I kept running into the same exact problem, until one day I accidently clicked a "higher key' version of a song I was trying to sing, without realizing it. I started singing along in my normal leveled voice. Then I realized it was a higher key karaoke. Was surprised that I could later keep doing that with other songs. Using higher key instrumentals to accompany your alto voice, you just have to listen to yourself and play along with your voice to match a good pitch etc :) Good luck and have fun!
This example is the opposite of what I just said in the last comment, but it works just the same: I can't quite hit all the notes in adele's normal key, and this instrumental is way too low. Anyway, I played around with my voice and instead of following exactly the "male/low" voice match of this instrumental, I just sang in a "female" voice that I would consider in between the "original adele key" and a "lowered karaoke key (not this male version)....... I know it's kind of confusing lol....... So let me put it this way as levels going from highest to lowest... 1.)adele key 2.) the key i sang it in because i played around with this instrumental 3.) the typical lowered key version everybody on youtube makes 4.) a male key matching up exactly with this instrumental
