  • Jemima Wilkinson was a charismatic American Quaker and evangelist. Wilkinson and her followers founded Jerusalem, New York, which also includes present day Penn Yan. Seneca County Historian Walter Gable presents the second in his series of famous historic people with Finger Lakes roots.

    My 5th great grandfather was Judge William Potter, a supporter and later detractor of Jemima Wilkinson. Are there any books about Wilkinson that you can recommend? I look forward to visiting Yates County someday. This is a fascinating story.

    Thanks for sharing this history! I believe my ancestors may have been part of the founding of Jerusalem and was looking for more information on the group and Jemima Wilkinson. This is a great help!
