Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disease that causes the formation of thick, dry, and scaly patches of skin. These patches, also known as plaques, can appear anywhere on the body, but are most commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. Psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system that mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, causing them to multiply too quickly and build up on the surface of the skin. This results in the characteristic red, scaly patches of psoriasis.
