    Just realized a little correction that’s been pointed out to me - at 9:36 I state that Araragi would never regret his decision to bind himself to Shinobu in Kizu. But in actuality he ends up dwelling on that regret to at least some extent in Zoku. I suppose I shouldn't have phrased it that way - Seems like I accidentally conflated his decision to stand by her and help her find happiness with his choice in Kizu, which are kinda the same and kinda not in a way. Should've made the distinction! However, someone else commented something else to add to the conversation regarding the translation of the word "regret," which I found interesting and wanted to share as well:
    "You may not know this but regret isnt actually the correct translation
    心残り [kokoronokori] 'regrets' has a slightly different connotation than the word "regret" in English. The English definition of "regret" is to feel sad or disappointed over something that could have been done, or more specifically, has been done.
    You can regret eating your last pudding, or regret not eating it when you had the chance, but this doesn't apply to [kokoronokori], the Japanese 1 to 1 equivalent to English word "regret" would be 後悔 [koukai]. This isn't that.
    Kokoronokori is more like "things I wish I could have done." I wish I could have saved Hachikuji, I wish Oikura Sodachi was happy, I wish I could have done more for Nadeko and still be friends, etc. Of course, the mirror world overlaps with the 20% of THEIR "wishes" too. I wish I was shorter, I wish I had the chance to get closer to Araragi before I left town etc. In this sense, they weren't feeling sad, disappointed, or angry that they made those choices or were dealt with those cards, they just "wish," or rather, wonder how it would be like otherwise.
    The biggest difference between the two lies with Senjougahara Hitagi. It's not JUST that Araragi had no "regrets" concerning Hitagi, but that he also had no "wishes." If you love someone, even a normal deal, you wouldn't ever regret meeting or loving them anyways. That feeling's too shallow. If you regret loving someone, that's pretty much saying you HATE them now. No, this isn't what Araragi said. Araragi said he has no Kokoronokori concerning Hitagi, no "I wish I had," "I wish you had," "I wish we had,"s with her, he was completely happy with Senjougahara Hitagi as a person and with their relationship. Concerning this case, the difference in translation matters a whole lot, and if the Monogatari Series taught us anything, it's that words are deep, heavy, and carry a lot of meaning, and untranslatable words or mistranslations could cause a huge loss"
    ^So either way, interesting stuff to consider regarding the specificity of Araragi's feelings towards making the decision when it comes to Koyomi Reverse.

    I got very excited to see this in my sub box. Monogatari seems to be one of those "Fairly popular, but not many willing to talk about it" series, for many reasons. Between the very avant garde presentation, to the niche storytelling style, nonchronological story order, and some... painful content in regards to lolicon humor, it's hard to recommend or talk about. Another thing to consider about Shinobu is her unique character archetype. Anime characters (especially girls in harem shows) generally fall in line with one of the common archetypes. You know the childhood friend type , tsundere type, onee-san type, wild girl type , tomboy type, ojou type, kuudere type or a combination of the two. Shinobu actually encapsulates almost all the known archetypes in one character

  • @Wuffskers

    Something I find interesting is that despite the aggressive horny energy and sexuality present throughout the series, it's almost non-existent in Araragi's and Shinobu's relationship. In many ways they feel like "soul mates" yet their relationship isn't really romantic either, nor is it familial exactly and it's more intense and intimate than friendship. It's such a unique relationship that practically defies classification.

    Shinobu is essentially Araragi's baggage- he's decided that his past self is still an important part of his identity that he can't afford to throw away- that antisocial depressive, borderline suicidal loner formed the crux of his being.
    Araragi is shown throughout the series to be an EXTREMELY nostalgic individual- not allowing Shinobu to die because he can't allow somebody else's life to have less value than his own, bringing Hachikuji back from hell despite it being mandated that she's *supposed* to be there, as well as the entire events of Zoku, of course.
    However, something changed Araragi for the better. If Shinobu allowed Araragi to indulge in depression, Hanekawa showed Araragi that there's more to life than that. But she wasn't ultimately the one to follow through with that- it was Senjogahara.
    After seeing Senjogahara's struggles with her oddity, that's when Araragi feels he's got to confront his past to an extent, and why we have him narrating the events of Kizumonogatari to us directly after Bakemonogatari.
    And by finding love in another, he's able to finally live for today. He goes on to help everyone in town from the issues they suffer after seeing the strength displayed by Senjogahara.
    However, he never pulled the trigger and got rid of his baggage (metaphorically speaking, Shinobu)- his low sense of self-worth remained, and that creates an interesting interplay between his self-worth and his newfound reason to live. How does that manifest itself? Araragi embracing his self sacrificing nature totally.
    But this brings us to my favourite part of Araragi- his relationship with Ougi. I suspect that if Araragi pulled the trigger on Shinobu and moved on with Senjogahara, he may not have manifested Ougi as an oddity- the manifestation of his self loathing. Especially since the presence of Shinobu in the town- a being that many claim is the strongest of all oddities- ends up creating a sort of attractor field for everyone else's issues to manifest as oddities. And Araragi probably knows that he's partly responsible for this, and feels selfish for choosing to live and save people
    Yet even then, he manages to prove himself wrong- accepting all the parts of himself without having to pull the trigger on any of those parts- and I think that in the end, Araragi manages to confront his own demons without running away. Truly, the end of adolescence.

    In all of Araragi's other relationships in the show, he treats everyone as an individual and they do the same to him, even his relationship with Hitagi is this way. They cant imagine being apart, but they know they are still independent beings at the end of the day. Where all of his other relationships are interpersonal, what him and Shinobu share is symbiotic and borders on spiritual. The ending of Kizu shows this in a really meaningful way, especially if youve watched the rest of the series already. Its not that they can't imagine not being together, but that they couldn't even exist without each other. For all the silly and over the top stuff in this show, it really is beautiful and deeply meaningful how it portrays what it means to be human and desire connection to others.

    It’s one the most complicated and beautiful display of a relationship between two individuals I’ve ever witnessed. I consumed many type of books and films with a lot of relationships before but only few of them remain in my mind like the bond between Araragi and Schinobu. Like you already mentioned we can’t comprehend their relationship and can’t compare it with senjo. The only thing we can say is that their bond is beyond any love or other emotions you can find. It’s just not explainable. It’s simply a masterpiece of fictional relationships and it surely would be known in the world of literature if it wasn’t anime related(?).
    Overall they’re eternally bond by destiny and soul and no other relationship comes close to that. They are not lovers, they aren’t family, no they’re something more than you could think of. Like you already said in the video they will be together even if the world would end

    • @xfanatick7972
      @xfanatick7972 Год назад

      Also the entire series is beautiful written. Every important character close to Araragi shaped him. Each of them shaped a layer of his being while each of the girls shaped a different layer of his existence Shinobu became the other half of his core. For me it’s like a cooking receipt. While each of the girl are one of the ingredients to make the dish possible Shinobu is like the receipt to guide the cook through his journey of making the dish.

    An excellent video, thank you very much!
    I try to simplify it for others like this:
    Koyomi can only become fully human again if Kiss-Shot dies. Kiss-shot can only become fully vampire again if Koyomi dies. But while each is willing to die for the other, neither one wants to go on living without the other. So by the wounds, literal and figurative, that they inflict on, and willingly receive from, each other, they continue to live together.
    Hanekawa is Koyomi's best friend.
    Senjougahara is his girlfriend.
    Kiss-Shot/Shinobu is his soulmate.

    With this you got me without any problems, while I indulged in way too much Monogatari media over the years to find much new in a video like this, it is still a topic I won't miss.
    A video like this makes me wonder how someone with little experience in the medium of anime would react to this, the artstyle and dialogue is so unique, to nearly anything else, which makes Monogatari one of the prime examples of what anime is capable of, that it kind of makes me interested in someone completely fresh getting confronted with it.
    The writing of NisioisiN is always outstanding.
    Also, about my comments on Haikyuu, I'm so far behind on the manga and anime, that I rarely engage in content about it anymore. Maybe one day I will catch up and consume more about it again, but not for now, my favorite sports story that dwarved Haikyuu is Baby Steps where I catch up to the manga every few months (I just like reading in batches instead of weekly).

There's smtg so different abt the show compared to others, especially the relationships. The scene of Araragi embraced by Shinobu's true form and their comment on death always empathized they are only complete when with each other and they have more love more then trust in another individual. The completeness of their relationship has always made me feel a comforting melancholy since i have never felt this in any relationship nor in any relationship I've observed in those around me. But because of that... it seems like something we should all wish to obtain, if not grasp in some form for only a moment.

    9:36 you say that Araragi will never grow to regret that decision, but that's exactly his regrets towards Shinobu, binding her to his shadow, so basically what he did in Kizu, is literally the regret he has in Zoku Owari: "...and I
    continued to bind Shinobu to my shadow.
    Year 1, Class 3─and so much more.
    I had a mountain of regrets." And it's not even the only regret related to Shinobu he has.
    The only character he has no regrets of is Senjougahara.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  3 года назад +6

      Whoops, I suppose I shouldn't have phrased it that way. Seems like I accidentally conflated his decision to stand by her and help her find happiness with his choice in Kizu, which are kinda the same and kinda not in a way. Should've made the distinction.

    • @mosesafful4200
      @mosesafful4200 3 года назад +27

      You may not know this but regret isnt actually the correct translation
Concerning this case, the difference in translation matters a whole lot, and if the Monogatari Series taught us anything, it's that words are deep, heavy, and carry a lot of meaning, and untranslatable words or mistranslations could cause a huge loss

    Araragi's relationship with Shinobu is one of the most beautiful stories across any media, and the anime does a fantastic job of showing that - not just telling, but showing the flaws and difficulties and reasons.
    The novels, and specifically the arcs of Princess Fair and Acerola Bon Appétit, go into more details on Kiss-shot's very tragic backstory. Without spoiling anything, his choice to save Kiss-shot in Kizu was the same as him going on to help all the others overcome their own issues, except Kiss-shot had the additional baggage of 500 years as a vampire, which he also helped with.
    Truly a fantastic series and I would highly recommend anyone who loves the series to read the novels as well. The anime does an incredible job of adapting it, but there will always be things that don't translate well, had to be cut, or just haven't yet been animated. You will not be disappointed by the novels.

    honestly senjogouharas relationship is cool and cute but the true relationship I feel was shinobu and araragi. Idk every time they were on screen with one another especially within their deep moments it felt to another level of special. Closed in and personal i must say. Shinobu speaks mainly to araragi and araragi alone for the most part. They problems, difficulties, struggles, and overall values feel very connected throughout the story more than any other. I also kinda seen this with hachikuji in a way on how from the most part of the beginning she's seen really to only consult with araragi. Shinobu is that but on a more deeper personal level. And I feel like the feelings I've felt abt it have been conveyed through this video. Because I honestly agree.
