  • Paco Gorospe was a Filipino painter known by many as the "Picasso of the Phillipines.” His work is characterized by colorful, neo-Cubist forms of Filipino people, animals, and cityscapes. The artist cited the vibrant colors used in the folk art of native Filipino tribes like the Yakans, Bogobos, and Tausugs as an early inspiration. Born Francisco Gorospe Sy on July 10, 1939 in Manila, Phillipines, his work first gained exposure after being exhibited at the Washington State Fair in 1962. Subsequently, Gorospe’s work was chosen to represent the Phillipines at the 1964 New York World's Fair. In 1990, the artist’s work Sabungeros, which depicts a cockfighting scene, was selected by Phillipine Airlines as the cover for their franchise’s deck of playing cards. Gorospe died on September 22, 2002 in Manila, Phillipines.
