I bring 2 pairs of shoes - my sketchers Mary Janes, and one pair of low heels for formal nights. The sketchers go from the ship to the beach, and are great for walking in.

My regrets would be shoes with heels; even kitten heels incase ship rocky, you can easily twist ankle; purses for outfits; not necessary; don’t have space on dinner table; uncomfortable trying to keep balance on lap, don’t want to hang on chair. One year brought a bath rob; don’t need. All the jewelry choices for outfits, usually end up wearing only earrings or one set over and over. Still not sure if I should bring Fitbit/smart watch to count steps; not sure how wifi will work and if cost worth it. Always regret bringing too many or too little outfits, still overthinking clothes and shoes, but getting better. I think I’ve decided not to bring soft drink, just order water and soft drinks on cruise app to be in room when we arrive.

That said, when traveling nowadays a Kindle or Kindle App makes it much easier to travel with as many books as a person wants. For the floppy hats, it is a must-have for me. I burn so easily. But my trick is to pull my hair in a low pony or bun, then I use 2 bobby pins, one on each side and anchor it down. Easy to remove for security. Takes an additional 15 seconds. I pack clothes in it and around it so that it does not get crushed at the airport, and wear it on board.

I regret not bringing a casual sundress for dinner, instead of the dressier dresses I brought, which weren’t even considered “formal”, but definitely a lot dressier than the shorts and tees people wore to dinner. I was actually taken back at how casual people dressed for dinner. I guess a lot of things have changed since my last cruise. I actually like dressing up for dinner on cruises, but felt way out of place.

@@Mom23kittiesHello from sunny Arizona! I can attest to this very casual attire in the MDR on both Celebrity in Nov 22 and even over Christmas on Princess. People wearing shorts and t-shirts and flip flops to the MDR shouldn’t be the norm in my opinion but you shouldn’t feel out of place if you do want to dress up on your cruise. My husband and I dressed up to go to dinner every night and we loved it. On casual nights we wore slacks and I wore a pretty blouse but on “formal” nights we dressed to the nines. I feel like the people who didn’t dress appropriately for the MDR were the ones who felt out of place. Yes, sadly, things have changed and not for the better. People live very casual lives these days……what’s wrong with dressing up a few nights on a vacation you’ve spent thousands of dollars on?? Just my opinion….

I wear dressy clothes because I love to dress up! People are too casual in my opinion. To each his own. If I could get my husband to wear a tux I would be in heaven! He wears a nice suit and I bring two formal dresses and other nice dresses for dinner. The dinning room is elegant, I should be as well. I usually bring 3 hats, my husband brings one but wears all the hats during travel. I bring a kindle. I think hard bound books are a good choice. I leave them in the library. We don’t bring our Yetis because we misplace them or forget them. We bring an older camera so we don’t loose or damage the good camera. My husband writes for the newspaper and magazines so he likes to take photos. He is also a birder! So a camera is essential! We are cruising several times this year. One will be on Royal Caribbean my first time. I am very excited. Coco Cay here I come! I do love any violinists on a cruise or at a resort! I like your videos and find them informative and helpful!

For the casual travel photos, our smart phones do a great job. But I don't leave home without my DSLR camera and it's variety of lenses and filters (and often a tripod). From sunrises to sea birds on board and flowers to landscapes in ports, photography is a huge part of my cruise. So for anyone really interested in photography, taking a good camera along is really worth it. Otherwise, you have a great list in this video.

After 14 cruises I have learned the hard way to not over pack. When it comes to shoes I limit myself to no more than 4 pairs.. 1 pair of good sandals ( Clarks Cloudsteppers) are the best in my opinion,1 pair of good walking/active shoes like Sketchers for when I get off the ship, and 2 pair of comfortable yet stylish dress shoes to wear in the MDR,Casino, are night life.I bring more Tops than bottoms because my bottoms seldom get dirty whereas tops are more likely to get soiled. And I bring costume jewelry that goes with multiple outfits and if i loose or break it.. no big deal.As for bathing suits, if i bring more than one I make sure they are the exact same bathing suit just in different colors.. this helps when it comes to tan lines.. nothing worse than having different tan lines when you get home. Yes i use sunscreen but like many i don’t apply it as often as I should. ✌🏻❤️ Love your Vlogs.. very informative ❤️

Regarding shapewear, I bring it to wear on formal and semi-formal nights. I want to look good in my dresses, not be self conscious because I’ve got various bumps showing. My husband also brings his tuxedo for formal nights. Granted, at this stage of life, we cruise on more formal cruise lines (Crystal in the past, now Silversea), so it makes sense. If we were still cruising on mainstream lines like Royal (as I did when I was in my 20s/30s/40s), that are less formal, we probably wouldn’t bring such formal clothes.

Sun hats are a must if you are cruising in tropical waters, particularly in the South Pacific (where ozone layer is actually thinner). You need the all round brim to shade not just your face but also your body. They also keep you cooler. If you are worried about them flying off then have one with a tie that can be tied under the chin.

On overpacking, it depends on how long you will be gone. I don’t mind wearing daytime “bottoms” (shorts or pants) 2-3 times, but I prefer to wear tops only 1 time, max 2 times. Our upcoming trip is 2 weeks - a couple of days at the embarkation city, then a 7 day cruise, then 5 days in the disembarkation city. I don’t want to pay ridiculous ship cleaning fees or spend my time on ship or on land doing laundry, and at the same time I don’t want to be wearing dirty and/or smelly clothing. So, I’m trying to find a happy medium in bringing enough clothes for two weeks but not overpacking too much (I.e. I’m not bringing 14 bottoms and 14 tops). We are going on a more formal cruise,so I need to bring 1 formal outfit, 3 cocktail attire outfits, and 3 smart casual outfits, just for evenings.

Google travel clothing - I have purchased some pieces that are invaluable, including lightweight wool shirts, travel pants ("normal" looking, NOT the zipper-off, thank you very much!) that are light to pack, don't stay wrinkled, repel stains etc., and a couple of non-wrinkle skirts or dresses that can be dressed up or down. In a pinch, I can wash them out quickly at night (literally in minutes) and hang to dry in just a few hours. Same with my underclothing - quick wash once or twice before bed during the trip, and I can pack a lot less. Travleing other than cruising, I am a 1 bag max girl, and that includes trips that can span 3+ weeks.

I’m bringing some older underwear on my next trip - I will throw it out as I use it. That might work for tshirts too - if you’re considering getting rid of them, you could toss them as you go. You will still have to pack them, but your suitcase will relax a bit and you’ll be able to fit the inevitable new tshirts and other purchases.

One of our bags was held on embarkation. It arrived about 8pm with a note taped to it to call a particular extension. Security came while I opened the bag. All this over a battery operated personal fan from the hospital. Once they actually saw it in person everything was fine, but it was a bit of a Hassel. Not sure how to pack this for future cruises without another scene.
This was minor compared to the 20 minute search my husband went through at the TSA airport check in.
He is a LVAD patient and has life support equipment on his body 24/7. We had TSA approval letters, diagrams of all equipment packed on carryon with explanation of use. Diagrams and labels for all equipment on and in his body. Before any negative comments, all equipment has been TSA approved for everyone who may have this. 4, yes 4 TSA agents refused to even look at the paperwork. We even had the lvad coordinator information. It was stressful, embarrassing and completely unnecessary situation. They even tried to "test" the equipment on his body! It is life supporting equipment. I went the extra mile with copies that could be left with security each time we came through if necessary. What really set me ablaze was the total and complete disrespect to us both and refusal to look at the paperwork that would answer any and all questions.
It git bad enough my husband disconnected himself for the alarm to sound so they would quit trying to push buttons which could cause a malfunction and kill him. We were cleared to travel by the doctors. I realize this is not a common situation but all items that are FAA/TSA approved should be at least shown to officers during training.

    1) I packed almost all swimsuits and swim coverups instead of actual clothes for during the day. I didn’t realize how often temps would be chilly from AC, to inclimate weather, to windy on-board conditions.
2 I packed way too formal of dresses for my comfort level, because I too thought formal nights would be black tie mandatory. I do think it’s fun to dress up, but I aim for cocktail-level of dress for formal nights now.

Thanks! Great info- going to be a first time cruiser. In terms of books, some lines have libraries, and that can eliminate bringing any books-

To this I will add: If I have any leftover space in my suitcase, I'll bring a book or two to donate to the shipboard library. I've found some hidden treasures in the library and I assume they are books that other cruisers have left behind.📗📘📙📚

I only brought one book and I finished it in two or three days 😞 I finally got to the library when it didn’t have the art show in it, looked at all the book titles and…they were horrible. Most of them were in Spanish, the rest were very unappealing.

Just came back from a cruise and next time I will pack a lot lighter! A pair of black slacks can be matched with 2 or 3 different tops for evening. The magnetic clips and hooks were a life saver.

Very true. We can definitely match a few toos with different pants

I do that - a very nice pair of silky black pants and some nice tops. We don't go to the MDR every night, so it has worked very well. Even on cruises that were 18 - 24 days long. And magnets are fantastic. I mount some on my ceiling and string some lighter paracord between them and have an instant clothesline...just add clothespins.🤩

I have used a floppy sunhat because the baseball cap doesn't provide enough coverage from the sun. But the sunhat has a chin strap and then I don't lose it.

My biggest regret with my first cruise was taking tooooooo many clothes!! Since then, I write down each day (sea and excursion) and what clothes I'll need for all day. I use that as my guide. Then when I actually open my suitcase and start putting in clothes (based on my list) I can easily pack less! It is very helpful.

I bring my sun hat but it has a string so I can wear it on my back. I never leave home without it. I have to agree with the soda. I regretted not bringing candy. Sometimes I have a sweet tooth

I have been binge watching you and some others for my cruise in 2 weeks. I will be with mom, so not too many things needed, we are both low maintenance lol. I have learned so much from this and those commenting. Yes, too much close and probably books. I have to meditate on this. LOL

I'm a reader too. I usually only pack a couple. The ship (Carnival) has a library with books left behind by other cruisers that are free to take. If I run out of my books, I simply borrow and return books from there.

Hi. We bring a post it note pad used to leave messages for our cabin steward. Stuck to the mirror. They know where to find any message from us. Greetings from Perth West Australia.

People who don't know what the various lenses and filters for a camera do aren't photographers; they shouldn't just leave the expensive camera at home, they should leave it in the store. But for those of us that are photographers, taking photographs may be one of the primary reasons we go on a cruise. It all depends on one's goals.

I must admit I think the same. It is true, you will get a better pics using bespoke camera equipment but ONLY if you know what you're doing with it and how to stage the shot. I'm frequently amazed by how many people do still chuck money at cameras unnecessarily not appreciating they have quite a powerful point and shoot camera on their smart phone.

I didn't realize pineapple decorations were a thing on cruises. We cruise with DCL though so the cabin door 🚪 decorations are usually Mickey and Friends-and even upside down they're just Mickey and Friends. 😉 We did do the fish 🐟 extender thing, and had to bring quite a bit of little gifts 🎁 for the exchanges. While the kids enjoyed "zapping" the other cruisers I was glad when they aged out of wanting to do it. Nice to not have to pack 10 little keychains and other assorted trinkets that the giftee's probably didn't use or need. 🤷‍♀️

I'm going on a 16day cruise next year on NCL. I made sure the ship has self service laundry facilities. Since I plan on just taking a carry-on, I rather pay around $10 to wash my clothes mid-way than have to carry an extra piece of luggage and deal wth baggage fees....plus I will have more room for souvenirs lol.

We brought a specialty soda that I knew would not be on the ship for celebrations. We also brought snacks to have with us when in port and didn’t regret taking either.
