I'll stick with SRV but I have yet to hear the GREAT Jeff Beck playing it. I have been binging on Jeff since he died and I have gotten to that one yet. Love the way Jeff mentored Tal Wilkenfeld and the interaction with in her breakout concert 2007 Crossroads.
Srv BUTCHERED little wing, it's supposed to be gentle, SRV just ham fisted it with overused tired blues licks, and here, double trouble didn't even try to play the correct drum or bass parts. Go check out hendrix playing voodoo child at Woodstock.
Prepare to be absolutely blown away SRV. He was an absolute genius with the guitar and those words are not nearly adequate to do him proper homage. Taken from us far, far too early. He should be talked about and celebrated far more than he is. RIP SRV. You are still sorely missed 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan play at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin the night before he died in a helicopter crash (1990). He was touring with Eric Clapton, and it was one of the best experiences ever! Stevie Ray thrilled the crowd to no end. When Clapton took the stage afterwards, it was just a bonus! It still hurts to think of that horrible, very preventable tragedy.
We were there too a lot of tears shed driving all the way back to Ohio . We were also thankful the rest of a great bill including Robert Cray and headliner Eric Clapton (with guests Buddy Guy ,Hubert Sumlin ) closing out the show doing "Sweet Home Chicago" survived the tragedy
@@EarlRice-g2u ..... You must have seen the Sunday night show. I was there on Saturday night. Jeff Healy came out during Clapton's encore and played Crossroads with him. It was amazing!
Stevie's version of Tin Pan Alley is so good that I am sure the creator was one of the first to greet Stevie in heaven and congratulate him on improving it from its original. The best version of this is the live rendition featuring another Texas Blues guitarist as it showcases Stevie's vocals a bit more. His Lenny song is another amazing track as it is undeniable how much passion and love he put into not just writing that song but performing it as well. Everything about a man who has traveled the wrong path... was able to correct himself to live a better life and be rewarded by sharing his good fortune with the love of his life is wrapped up in that one track.
“I love the bassist. He’s just looking.” Well, actually, he’s watching for a cue from Stevie letting him know it is time to continue to the next section of the song. Stevie would improvise a lot when he was playing. Sometimes a quick solo section would go for eight bars, and other times he would continue for 16 or 24 bars. It depended how he felt in the moment and how he liked what he had currently come up with. A lot of the time solos are kind of mapped out and he would play something similar every time they played a song or section of a song, and other times he would improvise more and change a lot of what he played. The band members developed some nonverbal communication skills to let the rest of the band know when they were going to complete their solo section and move on to the next section, or pass the solo over to the other guy. After Reese joined the band on keyboards and piano you will see his cues are very, very obvious. He, too, would take silos of varying lengths depending on his mood and feel, etc,, and when he was ready to pass it back to Stevie you will see him raise his arm for the last bar or two in order to indicate he’s about to finish up and give it back to Stevie. Lots of bands that do stuff like that will have their own shorthand methods of letting each other know when it is time to progress. So in this case, Tommy is aware of how long the section might be, and also how long to extend it for if it goes past that, and thus when to start watching for a cue. They won’t come randomly. They all know that it’ll be multiples of the same number of bars in order to make things sound “proper.” The second time they did the TV show Austin City Limits is with Reese, and you can see them giving each other cues many times throughout the show.
It's amazing how precise and clean Stevie's playing was despite the fact he used such heavy gauge strings. He primarily played with .13 gauge strings. His hands were incredibly strong and he could manipulate and bend those strings almost effortlessly. The guy wasn't human.
Stevie bent those strings like they were nothing yet he actually used the thickest strings available and somehow still broke them, enormously strong hands
I have enjoyed your reactions to my all time favorite Stevie Ray Vaughan. Taken to soon & so very missed. You definitely showed an appreciation of his amazing talent & mad skills. You may also want to know he was a kind, humble & generous soul as well.
Your observations Bisscute about Stevie pouring his soul into his playing were dead on. There's a song that he did with his brother Jimmy called Hard to Be and in the very beginning you hear Stevie saying, "Roll (the tape) and I'll just FEEL something" which is exactly why you noticed the bassist Tommy Shannon always looking at him because Stevie was always playing whatever he felt for another who-knows-how-many bars so Tommy would looking to Stevie for his queue to move on to the next stage of the song. To me, that last part of the feedback when he's bending the strings was like he was making love to it, like, I've got you baby, feel me!
The guitar tricks he does in the song Texas Flood are amazing. He was a legend taken way too soon, 34 years old when he died in a helicopter crash. Rest in Peace SRV.
just weeks before he turned 36 and 4 years sober... and made a beautiful speech at Capitol Theater in 1985 his song LIFE WITHOUT YOU. Beat performance EVER!! RIP💔SRV🎸
@rickjohnsoh please. Leave it. Even this souless math rock thing and your polyphia thing is meh. Its all just dry technique. It doesnt have the musicality of this. Its not even in the same conversation.
@@Darrenski Absolutely...Music is about feeling not just who has faster fingers or whatever...SRV had the whole package....great showmanship as well...
Stevie was a freaking wizard. To think he hammered and bent these notes with 12 gage strings. I invite you to try that gage on your guitar and see how long it takes for your finger tips to bleed. Just incredible.
Stevie was an absolutely open channel, if you can check out the whole concert Montreux 1985…but they’ve made a cut of Tin Pan Alley w/guest Johnny Copeland and you can see SRV’s hands moving when he’s gripping the strings *to not play* and they move as he sings. Also he stuns JC with an incredible moment after which he actually has to recover.
The 4 greatest live guitar session songs are, this song, Stevie does Texas Flood, live at El Mocambo, Eddie Van Halen live concert Eruption - 1986, and Tommy Emanuel live version Classical Gas, acoustic guitar, on stage with another guitar player....who is just sitting in awe! Those 4 songs live, you'll never need to hear another!

When the masters of guitar get together, the all bow down to SRV. The Devil first went to Georgia to steal a soul, then he went to Texas to learn to play guitar. RIP SRV
I love your constant smile as Stevie takes you to a place of awe. He stands on the MT Rushmore of all time greatest guitarists along with JImi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. The fourth member is debatable. Please check out Stevie playing Texas Flood live at El Mocambo or a super change of pace with Riviera Paradise. You will see playing and showmanship that is second to none. ❤🤘
I saw Hendrix at the University of Alabama in the spring of 1969. Was a big fan, still am all these many years later. SRV, such a master of this cover, an amazing rendition. Jimi would be proud of him. Who does it better? Good heavens, who can say! Love them both!! I wager it is still debated in "Music Heaven" where they both are now. Bliss and blessings to them for enriching us all!
When I was a kid, Stevie Ray Vaughn was all over our state…were from Texas…he was considered a musical icon…they would play him on the radio a lot…he did shows here and kids would talk about them the next day in school. They called him..”Texas favorite son.”
Dayum Bis! You’re officially my favorite reactor for your reaction to this song alone! You got this from beginning to end and it’s just so great to hear your insights!
I feel bad for saying this, but my all time favorite SRV song is another Hendrix song he covered called Little Wing. It's not to say his original songs are bad, but he took an already beautiful song, rewrote it as an instrumental, and made it one of the best instrumentals I have ever heard. Another great blues guitarist to check out is Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Had a big hit with Blue on Black (you can really hear a lot of SRV influence), and most people would suggest it. I would say Aberdeen or Was by him are also awesome.
You have what it takes. Become one with your guitar. Eat with it, sleep with it, push yourself hard. SRV used heavy strings and high action. Always be a good person and never seek fame, just do what you love with all your heaart and soul. You will share his spark with others. Godspeed.
SRV Voodoo Child !!!! This version is from Austin City Limits. We had the Tape. Watched it many times then we finally noticed that Stevie started playing "Look At Little Sister" with one guitar and finished with another. He broke a string and the switch was so smooth that we didn't even notice.
Chris "Whipper" Layton on drums and Tommy Shannon (ex-Johnny Winter) on bass comprised "Double Trouble," making them + SRV one of the top-10 best ever 3-man RnR groups. In 1985, a keyboardist, Reese Wynans was brought on-board; another quantum level of sound and energy was thus added to this band!
I got to see that guitar. The original Stevie had several but that old girl was his steady date on stage. I stood by his statue along the river in Austin. One of the best ever. Truly.
Exactly right. Both versions are great. The first SRV song I heard was “Cold Shot”. There was an old PBS show called “Color Sounds” that would show videos with the lyrics on screen. Different parts would be highlighted; nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Cold Shot is the one I remember the most.
The dude is the 🐐 goat! He took this song and made his own. Hendrix would even agree. And what really makes SRV so special is he used the thickest gauge strings and bent them like chicken wire. It gave him holes in his fingers tips he'd fill with super glue just so he could play the next show without much bleeding. Loved the pain, though. Those stink faces he made? 50/50 pain and pleasure. SRV didn't just play with passion. He played like he trying to strangle and lovingly caress that guitar at the same time, making it scream for more! 😍
SRV was taken from us far too soon! He performed at Alpine Valley Music Theater and it was foggy that morning. Eric Clapton was supposed to be on that helicopter but he gave it to SRV who had another gig to go to. So sad it happened in my state. Hendrix did the original version, SRV was just soooo gifted! He played with so much heart and soul! You should also watch SRV - Little Wing
Most people don’t about SRV’s contributions to human biology and neuroscience. Researchers have proven it’s impossible to listen to Stevie’s guitar without making a stank face.
One of my all-time favorite guitar players! Thanks for listening to this! Great three man band! Please listen to his song Rivera Paradise! It'll blow you away! 😊
The guitar he is playing in this video was a gift from his wife in 1980 for his birthday. It sold at auction, after his death, for $623,500. One of the top ten highest priced sales to date for guitars.
