The Montreal Metro with its 4 lines and 68 stations still stands as one of the best metro systems in North America - and one of the most unique with its rubber tires. Enjoy this montage of the system from my recent visit in 2023!

=ABOUT ME=
Ever wondered why your city's transit just doesn't seem quite up to snuff? RMTransit is here to answer that, and help you open your eyes to all of the different public transportation systems around the world!
Reece (the RM in RMTransit) is an urbanist and public transport critic residing in Toronto, Canada, with the goal of helping the world become more connected through metros, trams, buses, high-speed trains, and all other transport modes.
Moving to this city in 2021 and now living here for 2 years. It’s forever changed how I view the world and what kind of world I want to live in. Forever motivated to demand better and better public transit, urbanism, and a public spaces. Thank you Montréal. 💙
It makes up for the high taxes, language politics, and roads seemingly paved by Hades (actually, by the mafia).
Hey, rent's still cheap compared to TO and Vancouver. And you won't get bagels and smoked meat anywhere else as good.
From the rubber tires to the fact that the trains can’t get wet, I do love Montréal’s system and all its little quirks
Can't get wet ? You certainly missed the last week episode with the green line closed because of water infiltration from cracked cement !
@@Asakha1 very minor amounts of water!
It’s a beautiful system, the architecture too!
So, what would happen if I threw a bucket of water on a train?
Is there a force field that prevents the water from making contact with the train?
"trains cant get wet" That is unless you go in the blue line. there's always water leakage there
you rarely see a subway system that is that connected with it's city's identity and culture. it's about as important to Montreal as the subway is to new York or the tube is london, and it's honestly really cool!
In Toronto, historically the streetcar system is connected with its identity. However, more people in Toronto ride the subway than the streetcars. Perhaps in 20 years when the various subway expansions in Toronto are completed, the subway will have more of a cultural presence.
@@Nunavuter1 i hope so because it's getting really damn cool!

Damn I thought it'd be a transit explained video 😅😭
Those usually don't come out as a bonus video on a Thursday, but stay tuned for a new one very soon...
once the rem opens i hope he'll make one about the greater Montreal region!
I was on the Métro the second day of its existence, back in 1966. I had just turned 10, and to me, this was the coolest thing ever. It's still pretty cool. 😉
I wish the Montreal Metro would expand beyond just the Blue Line extension to Anjou. I understand that the REM is essentially another Metro line, but I think projects such as the Pink Line (which would do a great job at connecting two ends of Montreal) as well as the canceled White Line (which could be warranted if the Pie-IX BRT is at full capacity) would be great for the system.
Would be cool to have an airport extension of the blue line, like it was originally planned!
Although the Green line already tends to be very full at rush hour, as someone who used to live in the affected area, I've always though it should extend west into Lachine. Now it stops just short of LaSalle (though lots of bus lines in LaSalle connect to it), but I can easily see 5 stations going in there, about ~1 stop per km. It can perhaps go all the way to Dorval station & connect with the XO and REM there.
It would be much cheaper to extend the airport branch of the REM the other way to Angrignon though. There are some surface rights of way (power lines, and old freight line, along the canal - though that's an inconvenient one - not many people live around there) that can be used.
The White line would be good, though with costs, I would only expect maybe the BRT converted to a tram if it fills up, or one added on a parallel road.
It would be good to have a train station there too, combined with higher frequency. It would allow less stops to get down town. The metro is then better for getting even closer to a precise destination.
North America forgot how to build subways like 60 years ago unfortunately
Montreal should be pushing projects like that forward, but it will be impossible if the city doesn’t get its costs under control
I love the 3 separate tones the electric motors make on the old trains. It's such an interesting and unique subway system.
It truly is a Great Metro
What's even more interesting is that these tones upon departure are the same tones used in the metro jingle.
Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man
F# - B - F#
Fun fact, it's actually 5 tones, it's just the first note is too low to be heard and the second one is barely audible (though you can hear it if you pay attention)
I love the Metro so much. Such a brilliantly designed and highly functional system for getting around the city.
Your Metro really has it all. What you have in Montreal is not available elsewhere in the U.S. WMATA and BART come close but being hybrid metro-regional rail their frequency is crap. Boston MBTA is still trying to figure out how Montreal's subway system moves so many people so fast. Every station having its own architectural design is a blessing, and your trains are engineered for looks, reliability and pure performance.
I’m visiting Canada in July and Montreal is the one i’m most excited for! It just looks amazing, and I love how accessible the city is transport-wise
This video made me miss Montréal so much and especially the Métro. The few years I lived there saw my life made that much better because of its transit service.
If I could have my wish for the system, I would love to see the Blue and Green lines extended to interchange somewhere in LaSalle or maybe Lachine in the southwest, and perhaps beyond Anjou to meet closer to Pointe-aux-Trembles.
I would also love to see the Yellow line extended further in Longueuil and perhaps into Boucherville. It would also be cool to have the Orange line extended beyond Côte-Vertu into Laval to join with Montmorency to form a full circle line.
The REM is a great addition and I hope is integrated seamlessly with the Métro. One thing I would love to see is the Exo commuter service be upgraded to a proper Réseau Express Régionale (RER) to ensure better connectivity for the whole region. It’s a pity that the Mascouche line will no longer see direct service into the city thanks to the REM but it would be great if it could be rerouted and brought into the downtown area again. While I’m on a roll, if they could somehow revive some of the old grand stations like Gare Windsor and even Gare Viger, that would be a dream come true for me.
Of course I would be happy if the STM could start by restoring services they’ve reduced, including on the bus lines as well as revive and expand the Réseau Dix Minute max services
I just got back from a 4 day trip in Montreal and riding/seeing the metro is the one thing I didn't do - so thank you for satisfying my need to see metros.
I'm very thirsty for some good news about Montreal Transit :( this video is very nice though loved it !!
It’s being massively expanded! Sounds like good news to me!
@@RMTransit it is to me too, I just can't wait for more videos and updates about it that's what I meant :D ❤️
I love your videos about Montreal they gave me hope that things are getting better
I was a Montréal resident for over three years and I rarely drove a vehicle, despite being a daily commuter. The transit system is definitely advanced for North America's standards. There's always room for improvement, but I think the REM, once it's fully operational, will likely bring Montreal to the top spot in Canada for transit. One thing I will say though is that I feel more could be done to keep the metro safe. I can remember a few high-traffic stations being sketchy, and not only at night. This has little to do with STM itself, of course, it is an issue that all the local institutions should tackle together.
Ah Toronto definitely has a better trajectory, Montreal has to do more!
Hopefully the Blue Line extension works well, Orange Line to Bois Franc to connect to the REM station, Yellow Line more in Longueuil or maybe westward to McGill as well. Loving the new stuff for the Metro, crazy to think the recent extension to the metro was decades ago, it’s been long but we need to get it done!
Was 2007 really that long ago?
*sees how 2007 was 16 years ago*
Jesus I'm getting old
I've only been to Montreal once, in the summer of 2015. I remember being quite impressed with the metro, as well as the bus and tram service on the surface. Would like to get back again soon for another visit.
There is no tram in Montreal though, unfortunately XD
@Alex Seguin hmm... Perhaps I'm remembering some sort of tourist open bus?🤔 I could be entirely mistaken, it's been almost 8 years since I visited.
I went to Montreal recently and was blown away by the metro. I am coming from NYC, so I thought I had the best North American metro at home. Now I am second guessing myself!
If I were in charge of building the perfect subway system, I'd take virtually all of the design elements from the Montreal metro (except I'd have wider and air-conditioned trains). Montreal is a really terrific system, and if you know its history, it's also an amazing engineering feat (e.g. first digging began in 1962 and the bulk of the initial system was opened in 1966). Great music, by the way!
People who grew up in Toronto in the 80s and early 90s will remember "Night Walk" and "Night Moves" on CityTV (Channel 57) late at night. This unusual post from RM Transit reminded me of the scenes from those old TV segments accompanied by smooth jazz music. As much as there is so much transit expansion underway in Toronto, I can tell you that Montreal has done a better job of maintaining its existing system in a better state. Politicians in Toronto seem to love to cut ribbons on new things, while neglecting the stuff that already exists.
Those videos exist on RUclips, with varying picture quality. Those filler pieces turned out to be especially popular with prisoners, as "It makes me feel I'm outside again."
Very calming and chill video , need some 24/7 train streaming channel on yt
That’s the goal 🎉
You should talk about the workers in public transit: the operators, the maintenance crew, and even the sanitation workers. It helps to show the importance how transit are operated.
Are you going to be there on opening day for the REM, Reece?!
I’d like to try! No promises though
J’❤ Montréal.
It’s a lovely city!
Kind of stunning that it has expanded so little after such a great start.
us canadians really don't like transit enough to have made it possible. even toronto didn't really start to expand its subway until the 2000s. with such high population growth and immigration numbers being very high, i think we'll see cities expanding infrastructure - i hope
Going on a school trip to Montreal in a month, can’t wait!
Awesome video!! Keep up the great work 🙏👍🏼
Reece I'm shocked - did I see no video at all from Namur??
In all honesty, I haven't been to MTL in a couple of years now, and it's great to see this system in action even if online. Thank you for posting 😊
I sat for a good 3 minutes before realizing you hadn't spoken yet; mesmerized by a subway system. What has my life come to?
Lionel-Groulx really looks like an MTR interchange station in Hong Kong.
It’s big!
What a wonderful video. Always appreciate your cogent policy thoughts, Reece, but sometimes it's nice to just sit back and enjoy just watching trains, stations, and people using them. Bravo Montreal and thank you RM for this nice homage.
Another nice video dude.
Weirdly relaxing
the sounds of transit with nice music, perfect for making a metro map in metrodreamin (i reccomend it, its fun)
I still find it very strange that these train don’t have AC.. they’re very modern, and very nice, and a lot of the infrastructure is really next level, but still no ac
The whole system is sealed, which is their excuse
Really? I thought it felt with the new trains when it’s running the air from the outside get pushed inside the car
@@TheRandCrews yeah but that’s just greasy air, it’s not Air conditioned air. Idk if the stations have AC in use over the summer or not, so it might not be a super big deal since it’s also 100% underground
The stations don't have AC. The problem with adding AC to the cars would mean the hot air from the units would be pushed outside into the tunnels/stations making it dangerously hot in the summer
Fantastic video.
This is not a video.
This is a love letter.
The thing about the STM subway is that every station has a story and a design origin. I hope they keep with tradition on the Blue Line expansion.
I love the music sinks and this video is insane just how you catch the greatest views
I thought it would be when your usual videos explaining what's going on in the Montreal Metro system but it turns out to be a pretty cool music video. Gotta give that a thumbs up!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Haha, I recognized all the metro stations shown in this one. I can even tell when it was filmed based on the giant iPhone ad at Lionel-Groulx. Also, nice to see some appreciation for lesser known stations like Préfontaine!
All I care about is if it still makese the chimes when it leaves the station. And it does, so i'm happy. :-)
You were saying that you enjoy the chime on the Montreal subway. Those three notes immediately bring fanfare for the common man by Aaron Copeland to mind! The very first three notes of it.
As a Montrealer who practically rides this almost daily most of the year, you always forget how beautiful the metro is, and the fact that at rush hour you still get 150m long trains (except for the blue line) every 3 minutes is kind of amazing
Though I have to say it seems like it's been getting more and more unreliable lately. It gets far more interruptions and slow downs while I'm there than a few years ago, particularly in regards to things being where they're not supposed to be (objects on track, intruders in tunnels). Let's say I'd be a big fan if they could find a way to install platform screen doors on the network
so good
I love these quiet videos, sometimes you need a bit of a change, and the music helps, I'd be a liar, if I said I don't fall asleep to these videos :)
YES😍
okay so now we need tthese ransit chillwave videos/playlist for all coffee shops and bars to play
I do notice that the different rolling stock models for the Montreal Metro have different number of doors per car
Wondering if it can be possible to install a customized Platform Screen Gates system for passenger safety but also customizable to different door layouts for Montreal Metro's different rolling stock models...
Some places in Japan have platform screen doors like that I think
Or just wait to have uniform rolling stock to install the screen doors. If you are in a hurry, there is a model that resembles a foldable curtain that opens vertically, works with every rolling stock, problem, it's very fragile and quite ugly.
Im not 100% sure but i think the new REM will have platform screen doors
You can but the Orange Line is all Azur so I think we can just focus efforts there for now
Yeah, search "platform screen barriers Japan". Korea has a few stations with them too
I do wish that the front of the new trains were blue. They look weird in comparison to the rest of the train.
Really cool footage! I hop you do the same for Quebec City in 2030 ;)
hi, can you please make a video about public transport in Prague? i think it could be interesting
Although I am dating myself, I recall a visit to Montreal for Expo 67 and riding the new Metro trains with their quiet rubber wheels.
Montreal metro is quite good in terms of ridership and service frequency, but the intercity rail leaves a lot to be desired. HSL 1 Connecting to Toronto, Ottawa, and Quebec City, HSL2 to NYC, and HSL 3 to Boston would be desirable, but is it financially viable ? Don't want to speak for the Canadian taxpayer here but it would be more reliable than flying or driving.
The cross-border trains would have to be extra fast to make up for border+customs wait times. The slowest section in Vancouver Seattle is the between Vancouver station and the border, in addition to making passengers arrive an hour before departure
@@hobog Canada and US should join forces to make cross border crossing on train similar to crossing country lines within the EU.
Form and Function working together. Great Wayfinding Design thanks to Francis Brisebois and his team.
Absolutely, one of the most beautiful systems in the world! With beautiful wayfinding too!
@@RMTransit am looking forward to seeing what Francis and his team design for the ARTM wayfinding.
I honestly preferred NYC’s subway a bit more, because the trains were a bit quieter and smoother, as well as the general atmosphere in NYC. The Montreal subway’s wider platform and better crowd management as well as easier transit system makes it great as well.
Wow. A timosha21-style video. Who'd have thought?
What lines of the Metro do the MR-73's still run on?
All of them , but most common on blue, yellow and green. Generally the orange line is prioritized for AZUR cars so less likely to see a MR-73 on the orange line but still possible
@@TheNmecodthere are no more MR-73’s on the orange line lol. They only run on blue and yellow lines fully and on the green line mostly at rush hour
@@Mrtoz-ct3yn i think since some of the azur stock is under emergency maintenance they're going to roll out some of the old stock on the orange line since they kept a bunch for those exact kind of situations
I watched for 2:30 before I realised it wasn't just a long intro and that you wouldn't start talking lol.
Yeah, maybe once every six months or a year I post something like this when I go on a trip! Just a relaxing reel
Pls do a video on buenos aires suite
Please make a video on transit in South Korea, and how the rest of the worlds transit can learn from it
Beautiful train stock
Possibly the nicest looking transit system in the world
Architecturally, yes
it is super beautiful 👌🏼
With all those huge stations and the trains looking super nice, it definitely is one of the best looking transit systems!
It’s beautiful indeed!
Definitely up there!
You should also revisit other metro systems that you posted a video about 2-4 years ago!
Another tripendicular video from Reese!
The question now is, do I have cheese or meat ravioli for lunch?
Please make a videon on Cleveland's RTA, I heard they got funds to replace all trains with new trains.
My favorite subway system of all. Some good video shots. But a bit of verbal narration to include brief system history and upgrades would have added a lot to it. And denoting the station ID(s), if only visually. Aside from that, a 50th anniversary 'Expo17' world's fair reprise would have been great.
There was something very pleasing about the sequence starting around 5'33, but it would have been nice to see the second train leave.
Vancouver: getting an Expo extension to Langley & Millenium extension eventually to UBC
Calgary: Green Line
Edmonton: extensions to all three lines, Capital Line eventually to YEG
Toronto: Line 1 extension to Richmond Hill, Line 2 extension to Scarborough and Mississauga, potential Line 4 extension to Scarborough, Line 5 extension to Renforth then Pearson Airport, potential Line 6 extension to Pearson Airport & Finch @ Yonge, Ontario Line
Ottawa: Confederation Line extensions on both ends, re-opening of Trillium Line + Airport link
Montreal: Blue Line + REM extensions
Overall, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver do not suck (includes rapid transit, light rail, commuter rail, bus rapid transit, semi-metro)
transit ASMR is exactly what I needed today. how did you know??
I have a special ability😂
How is the safety on this system compared to like Chicago or New York?
There are notable features other than the legacy MR-73 and modern Azur trains with starship-like interiors, long high-capacity nine-car trains, each station with unique architecture, and a relatively clean system: Montreal's Metro is frequent and unusually fast. Everything from short station dwell times, rapid train acceleration to the 45 mph top track speed everywhere and an efficient traffic control offers a unique system that just screams of speed, capacity, optimized performance and rivers of people flowing under the city. CBTC has yet to come!
Ayy my city
I think i saw you on Atwater
Looks like they went from internal sliding doors on the old trains to something more like plug doors. I wish the MTA would look into this instead of shrinking the side windows for bigger doors on the new trains.
They are not plug doors. Still sliding doors, but on the outside and wider (3 per carriage instead of 4 in the older models)
They are external sliding doors! Still on rails!
Splendid! Canada's most beautiful metro.
I'm from MTL !!
I wish Detroit head subway trains like this.
Are you in Montreal for any REM-related reasons by chance?
I wish they would extend the blue line to NDG.
Make video on underwater metro.
The only thing problematic with montreal transit is the prices imo. Although maybe I'm just spoiled and it's even worse everywhere else, but as someone who is not a daily user, A bus ticket from the north shore and a metro ticket, and then again for my ride back, is probably at least half the cost of going out with friends, assuming we only go to one destination and I get 1-3 drinks
I will say though that prices were entirely reasonable for daily users last time I was on the monthly pass.
Multi-zone tickets should now allow you to take the bus, train and metro from the north shore to downtown on a single fare.
Métro de Montréal is the best in Canada. 👌💙
What’s your favourite station? For me it’s got to be Lionel-Groulx.
Dou dou dou
5:15 I won't make any friends saying this: but my god that's dystopian.
That's one of the nicest stations in the network. In what way is it dystopian? I agree with it for some other sketchier stations though.
@@Henri.Virallinen It's all right angles and vast, almost inhuman in scale. The raw concrete is barren and sterile, no visible artwork and there doesn't appear to be anywhere to sit (but the benches might just be out of frame?) There's something of a Soviet milieu to the place, utilitarian, functional. The advertisements aggressively dominate the space and blandness means there's nothing else to stare at. That's just my 2 cents.
It was built during the brutalist 70s trend so yeah it's all concrete. There's benches and a coffee shop and it's very open so it isn't all that bad. Sure there's ads but that helps pay for the transit. There used to be a projection TV on the ad space that used to show a news channel as well as updates on the metro but I think the small screens on the platforms do that now. As far as art on the walls- that's nice but ultimately wasted because everyone's nose is buried in their smartphones these days. It's a wonder that anyone notices their surroundings anymore
6:20 The window glass area makes Toronto cars look like armoured trucks. But all for naught as there are no outdoor views in Montreal Metro.
As much as the Montréal Metro is majestic I'm sure, when will the REM finally open?
I suspect either June or July, at least for the South Shore line. They're doing final testing right now. Rest of the system bar the airport is end of 2024. The bottleneck is the Mont Royal tunnel, which ended up being more trouble than expected.
Tabarouette, I can't believe my dad used to commute to his job downtown from TMR in a tunnel that had ripening explosives tucked away from the early 20th century!
They said on a Friday at the end of spring, which is the 21st of June. So it should be June 16th, although they did not specifically said so. I'm shooting for the 23rd of June, the Eve of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, as date for the South section (Brossard to Central Station).
1:11 Im gonna guess that was the green line dying
System looks nice, and looks like it has nice service -- too bad they didn't choose a sensible rail technology for building it . . . .
Very similar to Paris
Umm...why is it only music and video - no reece...
Montréal was the first metro system I used regularly, when I lived there in 2015, and probably still the one I used the most. I liked how well it worked (at the time the reliability was excellent, despite the average age of the trains being over 40 years !) and the design of the stations (not all of them, but most). I regret that it didn"t take enough time to appreciate the architecture and design of all stations though.
One bad thing was the overcrowding (in the morning rush I sometimes had to wait 2 or 3 trains to board the green line just before downtown)... and also the unbearable heat on green line in the summer. I changed my route to use more orange line and less green for that reason...
Montreal metro is nice and beautiful for a North American city, but it is becoming more and more unreliable. There is always a stupid problem that interrumpts one full line for hours or even the whole metro system. It happens very frequently. I think it may be due to poor maintenance, but this is just a personal impression. It's too sad it is like this. They should learn from other European cities and give higher maintenance even if that implies closing sections of the lines every now and then. It is simply necessary. I lived in Madrid and the metro is way better than here. It has got so bad, I've been biking more and more (which is good) when the weather allows it to avoid using the metro. But in winter, I have no choice and it is desperating.
Video so good, music so lame.
First
Makes Boston's metro look pretty pathetic.
Rubber tires on a train?!?! That's blasphemy!!!
What's the point of this video?
To enjoy the Metro!
What do Canadians think of French-speaking Canadians? As a Brit, I find it kind of bizarre why you would choose to speak a different language to your neighbours and the vast majority of visitors. I understand most speak English too, so why not just drop the French?
Hahaha! The British speak a different language to their neighbours on the continent. Why don't they just drop the English, and speak one of those instead? It's like that.
It's all about history, bud. The first european settlers in Canada were the French back in the early 17th century. Blended in with the Native-Americans, and 150 years later, in 1763, the British invaded and conquered New France. French culture was maintained thanks to the American Revolution and had to accommodate it so it doesn't spill out in Canada. Despite it all, the french language and culture are still pretty strong in Quebec and are putting measures to reassure its survival.
Also, why would it be weird for another territory to speak another language. Isn't the case with Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland?
As a Brit who's now a Canadian, perhaps the UK should give up English and adopt French so you'll speak the same language as your neighbours across the Channel. I understand many Brits understand French, so why not just drop English? It's kind of bizarre that you don't.
Chinese visitors are the largest tourist group from australia, should australia drop the english and swap to chinese? (Really highlights the absurdity of your comment)
