- I spoke with David Frum, a Canadian-American political commentator and a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush. He is currently a senior editor at The Atlantic as well as an MSNBC contributor. We talked about why some republicans followed trump and others are repelled by him, how Kamala Harris can navigate the criticism that she’s too progressive, and why it wasn’t fair for it to be left to her to understand the root causes of our border issues.

His mother, Barbara Frum was a highly respected and much loved news anchor in Canada. I remember watching her every night anchoring the evening news and looking up to her as an intelligent and kind woman. She died young unfortunately, from cancer but it is not surprising that David is so thoughtful.

And yet when it comes to women’s rights and healthy the only comment I noticed was relating to how difficult it is to enforce those laws and how far reaching a ban on abortion would be. And how that enforcement is the problem for Republicans. Oh and by the way “abortion” doesn’t even come up in suggested text/spell check on my Apple i phone now. Way to go Apple.

Works matter. The Dems completely destroyed Libya and fuelled the wars in Syria, Palestine and Ukraine. Neocons like David Frum are responsible for the Iraq war and the War in Afghanistan, and biden is responsible for the shameful flight from Afghanistan. The death toll of all of that is in the millions.
Trump, by contrast, is responsible for the Abraham Accords and and peace talks with North Korea. He started no wars.
I learned a lot from this. Mr. Frum is a conservative to whom I will continue to listen.
What puzzles me in the nine years thatTrump has tormented my soul, is the dearth of sane Republican voices who have made themselves heard. I can only hope that for love of country, they will also quietly do the needful thing.

David Frum says all the things I've wanted to say about the current political climate, but hadn't been able to so eloquently express. My father was career military & taught us our history during wartime as well as post war occupation, the alliance formation of NATO, racial integration policy post WW2,etc.
My question to your guest-What was it about JD Vance’s military service as a Marine, that somehow turned him against Ukraine and is now pro Russia.

Great interview katie! It's wonderful to know that Mr. Frum will actually vote blue in this all important election. It's reassuring to know that even long-time republicans can maintain their conservative viewpoints but vote for the country over a party. I swear I remember that the parties used to switch colors each election cycle to discourage this tribalism that we have today. Thanks for sharing this video with us!
9:05 Finally, someone is stating exactly what would be involved in enforcing abortion laws. The surveillance of women from first menses to menopause, controlling women’s movements across state borders to ensure they do not travel into states where abortion is allowed, the need to issue Soviet style “internal passports” to control their movements across states, arresting and imprisoning women who are suspected of seeking an abortion, or who may be experiencing difficult pregnancies, criminal investigations of EVERY miscarriage, and whatever else a police state can invent.
None of that would happen , (scare tactics)

Is it a good idea to forget Trump? An anti-Trump vote and anti-Trump ads are crucial in this election. Instead, I would turn to exposing Trump, totally naked, for all the crimes that he committed, for his never-ending lies, for his serious mental illness and age-degeneration - AND for the danger that he poses to our democracy, so clearly expressed in "Project 2025".
We have to motivate independents (like me) to go to the polls; they comprise 43% of American voters. We need the anti-autocracy votes of moderate Republicans as well. Both groups take seriously the dangers to our freedom - the dangers of letting a wannabe dictator finish off our constitutional republic.
We can’t forget Trump.
What vision? Despite not having dementia she is not much better at putting a sentence together than biden😂😂

Katie.....your skill as a podcaster/interviewer gets better and better, and it's always been excellent. Re: the many GOP's who flipped from anti-DJT to MAGA's, these people sometimes have excellent capabilities but anyone who trades their integrity and alignment with democracy for a membership in the Trump Clan has sealed their fate and clearly demonstrated their limited intellect. We all know the limited life cycle of Far Right movements and their leaders. Re: Mr. Frum's prognostications for Harris.....as most conservatives do, he omits certain critical factors from his calculus in determining voter support. One such variable is "hope". Look at what that variable did for Obama.....its influence resulted in the impossible, a person of color elected President. Harris (perhaps inadvertently) brings 'hope' into a political climate literally begging for such relief. It's that variable, along with a solid resume that IMO will produce the first female president.
I would love it if Harris could become president

Unfortunately the "news cycle" isn't interested in informing you in a critical thinking (like this piece) kind of way -- they are just looking for ratings and how much they can squeeze out of advertisers. If the media had stopped covering Trump in 2016 (and even more so when the "I wuz robbed" bit started after 2020 election) then like a vampire staked out in the sunlight, he might have just shriveled up and blown away. The man CANNOT live without being in the public eye; that's why he had so many shills working for him to make sure he never got off Page Six (which used to really BE a "Page Six" in NY Media publications-- now its own separate feed)
Speaking the truth is not being a hero, it ia just being true to what you are sworn at the time you accept a public job.

I used to organize workshops and seminars dealing with developments in news-technology and organization. My general recommendation concerning the length of speeches was 20 minutes. Beyond that, you could watch the audiences eyes first wandering and then glazing over. Pep-rallies follow different rules, but they're also not about content!
I feel very whiplashed and very emotional. I understand things are so backwards and upside down. I don't understand the Trump revolution.

I'm so disappointed. I was hoping for a new moderate ticket. We didn't vote for her in the primary and now we are told everyone is behind her. How? This just doesn't seem fair.
Largely, it's a time thing. We need a good strong candidate now, not months from now.
You want a moderate ticket. Kristol want a Reagan-style conservative ticket. Neither is an option this time around. Republicans screwed the pooch and let Trump take over their party. I’m actually impressed that she would appear so naturally. It shows us that many of the attractive people on TV appear that way thanks to makeup people, hair dressers, and other aestheticians. Harris is great but we didn't learn our lesson with Hillary. We just lost the election (from a former Republican).
Hillary had some baggage and Trump used it against her.
Don't think things are the same. We now know that it is possible for Trump to win. First time, many thought he couldn't and didn't bother to show up. This time we have four years of seeing how bad he actually is along with four more years of observing how bad he is. Let's not repeat our 2016 mistake. Get out the vote.

Katie is a very pretty woman but somehow feels that she doesn’t have to make an effort with her appearance in these videos. Her glasses are glaring on the screen and the technology is poor in the videos which I feel could be addressed by someone with technology expertise. But an excellent interview as usual.
