  • Considering buying yourself a Mercedes SLK55 AMG V8?
    In this vlog I thought it'd be a good opportunity to cover everything that is wrong with my SLK55 AMG and what you should be aware of when buying one.
    I still believe the SLK55 is one of the best cars you can buy for under £20,000, however there are a few issues that may make you consider a BMW M3 or an Audi RS5 or TTRS.

    I lubricated all my roof and bootlid rubbers with gummi pflege and adjusted the triangular bootlid supports, which made my SLK 55 quite a bit quieter on uneven road surfaces, as rattles concerned.
    Though the V8 still distracts me from annoying noises 🤣🤣

    My SLK55 gearbox was similar to yours, then the conductor plate/Valve body failed. Once replaced it is now silky smooth even when cold.

    Great video and great car 👍🏼 if I’m gonna be honest though, fuel economy shouldn’t be a reason why you won’t like the car. The expectation of having good fuel economy in a V8 is a tall order. If anything, you would expect the car to have not great MPG because it’s a V8. If anything, it should be smiles per gallon! Driving a V8 is always fun because of sound and power 👍🏼 but great video!

    Howdo, I’ve had my 2005 for about 18 months.couldn’t believe the amount of creaks I had to sort. Gummi Phleged all the seals and sprayed silicone furniture polish into all the plastic joints and seat backs. Totally sorted it.
    Steering is shite. I’ve got R172 steering wheel and seats, which are both nice upgrades.
    I’ve never noticed the throttle lag. Cheers.

    Great video I have a 2006 slk 55. All the things that you mention are true and I can live with! except the gearbox it gets annoying. I’ll be installing a remote starter to let it warm up before driving it. Besides that I love the car

    • @fullyplantd

      Ah nice idea! Yeah the gear box is only annoying when cold. It's 7am, it's a cold winters day, you just want to comfortably get to work and instead of you have to endure being shook about for 5mins lol

    I’ve got the facelift version. The gear changes are ok when mine is cold but it does improve when warm. Make sure you’re running the latest gearbox ECU, I also don’t get the throttle lag like you demonstrated. I’m wondering if this was improved? I know the something to do with the steering was improved in the facelift. Variable steering rack I think.
    But yes, they are thirsty! Definitely not a good daily driver. Weekend blaster though, tons of fun..
    (Also, make sure to buy some lithium grease, silicone spray and gumipfledge to keep squeaks at bay)
    Cheers for the vid 👍🏻

    Slow throttle response must be just your car. Could probably get easily fixed. Ok I have a SLK 350 2007 and it has no lag at all. Mercs often like to rev higher when they're cold before they change gear but after 200 yards it goes back to normal.

      Turn on your flash and take photos underneath, check the rear sub-frame has no rust, that's the big expensive repair you want to avoid. Make sure the roof goes up and down smoothly. Apart from that there isn't much else that can go wrong.

    The throttle delay is in the torque converter mercedes does that so the car doesn't takes off aggressive , maybe if u change the converter it will run better the same reason maybe what's causing the rough shift when cold.

      If you hold the down paddle before you accelerate it jumps down several gears. Using this little trick you can get way better throttle response on almost all modern Mercedes and Astons.

    Don’t blame Mercedes or your car for problems which only result from poor maintenance, friendo! 🙄 You can solve problem #1 with a gearbox oil change (or better not only oil change but oil flush) and problem #4 with cleaning and lubricating all window and roof sealings with a special krytox lubricant (original Mercedes part number of the lubricant is A 000 989 36 60). 😉

    • @fullyplantd
      @fullyplantd  3 года назад +1

      Thanks. The gearbox fluid was done at 40k miles, it didn't make much difference. The garage told me that it's just a high performance gearbox to handle the extra torque which is why it is so aggressive.

    • @stevebullit7560
      @stevebullit7560 3 года назад

      Fully Planted nope, it‘s more or less a standard 7g-tronic gearbox that comes with amg-specific software. normally it should change gears smooth like butter. only facelift-models like my 2008 slk 55 are shifting a bit rough in m-mode but that‘s on purpose for better feeling and quicker gear changes. in c and s-mode it‘s shifting gears also very smoothly. You can also try to make a soft-reset on your gearbox or a fully re-adaptation by your friendly mercedes dealership. 😋

    • @nigelwheeler3312

      Also the throttle response can be reset:
