They are rating themselves off of who they're comparing themselves to. They don't want to put a high number and seem shallow or something. Next time just ask how they rate themselves don't show another person.
I actually liked the idea of "pass it along". If it's done right, and parameters are set like "okay this is the average, you are only basing off of looks and nothing else", it could be an interesting study
