Hello Mr.Chang, I just got into Bonsai and discovered your channel, and I must say, I am very impressed by the quality and breadth of knowledge you behold and convey in your videos, keep up the good work sir! You’re inspiring the new generation of Bonsai hobbyists.
Thank you so much for you videos Mr Chang! Please do talk more about the Chinese view on bonsai art. I would really love to hear more on this and maybe a parallel between Japanese and Chinese trees of the same species. I do think the Chinese are greatly under-appreciated on a lot of things.
Hi William, I'm glad you found the video helpful! I have a video coming out soon and it will include a brief tour of my garden! Let me know if you guys would like to see an in-depth bonsai garden tour. I'm always open to suggestions!
I like your videos are very good I've been doing bonza for three years and I've got a lot of information and I hope to continue watching your videos bonsais is a great hobby and I'm calling from North I'm sending the text from North Carolina
Thank you for your support! I will continue to share my bonsai knowledge and I don't plan on stopping any time soon! Glad that I could be of help to you in your bonsai journey :)
Great video as allways! I was wondering if you had a tip for a substitute for sandy loam? Its not really that easy to come by here where I live, perlite and peat moss is easily avaiable though!
Mr. Chang, I recently discover you channel, Wow! Amazing!! I really love what you do and the vision you share. You bring us back to the basic of bonsai and share your 50+ years of personal knowlege in bonsaï 🙌 By the way, I realy enjoy earing you talking of John Y. Naka basic rules, and sometime to deviate from them😉 it is music to my ears🙏
Great to hear your tips and for the encouragement. As a beginner, I do find it difficult to not give up as all my trees are young and not very beautiful and I've managed to kill others😢. With so many failures it's great to hear how I might avoid them in the future 😊
Don't give up! I've killed many trees during my 50 years of doing bonsai. I got to where I am today through trial and error and never giving up. Keep going and you will have beautiful and healthy bonsai. If you have any questions, feel free to comment or email them to me and I will do my best to help!
Great videos! You don’t have a lot of stuff on new material . My question would be for small trees, cuttings and starts, do you use the same bonsai soil, what pot size, and how much do you worry about training. I thank you for your wisdom.
Came across your channel and love it - clear succinct and very educational. Where are you located - the house / ambience is pure bliss ! Best wishes Sir
Thank you for your encouragement. Glad you asked…I am about to do a nice CA Coastal Life oak tree which is a volunteer seedling grown in a garden. I have one Valley oak…the leaf shape is beautiful but takes a lot of ramification to somewhat reduce the size of the leaves. It is suitable for larger size bonsai. Stay tuned! Milton
Also, your recommendation soil perlite, Pete moss, and Sandy loam is much lighter than mixtures with clay or akadama or pumice or lava rock. Is the light weight mixture ever an issue, such as holding too much water?
You pretty much have to go look online or where bonsai pots are sold. I bought most of mine from Southern CA importers and at bonsai shows. I bought some many years ago when I was touring China and went to Yixing which is a small town near Shanghai known for its dark clay bonsai pots. Avoid pots are are thin and brittle!
Hi, I see you are using drip watering system or similar in the background, can you describe a bit? What you are using, when? It's possible downsides or pluses against manual watering of your trees. Thanks for the answer ❤
I love that you bring some Chinese influence into your work. So many videos from the US are heavily Japanese influenced.
Thanks, Gavin! I'm glad you can see the Chinese influence!
verry nice sir!🌲🌟🌲
Thank you!
Hi Milton, the Chinese influence is very apparent in your trees. Images from the classical paintings come to mind. Old, mystical, mythical, poetic.
Hi there, thank you! I'm glad you can see the Chinese influence!
Principles of bonsai design by David degroot is a good book

Thank you for your wonderful advice. I started using your soil mixture. Where can I get the large heavy pots? Thank you. Mike

Where can I get loam top soil, thank you.
Try your landscaping tree. If you can’t find it, just use top soil!
👍👌👌🙂
