Thank u for mentioning to wear a mask when working with silica gel. Almost no one says that in their videos. I have asthma and did not wear one the first and second time working with the sand. Trust me, it affected my breathing. When I researched the affects of inhaling the dust from the sand I found that you can have breathing problems due to scar tissue formation within the lungs.
I’m so sorry you didn’t know to wear a mask the first time! Yes, the particles are so fine that they are easily inhaled. I appreciate you reminding everyone how important it is. Best wishes to you!

When you say they were dead, were they not dried like you wanted? Hanging to dry will create a more vintage look since the shape won’t keep as well as silica gel.
Really impressed with the microwave method. However I'm into flower arranging with stems still on, not not so sure if size might be an issue. Great video thanks very much for the info. Oh by the way quick tip for the book method, fold your drying paper first and place into the spine of the book.
Thanks! I know one option is removing the stem to dry the flower and then reattaching the stem with floral wire. Would that be an option for you? Yes, great point on the book method. I usually do that but maybe forgot in the video. Oops! It does help for sure!

It’s best to use a paper like newspaper or parchment paper that can absorb the moisture. Regular printer paper or copy paper might not work as well. I hope this helps! Enjoy!
Lovely presentation, clear and concise and informative. You have a nice way of imparting your knowledge and craft. Resin may help retain the color over time, but sometimes flowers do fade slightly. I find that darker colors like blue and red may fade less than lighter colored flowers.

Great tips! Thank you for a very informative video. Do you know how to preserve dried flowers to use them on the greeting card, so they will not break?
Thanks, Olena! I wrote an article about ways to press flowers, which I think is what you’re trying to do. This makes the flowers flat so you can use them for crafts like card making. Let me know if this helps: www.firstdayofhome.com/how-to-press-flowers/
What about not flat dried flowers, like a bunch of baby breaths or so? Want to make little “bouquet” attached to the card. I don’t want it to be all over the envelope 😊
It might be tough not to have those crumble, but I would try using a fixative like hair spray to set the flowers once they’re dry. I’d only hand deliver the card too. Let me know how it turns out!
I need as much color retention as possible so definitely the silica...I need to use the press method first though as my projects demand flat dried flowers.
Hello! I have never tried using rice for drying flowers, but I know it does help absorb moisture. I seem to recall advice to put your phone in rice if it gets submerged, but don’t quote me on that one!😄 I do know the product I recommended is sold for the specific purpose of drying flowers, and it’s reusable. I have a blog post pinned in the comments if you want to learn more.
Parchment paper. It won’t stick to the flowers or absorb the moisture. Works perfectly. You can also try several sheets of newspaper if you don’t have parchment paper. Good luck! ❤️
Thank you! Different types of flowers take different amounts of time to dry depending on how layered the flower is. For something like a rose, I would wait another 5 days or so for the flower to completely dry after using one of the methods in the video. I find that the center of the flower sometimes remains moist after using silica gel or oven drying. Most flowers will change color slightly with any drying method. They usually fade over time as well, though I think they still look pretty and more vintage when that happens.
okay so im planning on preserving the bouquet my boyfriend sent me to put in a shadow box with our picture. i love the look of the hanging method but have you ever dipped them in expoxy or anything like that to keep it looking more natural?
I think silica gel would preserve the color the best. You can also preserve them in resin, but I don’t think I’d recommend that if you want a shadow box look. My niece air dried her wedding bouquet by hanging them and putting the flowers in a shadow box. It looked beautiful. Hope that helps!
Thanks so much! I found this video so straightforward and I loved how you shared the different results from using the three methods. I just have a quick question, can the silica gel be reused for another set of flowers?
Hello! Thanks for the kind comment! Yes, I show how to do this in a related video. There are time stamps in the description if you want to jump directly to the part where I talk about this. It’s toward the end. I hope it helps! ruclips.net/video/PYZSlruBLxY/видео.html
You need some type of paper to protect the pages of the book and prevent mold. You can also use thin cardboard, newspaper, coffee filters or blotting paper.
If it’s a thick art paper, I think that would work! Newspaper is a good alternative too. Tissue paper may be too thin, and the flowers would likely bleed through. Good luck!
Hi. The daisies will change color slightly. I would expect pinks and reds to become darker. Yellow and white may also turn slightly brown with book pressing. They can still look very pretty, but I would not expect the color to be exactly the same.
You’re welcome! Yes, it can. Please see this link for details on how to recharge your silica gel. www.firstdayofhome.com/drying-flowers-with-silica-gel/
1. Thank you for your time to reply. After which it would turn brown and just powder away? 2. Incase of silica gel crystals, the color and flower gonna last forever?
@@2024-b7x No, the colors may fade slightly over time, but I still think they look pretty, just more vintage eventually. I like silica gel to help preserve colors and shapes the longest.
Very very helpful video . I want to get into the dry flowers this year since it’s going to be a big trend in 2021 and your video has thought me how to get the look ☺️😍. Thank you for sharing, new subscriber here from Austria.
Great informational video😊🌺 I cast flowers in resin and I have tried all these methods. I definately prefer the silica gel . I heard of the cat litter method which I recently tried. Have to say, I did not like. 🙁 Checked flowers in 5 days and still very moist.
Thanks, Maria! Yes, I think silica gel is great. I plan to do some resin crafts very soon. Good to know about the cat litter. I don’t think I’ll be trying that method any time soon!😄
I am trying to dry a rose from my grandfathers casket flowers and cast it in resin, in a glass display dome. Do you have any tips on how to do the epoxy resin and position the flower in the glass dome so when it sits upright that the flower looks good and is preserved for forever? I’ve heard of air pockets in the resin rotting the rose
@@micahdanielle3307First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss...That is a beautiful keepsake...Definitely dry the rose in silica gel and seal with a sealant, maybe try....cutting something that the rose will fit in to and sit on, like an egg carton or even use some cling wrap just to prevent and protect the rose from falling in to the resin..I glue some popsicle sticks together like a square or tohold it upright, use some string to hold up...also make sure to use casting resin and pour slowly in layers...depending on the resin you use. Ive always used a heat gun to pop bubbles that continue to rise and babysat the flower because you can getmore air bubbles although sometimes they look really beautiful, like water. Do not apply the heat too close as it will burn the flower. I hope this helps..let me know if I've forgotten anything...😊
@@mariafuentes-mi2dz Could I set the dried Rose upright in a small mold, pour resin over to cover the rose and fill the mold let that dry, and then pour resin in the glass display dome part way, put the already casted rose in, and then cover with more resin to fill up the display dome? Would the look still be seamless or could one tell that the rose had already been casted and that it was put in the dome and covered again with resin? I just want no one to be able to tell that’s what happened
@@micahdanielle3307 I want to say yes...?? Although I've never done it that way...I have poured resin over a single rose and comes out good but never put it in another mold....why don't you try with a different flower. First? As long as your able to pour your resin as deep as the flower it should be ok...my casting resin is only up to 2 inches...
Do you mean for book pressing? I'm not familiar with butter paper, but you could try using a paper towel. I just don't like it as much because the moisture can bleed through, and a pattern on the paper towel could also leave a mark on the flowers. A few sheets of newspaper are a good alternative.
Ha! I get the impatience thing!😂 Have fun with it, and remember you can reuse the silica gel. It has instructions in the bag on how to do that when you’re done drying the flowers.
I wanted to make rose powder and some essential leaf powder for face and hair mask..can I dry flowers and leaf with this method and grind those and make powder??
Hello! I’m not sure which method you’re interested in, but I would just consider using fresh flowers from your garden so you can avoid pesticides. I wouldn’t use silica gel if I were making a beauty product. Your best bet may be oven drying or air drying.
I like to add little dried flowers to the letters I send to friends. I've always had issues with the purple and blue flowers losing their color in about a week of drying. I'll keep trying though!
I love that idea! I’ve learned that a lot depends on the flower. I usually have the hardest time with light pink or white flowers keeping their color. Exposure to sun can play a big part in flowers fading over time.
Hey this was really informative. Just quick question, how long do dried flowers last? Like could I pick and dry flowers throughout the year to get a bouquet of my favourites from my garden to last till next year? X
I'm glad it was helpful! Yes, as long as you are preserving your flowers along the way, they should definitely last a couple of years. I have some pressed flower art that I made and put in a regular frame about 7 years ago. Some of the flowers have faded (especially lighter colored white or yellow ones), but I think it still looks good...just more vintage. I also have dried flowers I made for potpourri last year, and they look good.
I know some people have tried, but the crystals aren’t as fine as true silica gel. It will work in a pinch, but I wouldn’t do this with special flowers like from a wedding bouquet.
For the Silica Gel method, how big is the red tupperware container that you used? How much silica gel did you need for a container of that size? I am planning to preserve almost 1,000 blooms from my wedding so we are trying to figure out how many containers and how much silica gel we will need!
The largest Tupperware container I have is about 3.78 liters, but you might want to get something bigger for that many flowers. This is the 5lb bag of silica gel I’ve used, and I can probably dry 8-10 roses per batch in various containers, though only 4-6 fit in my red container depending on how large the blooms are. amzn.to/44PHpLC I hope that helps!
I would not. The reason is that flowers from florist shops could have pesticides. I would have a barrier so the flowers aren’t directly touching the cake if you want to use some as decoration.
It depends on what you mean by journaling. Over time, dried flowers will fade and possibly become more brittle. If they are protected with an acid free sheet/paper, that may help. I’d say they’d probably look good for 3-5 years if exposed to light/air.
WoW! This is very helpful! Thank you for the video. Is there any concern with drying with silica in the oven or microwave that you use to cook your food?
I’m glad it was helpful! There are no warnings listed from the manufacturer about using either a microwave or oven, and they include instructions for using them. The only precaution listed is not reusing the container for food afterwards, and that’s because pesticides from flowers could be absorbed into the gel/container. I hope this helps.
You’re welcome! It really depends on how your store the flowers. They could last many years if you keep them away from sunlight and moisture. You can always store them in a shadow box to keep them more protected. The flowers will generally fade a bit in color over time, but they can still be pretty. If you have a special project in mind, let me know.
I really like the video! it's really helpful thank u!! I have questions, is it ok to heat the silica gel in microwave? Can I still use the microwave for food afterwards? And I don't have an oven.. do u know how long I should heat it up in microwave? Sorry for the asking so many questions.. but I kinda lost cuz I never did it before
Hello, thank you! Yes I talk about heating it in the microwave in the video if you want to go to that section. I also have the directions here that you can read: www.firstdayofhome.com/drying-flowers-with-silica-gel/
Yes, you can try. Just know that white flowers tend to turn yellow after drying them. It’s hard to avoid the color change with flowers that light. Good luck!
Yes, there’s a process for “reactivating” the silica gel. Any product you buy will have the instructions (see the one I have linked in the description box). Mine says to bake at 250 Fahrenheit for 5 hours of until the crystals turn blue again. I’ve done this many times.
Hi Jackie. No, it’s not the same as silica gel. Borax can also be used but takes longer from what I hear, and you have to add some other materials to it like sand or cornmeal. I’ve never tried Borax, so I can’t give you any tips there. Silica gel is generally preferred to dry flowers. Please see the pinned comment on this video for a tutorial on that.

So I will USE SOME UR METHODS 4MY ART PROJECT FOR THE FUTURE,
@eskinderkassahun5349 I’m so glad to hear that!
Thank you for all the tips. It seems that I recall use of rice for drying. Is there a way with rice.
Thank you for the amazing video!!
You're welcome! That's very kind. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you very much for sharing this video with us!
Thanks for watching!❤️
Nice sharing 👍
Thank you!😊
Were you using parchment or wax paper in the book? Thank you 🌼
My favorite was the book pressed and I liked the slow silica method.
I used parchment paper. Thanks for watching and sharing your favorite method!
@@FirstDayofHome is it better to use wax paper or parchment paper?
Parchment paper. It won’t stick to the flowers or absorb the moisture. Works perfectly. You can also try several sheets of newspaper if you don’t have parchment paper. Good luck! ❤️
Will they stick to the book if I don’t use parchment paper
@@cristinianobles2118 Yes!
Very informed video I want to ask how to know my flowers are completely dried and ready for resin art? Book process not make the flowers color change?
You still have to dry out the flowers before you put them in resin, or else they will go bad if you don't.
At what point do I spray the flowers with hairspray or other related flower spray? Going to use the hanging method.
You can use a spray after the flowers are completely dry (5-10 days depending on the flower). Good luck!
How long do these keep ok for when they’re dried? :) Going to make my own confetti!
How fun, Gemma! They may last several years if you can protect them from the sun and moisture. Getting married?
Thank you very informative
You’re very welcome!😊
Nice video I had to do a botany project for which I want dry flower it's helpful thanks for such a informative vlog😇❤️
That great to hear! I hope the project turns out well. 🌸💗
Thank you! Best video I’ve found yet!
Thanks so much! That made my day.

Is the parchment paper necessary for the book method?
You need some type of paper to protect the pages of the book and prevent mold. You can also use thin cardboard, newspaper, coffee filters or blotting paper.
@@FirstDayofHome thanks a lot!!
You’re welcome!
Great video. Definitely going to try some of these techniques.
Thank you, Jude. I hope it brings you joy. ❤️
I prefer the old way. Book method
Great video I will try the microwave method
Thanks, Karen. Good luck and have fun!
Will it still work if we do not use a parchment paper in the book press method?
Yes, you can try using blotting paper, newspaper, or thin cardboard to protect the pages of the book. Best of luck!
Can I use art paper or tissue as an alternative for parchment paper?
If it’s a thick art paper, I think that would work! Newspaper is a good alternative too. Tissue paper may be too thin, and the flowers would likely bleed through. Good luck!
Thanks for your lesson
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching.
You saved my life ! Thank you so much!
Oh so glad! You’re welcome, Ines!
Hii can we preserve Gerbera daisies in a book press it will be in the same colour or it colour will change
Hi. The daisies will change color slightly. I would expect pinks and reds to become darker. Yellow and white may also turn slightly brown with book pressing. They can still look very pretty, but I would not expect the color to be exactly the same.
Thanks for the response❤
I have parchment paper for baking uses can I use that for book press
Yes, that’s exactly what I use. 😊
Thankyou ❣️
Hi thanks for this video. Can the silica gel be used repeatedly
You’re welcome! Yes, it can. Please see this link for details on how to recharge your silica gel. www.firstdayofhome.com/drying-flowers-with-silica-gel/
How long does the colour of dried flowers last without hair spray?
The color will usually last a few years. Keep the flowers away from direct sunlight for better results. Hope this helps!
Can you use parchment paper in the place of wax paper?
I actually used parchment paper, not wax paper. So yes you can!
Very very helpful video . I want to get into the dry flowers this year since it’s going to be a big trend in 2021 and your video has thought me how to get the look ☺️😍. Thank you for sharing, new subscriber here from Austria.
Thank you! For some reason, your comment was filtered out. Glad to have you here!
First? As long as your able to pour your resin as deep as the flower it should be ok...my casting resin is only up to 2 inches...
i liked the silica method. Beautiful.
Glad you liked it too!❤️
Can we use a paper towel or butter paper?
Do you mean for book pressing? I'm not familiar with butter paper, but you could try using a paper towel. I just don't like it as much because the moisture can bleed through, and a pattern on the paper towel could also leave a mark on the flowers. A few sheets of newspaper are a good alternative.
@@FirstDayofHome okay with thanks 👍
Awesome vid! Silica gel, both ways I’m going to try. Thanks so much. Leaning towards the SG microwave method due to my impatience. Lol😂❤
Ha! I get the impatience thing!😂 Have fun with it, and remember you can reuse the silica gel. It has instructions in the bag on how to do that when you’re done drying the flowers.
Thank you foryr explanations
U got a new subscriber ❤⚘
Thanks so much, Peerally! So happy to welcome you as a subscriber!
I wonder if I can use Pretty Litter for the silica gel method..I have plenty of that to spare
I know some people have tried, but the crystals aren’t as fine as true silica gel. It will work in a pinch, but I wouldn’t do this with special flowers like from a wedding bouquet.
I like first one tip 😌✨♥️ thank you so much ...
Great! I love that each person has a different favorite. Thank you for watching.
Is it a good idea to spray with hair spray to preserve longer ? I have wedding roses that I have silica dried.
Yes, you can use a fixative like hairspray to make them last a little longer. I'd wait maybe 10-15 minutes between coats.
Amazing ❤️ please tell me How we stored after dried flower.can we store plastic box.
Thank you! Yes, you can store in an airtight container. I have a craft room reveal video that shows how I’m storing some of mine if you want to see.
Thank you❤️❤️
You’re welcome! Enjoy your flowers!
Hi thank you so much for such a detailed video on drying flowers. Could you please tell me what paper u have used in book press method
You’re welcome! It’s parchment paper. You could also try newspaper or blotting paper.
Parchment paper
Hi! Can we use same silica gel again and again?
Yes you can! You can find all the info you need here: www.firstdayofhome.com/drying-flowers-with-silica-gel/
Nice to know these methods
Glad you liked them!
is it safe to put the dried flowers on a cake using the silica gel method?
I would not. The reason is that flowers from florist shops could have pesticides. I would have a barrier so the flowers aren’t directly touching the cake if you want to use some as decoration.
Love the silica method. Thank U sooo much. I'm excited to do my resin bookmark 😁😁😁
Yay! I’m glad you liked that method. Have fun!
@@FirstDayofHome hey I want to use mine for journaling. How long will they last?
It depends on what you mean by journaling. Over time, dried flowers will fade and possibly become more brittle. If they are protected with an acid free sheet/paper, that may help. I’d say they’d probably look good for 3-5 years if exposed to light/air.
Think you very nice
Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. I wanted to ask how long dried flowers last after air drying? :)
Thank youu!! The manual's really helpful! So just to make sure.., u can use the microwave for food afterwards but not the drying container right?
Yes, you can still use the microwave afterwards. It’s only the container you won’t want to use again for food. 😊
Okki thank you very very much for ur answer!! 😊😊 I'm gonna try it for sure!
Nice work dear....! 🌺🌺✌
Thank you so much!🌷🌸
@@FirstDayofHome you are welcome Dear ☺🌺✌
Can we use the first method for white lilies ?
Yes, you can try. Just know that white flowers tend to turn yellow after drying them. It’s hard to avoid the color change with flowers that light. Good luck!
Thank you so much

@@khyatisethia1292 Any time!
Can we reuse the same silicone gel for drying a set of different flowers?
Yes, there’s a process for “reactivating” the silica gel. Any product you buy will have the instructions (see the one I have linked in the description box). Mine says to bake at 250 Fahrenheit for 5 hours of until the crystals turn blue again. I’ve done this many times.
I heard you can dry flowers with Borax, is that the same as Silica gel?
