Eugene Marais was highly intelligent....both a medical man and a lawyer who did not fit easily into his Boer nation or Britain of the time. Soul of the White Ant was his famous contribution to science. His addiction probably came from ptsd after his wife died soon after their marriage.

Eugene Marais wrote; " Die Siel van die Miere" ; the ,Soul of the Ants" Because of the Boer War he refused to write in English. What happened a fellow from Belgium because Flemish is close to Afrikaans; stole his work and received the Nobel Prize for sociology. My favourite work of him is a poem in Afrikaans called; Marbalel;" Vannig oor die klippe dripple Marbalel.Vrolik is die klinkgelinge wat haar engelinge vergesal"

Yes I'm a bit familiar with the plagiarism event, probably one of the things in his life that wore him down.

You should check out the fantasy trilogy The Vorrh, by B. Catling. Catling writes Marais in as a character in pt. 3. It opens with his suicide on the farm
