Even if they belonged to him- actually ESPECIALLY if they belonged to him, then they should be under his protection and you would assume that they would either be asked and the man punished and maybe discharged from the palace rather than killed. No one in the palace then other than the emperor should then have the authority to just end the life of one of his servants. Plus just they weren’t dumb and that would be an incredibly stupid, rash, and inhumane thing to do.

Where the woman is being treated as subordinate to man and it's her fault if another man other than the one she "belongs" to lays hand on her, it's her fault for giving birth to girls and not boys, basically it's her fault for anything that men aren't involved into? Also, a man had the absolute right to sell his daughters like they're mere items for a good amount of money. In the old days women never really had any rights, unlike now (and we still have a long way to go), no matter the country. Yes, it looks absurd, but it was completely natural back then.
It's a harem. A place for women. The Eunuchs got their balls cut off! Pregnancy outside of marriage was a big no no everywhere in the world, in every culture. It's not really patriarchy, or the Eunuchs wouldn't exist. Slander was the crime here.

One of my absolute favorite shows. The story can be quite painful at times, though. The Story of Yanxi Palace is a masterpiece in many areas.
