- Today we have a build for Shantae from her plethora of games in Dungeons & Dragons. If you want to be a genie, or half a genie hero in D&D 5e, whip your hair, and transform, this is the build for you.

as a long time Shantae fan, I can confirm INT is indeed her dump stat
One more note: Shantae's hair is not her only unarmed weapon. The fighter's gear from the very first game gives a small expansion to her moveset. Namely a flip kick, a spinning dive kick, and an elbow dash. Where are these in later entries? That's a good question.
A classic side scroller character. It's nice you're giving Shantae a character build now. She's one of the best side scrolling characters in gaming and one of the best female characters in gaming as well. And she's definitely a favorite of mine.
*Shantae*
An earth genasi bard (with a level in monk) and guardian of the seaside Scuttle Town. Said seaside town is currently in the clutches of a nefarious pirate captain and her crew, and now, with her magic powers -- prominently her powers of transformation -- Shantae must quest to find a way to save her town!
My Favorite Video Game Girl of all time at last! I'm Ret-2-Go!
BEFORE WATCHING: Let's see which Bard and Druid classes she gets.
AFTER WATCHING: College of Valor, huh? Interesting... Monk...okay, that works. And...Polymorph from Bard. Well, spoot...I would've bet money she would've taken Druid for the transforms.
I would've figured at least a dip into monk for the martial arts for and unarmored defense, though I thought he would get Tavern Brawler to represent the hair whip.
My first real TTRPG experience in college was during my Shantae hyperfixation, so my very first character was just me doing my best to port Shantae over with my then limited knowledge (I did druid because of scimitar, elemental spells, and wild shape. for a low-level game, it felt fitting).
So, seeing this video just brought me back to my roots of D&D. Thanks for this and keep up the awesome work.
nice to be fair shantae has had her abilities shift like her pirate from when she lost her powers she can be built many ways I like both yours and tulok I would have leaned more monk tbh which means I'm going now to build this concept and not sleep and I'm fine with that lol
You finally did my most wanted build, and I love it. Thank you, Tulok.
Same here.
Same
Same
Yay, now everybody can enjoy this video! I was very happy to be able to commission her!
When you have to dance trough the ever changing danger having an optimistic spirit is key (like Tangle the lemur! Sir Tulok, a build for that other town guardian could be fun! Please?) but having hair that sharp certainly help to crack most challenges.
Shantae is the half genie guardian of Scuttle town, where she together with her friends get involved in many adventures to face dangers from the adorable and not-so-malicious Squid Baron to the Mercedes, evil fem fatale Risky Boots. No matter the danger or limitations, Shantae will always be ret-2-go, but might need to make a dancing show now and then ,that shampoo isn't free... Not even for the town guardian? (so cheap Mayor Scuttlebutt)
Shantae's weakness of having a low intel kind of makes sense.
I believe this is one of the more intuitive builds.
A long time ago, I left a comment saying if you did Shantae, I would subscribe.
Time to hold up my end of the deal.
I would call the jar that spits gems a mimic, but
We know that’s her uncle
Loving the Britta reference at the start. She's not the worst, she's the best.
I was actually thinking of having her as a fire genasi since so much of her promotional art has her using fire in some way, and while most cases when you head to the store to pick spells up, it resembles a book, books don't have to be sorry focused on wizards. Speaking of, I also debated that her intelligence could be higher since she understands what her uncle needs for certain creations, but bard is already so flexible and a low intelligent stat doesn't dictate how good you are with certain skills. Besides, Sky jokes that she can't read, though I'm fairly certain she can, especially since she can read a map, which would need some knowledge behind that as well. I also thought that, due to her naivete, she would have lower wisdom. There are plenty of cases where she trusted someone without knowing they were the enemy (more often than not, Risky). That's poor insight if I ever saw it. I also thought she would be a lore bard for the extra skills and spells. But I'm not disappointed with this build, especially with how flexible she is as a bard. This half genie is "ret-2-go" for any occasion.
understanding her uncle is Bardic Knowledge
Need I remind you, "Dyno-meow?" And "Wait, I don't own a bathtub!"
Two years ago I tried to adapt Shantae to DnD, but with less sucess in the similarity with the game and i gave up. You don't know how much happy this video made me. Ty so much❤️. Also like all the other videos, keep with this great job! 👍
0:19 The plural for Genie, or Djinni, is Djinn.
2:49 Mordenkainen Earth Genasi have Darkvision.
Shantae, YOU stay!
To be Fair to Tulok's complaint about "Why would you use a Lv 8 Spell to turn into a CR 1 Creature?", Well if the Creature you turn into has an Intelligence Score above 4 (Such as a Mermaid's 11), You Get to KEEP your Own Soft Stats Scores AND all your Class Abilities(Arguably I'd Just Modify ALL your Physical Stats To Match the new creature Type's Racial Bonuses, Which for the Creature Mermaid, as opposed to the playable Race, that's +2 Dex, Which is Exactly what Shantae's Genasi Bonuses give her, so you don't even Need to change your stats at all!). Because becoming a Fish Lady doesn't Mean that you suddenly Forget everything you know and most of your Class abilities, Especially for a Bard, are ALL about What you know....
Also even if you were an other Class, like say a Warlock, I'm pretty Sure that the patron wouldn't abandon you after turning you into a Fish lady, so You'd Still have all your Class Abilities... The only one that's Iffy is Sorcerer, Does the Spell Transmute your Bloodline too?
Shantae’s too good for this world ^^
Oh Tulok, you could have written at the beginning, "Sashay, Shantae". You had the perfect opportunity to make a very obscure reference that would fly over the head of most people. Maybe, even you? Man am I old.
If you believe in yourself and with a tiny pinch of magic, all your dreams can come true
Wooo! DANCES AND DUNGEONS
ayyy Shantae! and since she's an earth genasi she can move through hazardous areas without slowing her pace, so I guess you can say she can... dance through the danger?
LOL that is a good one
Well of course Shantae has a flexible build, Tulok, she's a belly dancer.
Been waiting for this build for years, did not disappoint.
Me during the intro: Hmm, I wonder what classes he's going for. She dances a lot, that's kinda her thing, so maybe bard? No, that's stupid, bards don't really center around their performances anymore, they're more casters with a light performer flavoring in 5e, so just because she dances doesn't mean she needs to be a bard.
Tulok: Level 1 is bard.
Me: You're so smart Tulok you always know just what to pick to embody these characters no one does it better than you
Shantae having transformations that have Harpy and mermaid options makes me wanna rewatch the Bayonetta build (Building Character episode 105) since Bayonetta 3 gave her the ability to turn into monster forms.
Mildly disappointed that we went this whole episode and missed the opportunity to to say “Shantai, you stay”. Still love your content!!
I'm missing the reference. Only thing I can think of is the quote from 'The Iron Giant'.
@@atoth62 it’s all good. Famous drag queen, RuPaul, has coined that phrase. She would use it frequently on her show RuPaul’s Drag Race after eliminating contestants.
Jesse Faden also has some combat flexibility, great charisma, and can heal herself
Perfect, now I know exactly how to incorporate her into a campaign if I ever DM one.
3:53 Look, all I'm saying is:
THAT WORKSHOP DOESN'T LIE
RIVALS OF AETHER REALLY DOES HAVE SHANTAE
And with that said, given we have Hades, Minecraft, Hollow Knight, AND Shantae builds, I believe some kind of Touhou build is an inevitability.
I guess the pirate items would be magic items, not that there's a spell in D&D that lets you double jump with a cannon... I think
I was really expecting some druid levels here but I suppose the performance flavour of bard with shape-changing spells makes more sense for the character
Multiclass into artificer for the jump spell lol
Risky is an artificer (with some warlock). Artificers infusions can be attuned to by anyone as long as they're not dead. So shantae could use her infused gear.
Really enjoy these games.
Shantae is definitely powerful if you go with her as a base and not full RP. She would wreck everything if going dragon.
And becides, if a Dragon form was a part of Shantae's list of transformations, She would absolutely use it to rip apart whatever giant mech of the week Risky is using.
She's a good person, but she'll absolutely use every tool at her disposal to get the job done.
@@thegreendragon5390 oh definitely
The Bard build is for focusing on Shantae's dancing. The druid build is for focusing on transformations.
Side Note: Unarmored Defense is inportant in early levels. Take that Monk dip at level 2.
I was just thinking about a Bard/Monk yesterday!
Ooh, this build sounds fun!
3:04 won my sub
I am 100% down for a Risky Boots follow up
I know it's the right call, but wow does it hurt seeing a Magical Secrets spent on Jump.
YEAAAAAAAAAA I'VE BEEN RET-2-GO on this for a while!
Edit: Now I want Shantae in Fraymakers
Genie girl!!!
Gonna immediately throw out my prediction before I watch the vid. Druid. Let's see if I got it
I was a fool
Love Shantae, its awesome to see this one get posted. Now I'm begging you, do a bowser jr build
I would somehow combine both her magic capabilities and her pirate capabilities for more maximum effect
I'd love to see you do Frisk or Chara. I know it's a bit vague what they do in fights, but Evasiveness, High Damage (for Chara) or Charm (for Frisk) and the option to load saves and/or break the fourth wall?
I second this, I’ve been trying to figure out a way to play them for years now but I can never find a build that works perfectly.
For Chara: Reborn Human, Pact of The Undead Warlock. Literally brought back to life by the powers of a nigh-deathless being. If you want to flavor save-load as ressurection. Maybe Clone or something similar could work, far as spells go. Thing is, Undertale is so deeply-rooted in being a video game that translating to another medium(hah) would be tricky.
I could kiiiinda see Frisk being Fighter, on account of being able to fight with anything at hand, but that's already a stretch. I want to hear what y'all think, though.
@@cwovictor3281 I sort of thought blades bard for Frisk (high ac evasiveness, maybe with a dip in rogue as well) and charm spells to make friends and Jack of All Trades to fit everyone's specific needs.
Chara I thought would be straight rogue, but your warlock idea got me thinking; Zealot Barbarian. Living on through the literal power of determination, plus a few rogue levels for evasion and sneak attack (probably swashbuckler or scout)
EDIT: Phantom rogue! Of course, I'm dumb
@@danacarajbNow that I've slept on it, the way the magic system works in the game, the humans could fit different types of Paladin. Conquest for Chara, perhaps. I'm thinking mostly about flavor as opposed to mechanics. Since, mechanically, they don't do a whole lot that's unque to them. Anyone with high AC can be slippery. I do like College of Blades for Frisko though. I guess it's dealer's choice on what exactly they are, depending on which aspects of them you want to emphasize.
This is probably the nerdiest conversation anyone has ever had. Hell yeah.
@@cwovictor3281 your right, their so versatile that most classes could work. I have just had an interesting idea though. Divination wizard dip. I like the idea that the version you play is that one attempt that works, but you use divination spells and portents to tap into the knowledge of previous attempts and saves. Using this logic you could also justify Phantom rogue a bit more with the whole soul stealing, or hexblade warlock, fiendlock (damn there are a lot of builds for stealing souls)
This is a lot fo fun
I thought for sure she would have been a warlock. You know, for the genie subclass?
Shantae shakes things up alright😏
With all the weird spells😅 yeah
Random question: are you not using newer sources like TCOE or MPMM? Or have you just not updated the opening graphic?
I don’t understand why Shanta is the College of Valor I think she’d be College of Swords because in a pinch she’s handy with a Scimitar plus she wouldn’t need an instrument to use her powers while still being able to fight
Maybe her dancing is her instrument
Shantae for Skullgirls *shrugs*
good video
Character Theme Request: Lego Monkie Kid! 🍑🐒
Preferably Red Son and MK, or Wukong and Macaque. Or all of them and their immediate allies. 😊
Could of gone all Warlock if Sculptor of Flesh was written the way it should have been.
Hey, Tulok, I have a character request. How would you play as/build Mipha from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity?
Like, I can figure out some things like she's a Triton and possibly a cleric, but other than that I really don't know how to build her
I pose that we attempt to make Gilgamesh. No not the Fate one, the Final Fantasy one. Much more fun
Great video. I'm going to try to make a video which has video game characters with FFXIV character builds. Shantae will be my first FFXIV build with Bard/Monk/Blue Mage/Dancer and Sage. :)
So if we use the play test one dnd subclass collage of dance we don’t need monk at all
Looks nice, question now is, will her friends and enemy come up on the list?
You don't get it, the problem is that she hasn't seen any ancient dragón to transforma into 😂
Its like with polymorph, if you don't have a cool DM you don't get to transforma into a giant ape
Oh, Britta's in this?
Can you try and build Captain Burns and Benimaru from Fire Force? Really think if someone could figure these builds out it would be you!
Posting this Before the Video: LET'S GO! Thinking... Genasi bard that polymorphs, uses a whip, and is a genie warlock?
Edit: I forgot what the Earth Genasi did! Points to me for calling polymorphing bard, but I wasn't expecting the single monk level!
I think mordenkainen genasi all get darkvision
and the older version (EEPC) gets Pass without Trace at level 1, and the new one gets it at level 5 with Blade Ward as a bonus action at level 1., I'm not sure what he's using here, but he's missing a lot either way. The Bonus action blade ward would be a big boost to a character with lower HP.
Awww cute
Don't know if she has a genie lamp, but I'd forgo the 19th Lv in Bard to get Resilient for 1 Lv in Noble Genie Warlock.
Would that really be on theme? She doesn't have a Genie patron, unless you count her mother, but she really hasn't had much contact with her.
@@atoth62 Well, since that 1 Lv would be just to get the lamp you could say it was the last gift her mother ever gave her?
@@andrewdowns3673 I could see that happening eventually in future games, but it hasn't happened yet. Its not a bad idea, though.
There is a lamp but it's only appeared in two games and while important to the plot was fairly minimal in gameplay. I like the idea of one being a present from her mom though.
Love Shantae really wish she was in smash mii fighter outfit doesn't count
She's a spirit in Smash as well as Risky Boots. Would've loved to see her as an actual fighter though.
Yo could you do another duo build, i had an idea for mono and six from little nightmares
Commenting without watching first: curious if it's Druid for the wild shapes or polymorphing sorcerer? Or maybe genie pact warlock? Some combination of the above?
0:56 I don’t know. Captain Falcon isn’t as sexy as Shantae
3:55 ha no well I know their not gonna adapt shantae except if they do but no they won't
Please. MAKE A JUJUTSU KAISEN BUILD IN DND
Excalibur umbra? From Warframe
Ninjas play free
Did… bro use base Genasi and not Mordenkainen’s Genasi??? ☠️☠️
...man, builds like this make me really hope you'll build Chai from hi fi rush before 5e builds stop being useful as a source of revenue.
Funny enough, I always dreamed of seeing a Shantae build from ya (at least she got an upgrade from Sticker to Mii Fighter at least in Smash). Always imagined Moon Druid as well, but then that's 12 levels for elephant and no charisma abilities until super late, or at bare minimum 2 levels just for the transformations early and having minimum 2 quick transformations a day. That would lose her out on Earthquake and Shape Change, as well as the lvl 19 feat, and getting True Polymorph at last level, but I think it would make for another interesting version of her.
No druid?
I suggest 楓 the...protagonist...of Elfen Lied.
Not hatin on shantae, but when my phone notified me of the upload it stopped in "shan". So of course i hopped my ass on here like "oh boy a legend of dragoon video"
Hey I know this is kind of like off topic but I was wondering if you can make echo from Arcane as a d&d character because I feel like it would be interesting for you to do and it would be hard to do so
Got a big challenge for you, Tulok.
Alice from American McGee's Alice, and Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Good luck.
I would like to see Alice, less enthused about Freddy.
