    I own the LAIV Harmony DAC, before that i was using a SMSL VMV D2R ($999 USD). The difference is gigantic. It is like listening to a whole other system. The sound stage is enormous and the details oh the details are all there. It's as if someone moved the microphone a little closer to the artists, that's the best way to describe it. The other thing I hear is what I call a "SLAM", it's basically the ability to reproduce that initial louder "edge" when the guitar is plucked or when the drum is hit. I have a very highly resolving system, and I think that helps me notice the differences.

      I definitely didn't find the Harmony to lack energy, attack or slam either. It's got a little less than some other DACs, but it's not soft and smoothed over like many R2R designs (e.g. Ares II and, to a lesser extent, Pontus II)

    Thanks for your review, I always enjoy watching you and the insights you bring to these conversations, even though I'm probably never going to change my DAC set up now, for me its end game (Chord Hugo TT2 with M scaler).
    I always used to think over sampling was a free win, but more critical listening has left me understanding that poorer over-sampling has some costs , specifically in textural ability from upper bass to mid range and in terms of spatial stability of image. The greater sense of 'air' and width to the image in the higher registers is not a no cost item for many designs.
    In my own set up I used several streaming transports which offered over sampling and ended up not using it on any of them with the Hugo TT2. Its only when I finally got to listen to the M scaler that I heard all the benefits and noticed no draw backs.
    I'm sure that's going to be different for everyone, and highly dependent on the hardware, but I'd urge people to not ignore NOS modes, as for some systems and some ears, that's the best way to listen :)
    It does seem like this unit offers plenty to like for the money they are asking and I applaud their attention to detail in terms of design, I think this little unit will make a lot of people happy.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  5 месяцев назад +1

      I agree that simplistic upsampling as done by many systems isn't necessarily good although it's often better in R2R style DACs, I find (all subjective though).
      Thanks for letting me know you enjoy my videos!

    Hi! I too picked up a LAiV Harmony, and compared head to head with my Pontus DAC. I'M IMPRESSED. Slightly larger and clearer soundstage, warmer but still detailed presentation, and certainly MUCH easier to change (or VIEW!) settings with. The warmth works nicely with my Susvara, and doesn't muddy sound from my Burson Soloist GT. (I'M JEALOUS of your Voyager!) 😅 But in truth, I do not consider the Harmony a "giant-killer". Instead, I believe it to be one of the best options in the price segment it resides within. It's not going to outperform a Rockna, or higher-end DAC. But i can't think of a DAC I've heard below $4k that outdoes it clearly. Simply different flavors of similar levels of performance from the best, and you CERTAINLY can hear worse!

      Owning the Pontus, would you still purchase the LAiV? Or would you say it’s a minor improvement?
      I’m in a similar situation and wondering how much better can it be vs my Pontus 2.

    • @knorrissirronk8665
      @knorrissirronk8665 5 месяцев назад +5

      @@ranelime I do not regret my purchase. My Pontus is GREAT. It has been my benchmark for the last 3 or so years... But the differences are notable in use (Screen for one, no special combo-presses of buttons to change options - LAiV Harmony has MENUs! ...Also, it cannot be ignored that the I2S connection auto-configs itself rather than hoping that your components have the right jumper combinations to match your source.) And as for sound, while not "night and day" causing me to feel like I've been missing out with the Pontus, I hear better detail, and a more "liquid" quality to the audio signal giving a more analog sense to the music. BOTH are "laid-back DACs", so don't expect a sudden change to a livelier sense to your music. But the Harmony feels a bit deeper in bass, slightly wider soundstage, and more emphasis on the mid-range. The highs are similar... Different, but I'd not categorize either as "better". I'm not sure if the Harmony would be my clear preference over a Terminator Plus or better, but I like the sound that I'm getting from it after ~ 200 hours of continuous burn-in with a rotating playlist. Not SURE that it was needed, but I figured why not?

      @tychovanveldhuisen1809 Sadly, I have NO idea. (See my comment about the benefit of a SCREEN on the Harmony) I've never updated it, so I would assume "factory default". The comments about the sound changes after each update didn't sound like what I was after (I like the current characteristics) so I never felt the need to hook my Pontus up to a PC.

    Nice! I have always had a soft spot for an R2R DACs. At some point I would love to hear LAiV Harmony.
    But - I am completely in love with my Geshelli Labs Dayzee DAC! It is a fully balanced AKM 4499/4191 DAC - which is essentially a multibit chipset. And it has upgradable op-amps - I used the stock TI OPA1655 units for several months (and used a 12V 50W linear power supply), and it is the best DAC I have ever heard. Now, upgraded to the Sparkos SS2590 discrete op-amps, it better still!

    I recently sold my Yggdrasil MIB for a couple reasons unrelated to it's sound. I picked up one of these, but unfortunately I prefer the sound of the MIB. The Harmony just a bit too relaxed and thick in the bass for me.

      The TT2 is like a better version of the MIB, IMO. It is more resolving and more spacious with a similar tonal character. It's been a while since I had the TT2, but I still think it's the best option for the money once you factor in the headphone amp and preamp capabilities.

      @TOMASittha108 if you're looking for more note weight, maybe look at the Denafrips Pontus II. It's got a lovely weighty sound to it, but also good resolution and detail.
      Another option to consider is that the reason the Qutest sounds too thin is actually something else in your system being too bright or analytical. You could look at a speaker or amp swap to add the coloration there because the Qutest is actually a very honest sounding DAC and there can be benefits in not adding lots of colouration at the beginning of your source chain.

    Was looking forward to this review. Leaves me more intrigued than resolved in a decision between the Harmony and other dac's like the Yggdrasil. I go back to my position that dac's are more of a sideways move than an improvement. Seems it still comes down to your preferred flavor and tastes in looks and features. I have the RME ADI-2 PRO FS R BE (not the dac version) and the more I listen the more satisfied I am. Especially with all the features that it offers. Good review. Seems you like it yet are let down by all the hype that came before you got it in your hands.
    I like the Harmony's build quality and features and an upgrade path for future technology. I can agree with some that feel the gold accents seem blingy, yet if you look at Asian decor, it is rather toned down from a lot of the things they do as far as color and contrasts. I like it and feel it has just enough flash not to be overstated.
    I am left still looking for a new dac.
    I am fortunate to have several systems and can use several dacs. Still have 2 Schiit Gungnir and a Modius.
    Still looking at used Mola Mola Tambaqui.

      I can understand that. I REALLY like the Harmony, but it doesn't clearly stand above some of the excellent competition like the Yggy+ MIB and I suspect the Geshelli Labs Dayzee will have a horse in that race too. Then there's the Linear Tube Audio Aero DAC which is also wonderful for a little more money, but it's also limited on features if you're looking for more than a basic set of inputs and compatibility up to 192kHz.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Месяц назад

      I used it with my speaker setup too, but having spent lots of time reviewing gear with both, there's nothing that speakers show me that I can't glean from headphones. They obviously present the sound differently, but you can fully understand any product through headphones OR speakers if you've done enough comparisons and listening with the gear in question.

    ok maybe we have a problem here... how is possible you think this Harmony is so fantastic sounding dac and Hans Beekkhuysen think it is an nice-looking-average-sounding hardware (to be polite)?

      I think we're all different and expectations come into it too. I think there are slightly better sounding DACs available at a similar price (e.g. Yggy+) but not by a huge margin and the size, interface and features of the Harmony makes it a great option IMO. The use and interactions with a DAC are as important (or more) than the absolute sound quality in many cases (so long as the sound is very good)

      I'm not normally into gold, but the Harmony looks classy IMO. I share this because sometimes things look better in person than in images/videos. I don't find it particularly blingy when setup on a desk and really enjoy its aesthetic.

    I know there is a huge difference in sound comparing class D amp to class A amp. how much more of a sound do you get from a thousand dollar dac vs three sound dollar dacs

    • @juanchakra

      I own the LAIV Harmony DAC, before that i was using a SMSL VMV D2R ($999 USD). The difference is gigantic. It is like listening to a whole other system. The sound stage is enormous and the details oh the details are all there. It's as if someone moved the microphone a little closer to the artists, that's the best way to describe it. The other thing I hear is what I call a "SLAM", it's basically the ability to reproduce that initial louder "edge" when the guitar is plucked or when the drum is hit. I have a very highly resolving system, and I think that helps me notice the differences.

      I’ve had the Harmony a couple weeks and am coming from a Soncoz SGD1 and Chord Mojo 2. My experience is that the difference is night and day (as it should be) in terms of refinement, smoothness and soundstage. Details are also noticeably better but not something I’m as blown away by since chip/FPGA DACs are quite good in this regard.
