They are carrying out surveillance. They just misjudged the timing of where the funeral cortege would be coming on that road and accidentally drove into it. It was a stupid mistake. They were British intelligence soldiers and obviously didn't know the back streets of Belfast well enough.
Absolutely horrendous, even as a republican it's hard not to have empathy for these soldiers, the fear they must've felt is unthinkable. In saying that, they shouldn't have been there, either on the andytown road on that fateful day, or in Ireland at all, and their state allowed stone to murder the man who was being buried. I was born in 1995 and it amazes me to watch videos like this, my generation are the luckiest every to have been born on this island, mainly due to the struggle that preceded our birth. We should be forever grateful to the men and women who laid down their lives fighting the sectarian state so their children could live free from war and oppression.
