Obviously (if you’re not a psychopath) you know instinctually to be careful and want to keep them safe but there’s very little interaction in that meeting. Unless you’re actively the primary caregiver be it the parent or even just taking over to give mom and dad a break there’s very little to do but observe.

Probably a lot of the aversion some people have towards babies stems from how we live in smaller-than-traditional units... there's not enough of a "team" around the baby to support all the urgent needs it can't possibly verbalize, so we get more of the wailing and the sleepless parents than there should be. Frankly babies probably shouldn't be taken on shopping trips or plane rides either, but remain comfortably at home with a caretaker... this would also cut down on public irritation. I've come around to see the "extended family" habitation pattern as the only correct option, but sadly everything in society, economy, and real estate is geared against it, probably to sell more units.

@@MrCantStopTheRobot this is such an underrated take. The western-style nuclear family has some benefits in freedom and individuality for the children but I have to admit the eastern big family method works better for the parents and the older generation.

Babies should probably spend a little longer in the meat coccoon, so they're closer to walking after birth like most mammals... but our bipedal structure makes hips a limiting factor. Also why wide hips are probably furthest on the "primal" end of attractive female traits. Heroin-chic is an enormously late shift, like evolutionary hipsterism.

As a fairly new uncle, I had a similar reaction to Kronii. I wasn't there for the birth, but seeing the baby later, I was like "what do I do with this other than hold it and make faces?" My instincts kept telling me to talk to it like a dog, say, like "good boy" and pat his head since I can talk to him but he can't respond with words, but that feels stupid, especially when my sister is talking to him a lot more naturally. And it makes sense to talk to it like a normal person, since that is how they learn to talk.

I'm on board with her sentiment here. Fresh newborns are _weird_ little things. Lovable, but weird, like little beetle grubs you can become attached to.
My main problem was the fear of holding said newborn. It's scary when you don't know how much or little force to apply... in basically every touch.

Popping out a living, active version of yourself that was alive while also being induced another living, active version of yourself really is a truly a wild thing
I think most people forget that seeing it is very different from passively knowing that the process exists. The miracle of childbirth is an amazing thing, and this person who already struggles has to describe a whole shift in view from that miracle
"Fresh baby" does make it sound like the baby was born already wearing fashionable clothing, though
