i know what you mean - the revival version is much livelier, and has a lighter, bouncier feel to it - but it's not an orchestra! the pit band in the revival is absolutely tiny compared to the originals; it only has a pianist, a percussionist, a synth/electric keyboard player, and 1 reed player who switches between clarinet, alto sax, flute, and oboe. I'm Breaking Down is a clarinet song, which is what gives it its style

I dont know if you mean the entire Marvin trilogy or just In Trousers, but I'll go ahead and explain the whole thing cause it's my favourite hobby. The Marvin Trilogy is comprised of (surprise) three one-act musicals: In Trousers, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland. They were written in that order and chronologically tell Marvin's story, but March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland were later combined to create Falsettos. I'll admit I dont know much about In Trousers, but I do know that it's set while Marvin is having an affair with Whizzer, but Trina doesn't know and they're still married. In that show Marvin does a lot of reminiscing about his childhood and other events in his life, so it's less clear when it takes place. It also doesn't help that the whole show is an insane fever dream that even William Finn doesn't fully understand. March of the Falsettos (or act 1 of Falsettos) is set in 1979, after Marvin and Trina's divorce, when Jason is nine. Falsettoland (act 2) is set in 1981, at the start of the AIDS crisis while Jason is 13. I'm Breaking Down was originally in In Trousers, then removed (but put on the cast recording as a bonus track), THEN put in again in 1985. It was later added to Falsettos with some lyrics changes - still sung by Trina and still the same message, but at a slightly different time in her life.
