the handle removal on the 8th. The only physician who saw the suspected index patient didn’t believe it was cholera. Or the general board of healths house to house inquiry team finding evidence that would explain shows strange finding which can be found in the appendix of the report of scientific inquiry. Such as the hampstead widow had another connection to the area. Her son lived with her but continued to travel to the broad street area every day, meeting with one of his infected coworkers.
In using AI and BIG Data now this kind of thing, I doubt if it will be found.. because these exception data points which really were the clue to finding the root cause, would be cleaned up as outliners... So exceptions have to be carefully studied, thoroughly analyzed before blindly removing them just because it does not fit your theory.. else you will thoroughly miss the forest for trees.
brilliant observation In the midst of chaos, you can think beyond your time! Implementing a study that moved society, it helped the community affected by the cholera epidemic. Every change has its pros and cons. Dealing with something new unknown impacts, non-believers. we survived the COVID 19 pandemic. JOHN SNOW. For over 100 years. He became a great researcher and precursor of epidemiology.
One of the most brilliantly narrated and intense short documentary. Did'nt take a second of my attention span away. Kudos to the HarvardX team.

Hey you do know that it isn't technically Vlad the Impala right? pale. Its Vlad the Impaler, technically. Have a good one.
@@catheadmoon
Well “It” might be Vlad the Impaler but *_I_* am Vlad the Impala.
@@vladtheimpala5532 Much better imo.
Great information. I want to use this video for my undergrad students.
Excellent. May I kindly suggest you drop the music when you talk as it is distracting. Silence is golden. Thank you for your efforts.
Excellent video, not only do I have an interest in epidemiology, but this video took me back to my Oregon Trail days.
I thought that was dysentery on Oregon trail? Not that it matters, you poop yourself to death either way. 😨
J Do both were diseases in Oregon trail
You do of course realize that it's called The Appalacian Trail right? Be safe.
@@1SpicyMeataball No that's what war is about.
Great content. Excellent presentation.
5:07 you’re telling me that water mixed with poo tastes sweet and clean?

Great video
Since you made this video they have taken the granite slab away and have replaced it with a replica of the original pump and concrete stand.
Photo link, please!

Very interesting. I hope you at least had a beer at the JS pub!
the sad part is they just didn't know any better :/
Like at the general election
lol this was how our epidemiology professor introduced us in the first lesson
The two ladies dining behind her listening to this lovely story! lol.
how long did it take for the government to finally believe john snow? like specifically?
although they seemingly listened to him in this epidemic, it wasn't until the mid 1860's that they fully accepted him.
Bet when he said it's this pump ! They said. "You know nothing john snow"
Yessss! High five Extra History buddy!
great video! Coursera UC Davis course on Data visualization got me here !

For me, the music detracted from the video. I had a hard time understanding her because of the music.
Excellent information!! Thanks!!
thanks
Thank God they didn't leave it to Thames Water to sort out: the whole population of London would have been wiped out before they responded.
1:58 dramatic re-enactment of chamber pot runoff
Fascinating!
Locals: John snow you know nothing. Such a great information well done.

So what happened to the vat of cholera underground?
Köszönöm a videót, bevallom sohasem hallottam Jonh Snowról, de igazán érdekes történet.
That was actually episode 2 of The Vikings and not episode 5 where Bjorn makes the boat. Just sayin'.
Why I'm laughing like an idiot when this dude actually saved more lives than his Westeros namesake?
they said the water tasted sweet...
For a moment I thought he was Jon Snow from GoT
You do realize that GoT is fiction, right?
