Ash, you WILL e coming back to do the High Sierras, right? You don’t want to miss them if you can make it back! As an 80 year-old mountaineer, composer-pianist, now with a new aortic valve and medical “no limits” with a new chance to get back in the mountains, I can attest that you’ll be lovin’ the high majesty of the Sierras! Happy Birthday ! The trail is a different experience for everyone. Some people it's about the challenge of walking from Mexico to Canada for others it's more of a party, with some hiking between towns and everything in between. As long as you enjoyed it, that is all that matters.

When I finished the AT I very much realized that the whole journey was not about the end, it was about all the times in between. I am so glad that I took a bunch of zeros with my tramily and truly enjoyed the experiences with them. That’s the stuff that I will always remember, and I’m sure it’s the same for you. Happy birthday and thank you for sharing your journey with us!

Happy Birthday, Ash!! Thank you for bringing up the topic of Zeros, and I could not agree with you more. A huge part of long distance hiking is indeed the mental game, and everyone has a different way of playing. Some folks enjoy the solitude and spend as little time in town as possible, while others find the social aspects to be their primary motivator for continuing on. This topic, as well as a hundred others, are all a part of the "hike your own hike" philosophy. Kudos to you and your mates for staying true to themselves.

Hike your hike! I did the JMT in 2021 and HAD to be off trail by X date, so I was hiking at a faster pace than I would have preferred. My biggest regret is that I didn't get more zeros. More swimming in lakes. More enjoying the moments. More soaking my injuries in the High Sierra snow melt. It's perfectly fine for folks to haul ass through their hikes. And it's perfectly fine for folks to take their time. To the person who posted about finishing "on time", I ask, "why waste your energy judging others when you can spend more time focusing on what makes YOU happy?" Have loved watching your journey as I prepare for my 2024 PCT trek :)
