Were installing a door at my cousins house and i told them these steps and they blew me off 😂 Im just watching them struggle right now drinking a brew. Next time i install a door at My House ill be sure to follow your steps brother!
Beautiful end product! Watching this makes me realize that most people don't understand what it take to make all of the details of a house come together and they wonder why it costs so much. Excellent job, thank you for the detailed video 👍
Thx man. Glad I found your video. My dewalt gun was the way to go. People its not as easy as he made it but the nail gun is a life saver because shit is shifting on you. Invest the $250 on a gun. I waited till i was 50 yo to buy my nail guy, should have bot mine alot earlier.
Thank you. This is a good video because the instruction worked for me, and because your presentation was straight up and without extra noise (like a theme song and credits). Good job.
Great video, besides the information needed without the long winded explanations, you set the hecklers straight about fasteners to use, I use my finish nailer also, but there are a couple points you still hit on that I will use on my work, thanks for the info
I love how you did your trim, with the top over hanging a bit. I’m curious how you did the same style around windows, top and bottom, with the butting technique vs mitering. Thanks for the vid!
Great video! I've put pre hung doors in before and needed a quick refresher. This was perfect. Thanks... I don't have a nailer so I was wondering... what is the advantage of putting the decking screw thru the door stop? Won't I need 2 more screws, one on either side for stability to go thru the shims? Thanks again!
Thank you, glad I could help! Technically the screw will hold it to the stud and then when the trim goes on it should be nailed to the stud and the frame. The trim will reinforce the frame quite a bit. But if you want to just add a nail to either side of the stop if you dont feel the trim will be enough, feel free to. Good luck on your project!
Love this! Thank You! Question- after attaching the hinge side I found the bottom shim/hinge area too tight, the door doesn't shut properly. How do I fix this?
Great video. I’m going over new flooring and my floors are level. I tuned in to find this video and was curious about using nails or screws. I’m going to use my 16 ga nails
You'll need to trim the door. There is a 2x2 along the bottom of the door inside. Remove the door from the hinges and lay it down and cut a bit (1/2" or 3/4") off the bottom of the door with a circular saw. Then rehang the door. Hope that helps!
For one door the basic install shouldn't take but an hour to remove and replace, them the trim can take an hour, after that it's just waiting for spackle, caulk, and paint to dry. Day is easy depending on your skill level.
Check it again for square in the hole and level on the hinge side. If it's level on the hinge side and the reveal when the door is closed looks fine then it may be an uneven floor or wall making it off. Or it may just be the trim is uneven. It's hard to say without seeing it
It should only be on one side. Set it in place so the trim holds it flush, then on the other side shim it left and right as needed until the reveal looks good with the door closed. It's mostly the same otherwise, don't overthink it. It just takes time to get it where you need is all
Same way as the door strike. Placed my shims behind it, pulled back so the reveal gap was right and fired a nail through it to pull it back. The shims keep it at the correct distance and to go too far
Great video. I have 3 double-doors to install. They’ve been sitting on the floor waiting for the install. Basically I had an addition built, and 3 original home windows were turned into doorways. The double-doors of course open in the middle, and they are NOT solid doors.. I had shims delivered with the doors. Question…for my application, can I use a nailer like in the video, or would I need screws? What size nails? And can you recommend a nailer that I can look for to purchase? I don’t own one, and I’m not sure of their correct name to search. Thank you.
Thanks! If the doors are hollow core and not solid core, a nailer like I used is fine. Solid core means solid wood doors and they may weigh between 80-100 lbs each, hollow might weigh 5-10 lbs. I used a 18 gauge brad nailer with 2" long nails, mine is a Ryobi 18V battery powered version. Good luck!

You know what’s funny? You made a comment about you using 18 gauge nails for the door frame… I’m watching this video because I’m installing a new door frame for my bedroom. The mf that installed this shit didn’t nail or screw it in… no door shims nothing… the only thing holding it was the door trim which was the only thing nailed to the wall. So the door trim and silicone was the only thing holding this door frame… no wonder my door frame broke easy..
Dont make the same mistake I did and think this is a job you can tackle youself if you are not a professional. There are SO many variables that cant be accounted for in these videos. I found that you make this look easy while in practice, it wasn't for me. Had all the same tools, followed all the steps, couldnt get the door to line up, shims to stay in place, or get anything square. My floor is level.
True. I'm merely showing the steps, but some doors do fight more than others. If you feel like tackling it, then all the power to you, otherwise you at least know what you're paying for if somebody comes in. Learning is learning.
My walls are so out of level I'm opting to go flush rather than level. As long as the door is square inside I'll be good enough without renting a heavy equipment to push my house back to squared. Next time I buy a house I'm bringing a level.

I'm not working in a mine, building a bridge or high rise and guess what all the screws and nails still went where I put them just fine and the door was hung. Whatever

You said it, my man there’s sometimes many different routes to the same destination. For a more modern application like a lake home, or modern farmhouse style; etc sometimes the mitered window and door casing might seem a little too traditional or formal. This why I did not 45 the miters over the doors in A basement finishing project I completed within the last year at a lake property I have in Wisconsin. Took forever to get done, But it’s beautiful now especially that it’s a full exposure walk-out. I wish I could add pictures to these replies but oh well Thanks again for the tips of the trade. The problem I had is I told Home Depot that I needed a door that would fit a 32" space, but when I got the doors I needed 42" to install them because the doors were prehung. All would have been fine if Home Depot would have asked the bigger questions since most of us aren't builders. So Home Depot is not as of yet accepting my doors back for the correct size.
Ooof yeah, that's not cool. I have friends that have been trying to get pre-made doors through home depot for 2 years and they still haven't made them right, and they even came out and measured themselves. Sometimes you just have to be the louder person to get them to fix their mistake because they should've been the ones asking questions and filling out a sizing sheet. Hope you get it squared away
Home Depot doesn’t always hire people who know how to fix things. I’ve worked there and the majority just sell product they don’t know how to install doors or do plumbing. The only people that know a lot are full time employees or people who used to be in construction/plumbing etc. The slogan they have of you can do it and we can help just really means we can help you find it not help you do installation of products
It all matches now. After I finished this install at my parents I finished changing all the doors and trim to match. Things happen in stages, it'll all get there eventually.

Did this today on my rental at the lake this short, concise video was exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Glad it helped!
Why not put the shims directly behind the hinge take out the center screw and put a 2 1/2 inch screw through the shims and into the frame.
You totally could. Typically that's more for mounting heavy solid core doors or steel outside doors. This is more for lightweight inside doors
You’ve saved me thousands with this video along with your trim videos. Thank you

Tough to say without seeing it. Can you email me a pic?
Great video. I’m going over new flooring and my floors are level.
I tuned in to find this video and was curious about using nails or screws. I’m going to use my 16 ga nails
Thanks, glad you liked it. Oh yeah, 16 gauge is plenty strong, I'd use 2 then instead of 3 per row since I used an 18 gauge. Good luck on yours!
My pantry door was removed. I got to install it back. Anyways this can be done without fancy tools? Thanks
Without power tools I'd imagine..a hammer and a box of 2 inch casing or finish nails would be the way to go. 6d gauge. You can use the method as shown
if the carpet is too high for the door to properly clear it what do you recommend me to do so it fits while still looking good?
I'd like to know the answer to this question too.
You'll need to trim the door. There is a 2x2 along the bottom of the door inside. Remove the door from the hinges and lay it down and cut a bit (1/2" or 3/4") off the bottom of the door with a circular saw. Then rehang the door. Hope that helps!

Are you better off using 16 gauge nails vs 18? If you have a solid door, will 16 gauge be enough or door I need to use screws?
You need screws.
great job homie. only thing is I would suggest using wood putty to fill the holes.
Thanks. Drywall spackle is plenty strong for this and actually sands smoother and matches better with less paint
how long does a job like this typically take? Could a handyman do it in a day or less?
For one door the basic install shouldn't take but an hour to remove and replace, them the trim can take an hour, after that it's just waiting for spackle, caulk, and paint to dry. Day is easy depending on your skill level.
So if I use screws then there is only 2 screws on hinge side??
You could use 1 just above or below each hinge if you want, just don't overtighten
Good job bro!
Thanks!

2" long for the door frame and outer nails in the trim, 1" for the inner nails in the trim into the door frame

Yeah, unfortunately sometimes there is just nothing you can do like that so you go to the best you can
You don’t need shims on hinge side if 2x4 is level. Your making this more complicated then it is.
If you're in an area when the ground is constantly shifting like here, you'll appreciate that. Sooner or later here I'll have to make a repair and that gives me some room to be able to remove the trim, cut the shims and slide the door tighter to the frame to bring it back into plumb in the future.
