  • There are more than a few necessary evils when it comes to raising any livestock animal, but registered goats may take the cake! In this video I'll be demonstrating how to tattoo and disbud goat kids as well as sitting down with our newest Nigerian Dwarf "wether" to have a short chat about castration.

    That disbudding box looks very handy! Thanks for showing the tattooing process, we’ve been meaning to get a punch but just haven’t yet. We haven’t sold any registered goats so it hasn’t been a high priority. And I wish we had a rocky area here on our farm where the goats could trim their own hooves!

      I know. We had laid out a lot of gravel a couple years ago but it's all sunk into the mud now.

      If you set up some boulders ir even some concrete square pavers it might help a little. The place we moved to has a huge metal Quonset Barn that has an apron of concrete that it sits on. The concrete has a ledge that sticks out around the barn. It has become tge goat's playground, racing area, and sun bathing area lol. I've noticed since we moved here, their hooves have been much more worn down and I don't have to trim nearly as much.

    Thick leather gloves when disbudding might be a good idea. You need those hands.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Год назад +5

      This was the first time I didn't use them. I need a different size or something because I can't hold them still and keep hold of that ear with them. I use my beekeeping gloves.

    Thank you for showing the figure '8' dehorning. I've been reading about it but have never seen it done. Scurs can be a huge pain for the goat AND you! I've watched Maaika grab scurs & snap them off with a quick twist. It will usually work on a YOUNG goat if the scur isn't large. The buck I'm using right now had 1 1/2"-2" scurs. I grabbed them with a pliers (I can't get a tight enough grip just with my hands; arthritis) & they came off easily when he tossed his head & backed away from me. Very slight bleed & so far they haven't come back. Dehorning isn't fun, but oh so worth it!! God bless!

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Год назад +3

      I popped his scurs off like that when he was little and they were wiggly! They grew back! Maybe I'll try the pliers thing. At least the one is wiggly.

      @@SageandStoneHomestead there's a good chance Dude's scurs will regrow too, they just haven't as of yet. Scurs are such a "wild card", very unpredictable in size & especially in direction!!

      @@SageandStoneHomesteadI can't vouch for validity, but a friend of mine claims they bought a buck with real bad scurs and when they removed them (can't remember if it was surgically?) he ended up with an infection that managed to reach his brain and kill him! Pretty wild.

    Thank you for such an informative video! You handle the babies well, and make it look so easy...lots of practice, I'm sure. It breaks my heart to hear them scream, but I know it has to be done. Our wether has developed scurs (sp?). It looks as if it's just starting to curl back toward his head. I didn't know the tips could be trimmed (without a vet) so will go out today, and do that...while it's still thin. Did you make your disbudding box? If so, did you put out a video about it?

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Год назад +4

      We bought our box from Caprine Supply but they easily could be made!! The chin rests are on the Caprine Supply website by themselves. Yes you can trim scurs!! Sometimes they bleed a tiny bit but often they don't. Hamish's are thick and hard though so I need to get out the wire saw.

    Loved the video! I have a couple of questions about your equipment - is there a certain size/brand of tattoo pliers that you use and what size/brand of disbudding iron do you use? I’ve raised goats for years but recently got into registered goats to keep up with quality of milking genetic so my next kidding crop I’m going to have to deal with all of disbudding and tattooing myself.
    *edit to add, did you buy or build your disbudding box?

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Год назад +3

      I got everything I have from Caprine Supply online. They are based out of Kansas! I have two disbudding irons, one has a pygmy tip but I haven't used that one at all. Our vet uses a .55 inch tip for kids so that's what I have used. My dehorner is the Rinehart x-30.
      The tattoo pliers and letters come in different sizes too. Let me double check on the ones I have!
