Reviewed this short video to refresh my memory of the technique. I've watched the video a few times in the past and only just realized that, after the initial rows, Mimi is knitting with only one needle! She's my go-to for all things knitting.
Mimi, I loved your tutorial. My garter tab cast on is a bit tight and after watching your demo, from now on I will only pick up one leg of the stitch instead of trying to pick up both. Thanks.
Thank you for making it clear from the beginning that the garter stitch tab is used on top-down triangular shawl patterns. I am assuming that a garter stitch tab is not needed for triangular shawl patterns that begin at the bottom tip of the shawl and work up to the top edge of the shawl.
Hi Judy, No problem at all - we were all newbies once! The garter tab cast-on is used so that you will have an unbroken edge of garter stitch along the top edge of your shawl. If you just cast on and started working without it, you would have a section right in the middle where the garter stitch stopped on your piece. It's just for beauty and consistency.
You are a wonderful instructor, clear and concise. You don’t go too fast for us beginners, and your filming is spot on. Thanks, Mimi.

You are correct, Vivian. The garter tab is only needed on top-down shawls, not bottom-up shawls. Happy knitting!
This tutorial is great. Thank you so much.
So clear, very helpful, many thanks!
You made this so easy - thanks!
This video was really clear, thank you
The “heart” analogy was very helpful. Thank you!
What is the advantage of using this cast on to start a triangular shawl? (I'm a newbie, sorry!)
