i absolutely love your interpretation on this! i love the dynamic shaping and the rhythmic shaping! definitely my favorite recording of this solo i've seen
Fantastic performance! I love so many things about your playing of this piece; many people play this piece just to show off their 2-mallet chops and butcher the musicality, but all the phrasing and ideas come through in this recording better than I've seen anywhere else! The phrase starting at 1:24 is a great example of why this performance stands out- the attention to dynamics emphasizes the melody and makes it sound lyrical and flowing which is an great contrast to the rest of the piece and gives the piece a new sound, rather than being a constant blast of notes. However, a lot of other performances (including Cangelosi's imo) keep the same style of playing in that section as in all the others which I think jades the listner and makes the ridiculous section after it not stand out as much. Some other parts of your playing that are great for this piece are how at 1:47 you keeps a solid rhythmic base for the rolls, and also actually phrase bars so it's not impossible to follow as a listener; 2:10 awesome doubles; 2:18 PERFECT rips. Also, unrelated to the playing but the audio setup you used to record is absolutely perfect for this piece; every single note can be heard individually, and the pitches don't overlap for very long like they do in many recordings of this piece.
From rain dance to THIS in 3 years :) BRAVO .

I’ll keep on trying.

How many mallets did you break with the rimshots while practicing?
