Oh man, i did NOT know you could just learn vertical/horizontal jump 8 and skip the rest of the bunch. I assumed that whould only let you jump 8 spaces away from your character, but not on an enemy closer to them. I had a Ninja/Thief on my last playthrough of WOFTL, but i think i'm going to try a Thief/Dragoon next time i play. Thanks for all the useful info!
Shame doublehand doesn't work with that though it helps normal attacks as spears can't dual wield. They do get power crept by knight swords, late iaido and high bravery brawler dual wield shout. I also feel at this stage any generic build that benefits a mime is a huge tiebreaker (time mage quick, white mage wall gives a heck of an initiative for the mime to target themselves). Early build there are no chapter 1 spears/katanas, so mid is ideal or finalizing chapter 1 with brawler or equip sword to get stupid black mage to hit regenerating Argath. It's still way better than the dragoon in chocobo's mystery dungeon every buddy (just pay $2 and spam the buddy ninja fuma shuriken that is as OP as ff3) or ff5 though twin Lance was kinda cool. Kain in ff4 is kinda average though ff6 Edgar or mog dragoon build for multiple jumps helps when tools or dance gets power crept. It is nice to revisit this so I can see new vanilla ideas or watch pvp mods to see what gets changed.
@itsgonnabeanaurfromme why insult me on sound ideas? Since my post, I just noticed giving everyone black magic chapter 1 makes the game much easier that it bypasses a low level challenge. You get surrounded and they are faster chapter 2 so it gets dated with gaffgarion.
I will just say that although the polearm bonus for Jump is nice, it cant be understated just how useful haste can be for Jump. Giving Balthier Excalibur and Jump lets him finish off everyone on the battlefield by himself before they can even reach him
Thanks for the insight SK! 👍 Definitely agree about Balthier and hasted Jumping; if I remember correctly he can equip polearms as his Sky Pirate Job, and Brigand's Gloves would give him the haste you're looking for.
Hi Ryan, thanks for posting the intriguing comment. I had to look up Jump skill in the BMG to verify, but it looks like +X Jump movement abilities have no effect on the Jump command. That would have been pretty cool if true! "Jump +X and Ignore Height have NO effect on the JUMP command -- these abilities influence the Jump statistic, which is completely different from the JUMP action ability." - Battle Mechanics Guide sec. 2.3
@@TacticsLive what I was driving at was that Thief offers jump+2 so it makes it easier to horizontal jump without needing the higher levels of vertical jump as you navigate the field. I apologize if I wasn't describing the build clearly. Cheers.

That's correct, it's Septieme, and it grants Haste and Invisibility! 👍 While you don't need the 100% hit rate from Invisible/Abandon, it's certainly nice to have for keeping your Dragoon from being targeted between jumps. The Attack Boost is definitely a great choice since it applies to all skills and abilities, not just your melee attacks like Doublehand does. Hi Guts, great question! Ramza starts off with excellent PA, which will make your Jump hit harder. The trick is to level Ramza up as a Thief long enough to grow your Speed stat to a decent level. I try to get to 10 SP as quickly as possible, either with equipment choices or raw stats, which is difficult as a Dragoon who can't equip clothes and hats which normally give you speed boosts. Ultimately I want a Dragoon with at least 13 SP so I can land in four clock ticks. 👍 With a little bit of prep Ramza makes an excellent Dragoon, and you can utilize Focus or Scream at the start of the fight to further increase your Jump's power.
I remember tearing this game apart upon original release for the PSX. It wasnt what i expected at first, but, grew on me quickly. You should check out FF16 and consider doing informative videos on its combat. Great videos, great job. Now, im interested in these PVP tournaments.

I thought that, too, back then. I hear you only needed +8 and assumed it meant you can only hit that distance and just back away to hit closer spots

I remember I made Ramza a Dragoon in my first playthrough. Jump was an awesome long range tool for someone who was just learning the mechanics.
And the fact he can boost his own speed is really crazy too
Consider that the Thief ability of Jump+2 makes the Dragoon save on 'jump' skill, you might want to talk about 'back-classing'
