Excellent review, as always, Brian. The knife, however, lost me at "partially serrated" then pushed me away forever at "420 J2"... Love your videos, Bri. Watch every single one when it goes live. Thanks for doing what you do.
Anthony White I don't know. I did a little research on 420 J2 and I think it might be a good choice if it is heat treated properly. Of course, I'm certainly not a steel expert.
I love your videos. I always see what you think about a knife before I buy it. Especially fond of Schrades. I hear they have wonderful customer service and they back there products. Keep up the great work!
It always amazes me when a manufacturer can use a steel that has a bad reputation (420 steel) in cutlery, and heat treats it properly and brings out its full potential.
Jamie Hitt I agree. I can only assume it's on purpose. I know a lot of folks have commented about it. I'll have to do a follow up on this one after a while.
Hey Bryan long time watcher first time commenter I like the review I am just not sold on the serations I would prefer a fine edge blade but that's my opinion. Great review and happy new year
I think you might get a lot of comments saying that knife looks a lot like the Gerber LMF. Very similar. but it gives people on more of a budget to get like the one they want.
Hell yeah:) Just an blind person would not say Gerber LMF. But thats nothing wrong to copy a great success. For example..Smith and wesson Sigma copy that Glock 17, Glock sued smith and wesson for that. I hope not gerber will sue Scharade. They should be flattered instead. For those who not own a LMF and if this one is a little bit cheaper i guess you can not go wrong. Only time will tell if the knife will hold up for a little heavyer task than an normal knife. Even if you own an LMF or this they are not made to open cardoors with. Thank you for a cool video Brian. Before i go, how is your long time Bear Grylls knife testing going?
magnus andersson Thanks Magnus. The Bear Grylls knife is holding up fine. I'm not ready to do the follow up yet because I have had so many knives to test I haven't really been able to use it as much as I want to really check it out. But I've used it on a few camp outs and for random stuff and so far so good. I think you'll see more of it in upcoming videos because I'm going to try to use it as much as I can.
Good review...comprehensive testing and it slips out of hand with grace. Result: I LIKE IT! Thank you Bryan...Waiting for your follow up remarks on the SCHF-40
Greyman Zink Thanks. I know a lot of folks don't like serrations. For me, it depends on the intended purpose for the knife. I think they are appropriate on this one.
Just bought the 40 from your store. Hard choice between this and the 42 but I already have a mid sized bushcraft knife. I'm sure I'll get the 42 soon enough. And the bolo.
I have two knifes made out of 420j2 steel, both were okay at first then I started to notice that they would not take a edge, it I would not hold an edge in the steel chipped extremely easily, but the knife does look cool :)
Bryan, Nice review as always, Its funny how these knifes keep slipping out of your hand (nice bulls eye). Okay its been said many times this knife resembles a gerber knife. I think you should send this to Magnus to do a review. He loves serrations and gerber knifes. I would like to see his thoughts on this knife. I would even help with the cost of the shipping. Thanks for sharing....Steve
Decent looking knife Bryan. Great review, I'd be interested in seeing how the end cap holds up with a lot of use since it seems to be attached to the tang. I like the sheath & the different options it offers, seems to be something for everyone, those you carry on their belts & those who strap knives to their packs.
Hey Brian I was going to get an LMF 2 but I just seen this review, do we know a price or release date? Schrades site says over 100$ for the 40L I'm wondering if the 40 will be in a more reasonable budget price. That thing looks awesome but price wise the Gerber lmf has come down and I don't know if these compete in that category under 100$
Airik1111 I don't know what the price is but if you look at other Schrade prices on their website and compare the "street price", there's often a big difference. For example, the SCHF1 lists for $106 on Schrade's site and sells for $51 on Amazon. I think the LMF is somewhere around $70-$80 so we'll see where Schrade comes in. I would think they will be less because that's how they roll.
Yep that's the truth, Gerber does the same thing, they ask $120 for the lmf2 yet Walmart has it for $66. I can't wait for this to hit the stores cause that thing looks AWESOME, I love what they did with the sheath also. This is gonna be hard waiting because I really want to get the LMF but that new Schrade is wicked looking. Thanks for letting me know Bud.
hey bryan great video. i got a new knife for christmas and would like to see what you thought about it. its the Buck intrepid 626 XL. i know i already asked for you to do another video but i havent found many good quality videos on it. thanks.
Walrusasoarus I think it looks like a great knife. Made in the USA with Buck's forever warranty. We'll see about a review. It's somewhere around $75 and up so it would put a medium size dent in my review budget. Bottom line is whether you like it or not, since you already have it.
Just based on what I read and my experience with other Buck knives, I'd say it is a really nice thing to get for Christmas. Of course, if you REALLY want me to review it I'll be glad to take it off your hands ;-)
Hi survival on purpose, love the videos. What a great video a schrade schf40 v Gerber LMFII would make. Since they are both of the same design, it would be awesome to see which one comes out on top. Thanks again, keep up the great vids
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Damn, I just found out it was discontinued, do you know of any other knives that have 2 loops for leg straps? Preferably plain edge.
Say Heah Brian. Yeah, It's one of my Fav. Stables, My 5' Blaid's, I have the Ratmandu, my Rodent 5, my BK-2 , my Ranger Afghan and my Ranger T. F. I. I have other's. like my BK-25 and some German , Solingen Skinner's and Western Skinner's. But my Ranger Afghan in the 5160 and my Ranger T. F. I. I got when the Tempered them higher on the RC. but because they had chipping problem's, They lowered the RC. But being aware of this and using my hatchet's I don't have chip's in mine, but their both good cutter's, Yeah, Infact my Rnager Afghan is teamed with NY Ranger RD-9 and my Ranger T. F. I. with my Gen2 SO-53 one of my Fav. Chopper's.. What's there not to like about a Ratmabdu. I even have (2) in the INFI Steel. and my Rodent 5 is one of my Fav's when I go with a basic Trio, (a knife, hatchet, and say) when I add my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and my Wicked Tough Saw. Yeah a good 5" blade is a good size for a biginer and this Schrade SCHF 40 should be right for their pocket book a real nice looking knife.,,.
Nightwolf866 Schrade must not agree. We'll see how well it holds up. Based on all the comments about the steel, I'll have to do a follow up on this one for sure.
Duh ;-) Oh, "that" SCHF42. I actually just asked about that one. It looks nice. It's marked "Out Of Stock" so I don't know if they any in yet. If I can get one I'll definitely do a video quickly.
Wow, that really is pure LMF2 isn't it? Not that that is a bad thing. The LMF is a beast. And I bet the price will be right. You would be surprised what you can do with those serrations once you learn how to use them. Nothing will make better, faster feather sticks than Gerber serrations.
Michael Travis I have been taking a closer look at using serrations to make feathers and I think they work better for lefties. At least all the ones I've checked seem to be ground so that the grind is on the left side of the blade, That means you have to hold the blade at a steeper angle to get the serrations at the best angle to make really thin feathers. Someone like Magnus can keep the blade at a much shallower angle and carve with the serrations from the "unground" side, which seems a lot easier to me. I'm sure Magnus could use his Prodigy with either hand but I just don't seem to do as well as I would like. I guess I just need more practice.
I don't know, I'm right handed and I can make monstrous feather sticks with the Prodigy and the LMF2. I don't feel hindered in any way by having the serrations on the left bevel.
Once you get a feel for how to work those serrations you'll find that there is very little you can't do with them. I'll definitely be checking this knife out at the Shot Show.
You're going? I'm a little jealous. I don't know if I could have gotten a pass but I definitely don't have time in my schedule this year. I hope I can make it to the Gun and Knife Show if it's in Atlanta next June. It always comes at the same time I go to Boy Scout Camp. Have fun.
+Survival On Purpose that's unfortunate because the engineering principles behind the appearance of the knife and sheath are cosmetically nearly identical. I'd really like to see a comparison. I could be wrong, but I think this Schrade is a knockoff of the gerber lmf.
+mark clement They admitted this in Brian's new video of the 40LD Gerber let some of the copyrights run out so it's open territory now. I recommend watching the review by Fire&Steel they gave this blade a major work over. I really would like to buy one BUT I just don't think the J2 420 is as good as the Gerber 420hc when it comes to the serrations. BUT unlike the Gerber Schrade was cool enough to make the 40d straight edge and IMO it has a better grip design which the LMF has had many failures with. I am getting ready to buy a new knife soon and that's where I'm at....either the LMF2,Prodigy, Strongarm or the Schrade 40...I can't decide yet. If I had the money I'd just buy both and do my own testing;)
To me it seems like one of those "I don't really know what I am or supposed to do" knives. It's trying to be like the LMF II, which is another not-that-great knife.
Hi,LMF 2 yes,but it is The OldSchool looking:-) :-) I like that, price point will be important. But in UK will be expensive like everything else in UK:-) Cheers
Look really Like The LMF 2, not a bad knife. To bad it's not an original design but must retail lower then the LMF 2. If it is like it' cou ter part The pummel is not link to The blade and The Tang should run 3/4 of The handle. That Way electricity can't sock you if your hand Touch The pummel. An x-ray view would tell. Gerber as too version of there knife i am told one Made in china The other one Made in Oregon, USA. The second is intended for it's military Line, With lifetime waranty. Either Way, schrade as come up with a great product. Be carefull not to baton The handle it might break Like The LMF 2. A knife Like that is, as you said an combat survival multytool perpose knife. Made for escape and evasion of down military pilot. A segment of market Schrade might be looking to get in. Great review. Atb Louis
Bladed Misfit schrade should giveaway lube with each knife purchase. 420 J2 is on the bottom. Light to medium use tops. Too soft for great edge retention. Not suited for heavy duty use. People deserve better from Schrade. Rant over.
Great looking knife, tho i would have to use it to say it is for me. Serations are not a good choice for a survival knife that you need to do fine task carving with, to make traps and such, tho cutting rope they are good. So i would not call this the best of survival knives. Yes more of a tactical knife, tho good review.
Kullcraven Bushcraft I agree this is more of an all around tactical knife but I'm not sure we are on the same page about what makes a "survival" knife. I personally think serrations can be a benefit in a knife that you may call on to do a wide range of tasks, as opposed to just "wilderness" stuff. I think we tend to get focused on wilderness survival tasks and overlook the other possible situations we may be faced with where a knife could be an asset. Bottom line, there is probably no "perfect knife" for every situation or every person. It's great that we have so many choices.
Amaing revew love the chanel, the knife is mental, apsaloutley love it but unfortunateley in the uk we have laws against knives over 3 inches unless stored properly so i strugle to perchase them. I am considering geting the swiss soldier knife so can anyone tell me if it is good. :-) ps: I know the swiss soldier is just over 3 inches.
Survival On Purpose I guess you knew that was coming on the looks of this SCHF40. I believe the US company Schrade was sold in 2004 and now all production is made overseas, usually in their Chinese factory. *Not complaining* but this may be an explanation on why Schrade is copying/using famous designs from other companies. The Chinese love doing that.
Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors Federal? I met a a Dad from another Troop at my last Boy Scout trip who is with the FBI. He says it is way better than being an attorney ;-) At least for him.
Good point. Yeah, I took a look on Gerber's website at the Strongarm. It looks pretty good. I'm actually headed out west for a couple of weeks on a road trip with the family so maybe they'll be available on Amazon when I get back. Do you live near Vegas? I thought you said you were working at SHOT show? I'm looking for trip tips.
No. I'm in PA. Work sent me to Shot a Show. If you will be in the Vegas area check out Red Rock Canyon . It is amazing! If you want s little taste of the Rockies while your there look up a hiking trail called Mary Jane Falls. It's beautiful.
The knife is probably not bad, and I can say that because I got the Gerber LMF II. I noticed that now on a lot of Schrade knives, they copy designs or at least copy design ideas. And that is just poor. I would rather see some own designs but that is just too much effort I guess...there is no excuse for that really...
With the exception of this design being obviously similar to the LMF II, I haven't seen that at all. I will say that across the "knife world" there are a lot of similar designs, or at least different versions of the same style of knife. For instance, the "Kephart" design or a Sykes style fighting knife. Same with music? There are only so many chords.
Dean Lindz One thing is for sure, this knife review has really generated a lot of opinions. Some like it and some hate it. I'm going to wait and see how it does long term before I decide.
'Mornin, Bryan; Not a fan of serrations as stated in 1 of my earlier comments, so I'll pass on this review, Just have 2 B honest, friend. Thanks 4 the post, anyway. Happy Trails From The Maritimes In Canada ATB " T " " GOD BLESS "

This is an all around interesting knife
Dean O I agree. It's a big, solid knife.
When does it come out i cant find it anywhere
Nice video and nice knife ! Is it fulltang ? The 420J2 steel seems cheap and too soft. How is the edge retention in this Schf40 ?
I think it is a full tang. The retention is OK. It is designed to take some abuse so it is softer than some steels.
Are these out of production? I can only find the large version on eBay.
Nice knife and review.

I can't find this knife anywhere for sale where do I get one I went the the schrade website and online and cannot find it

Yep. Gerber let some of their patents expire and Schrade took the opportunity to create a similar style knife at a lower cost

Personely i have very good experiences with the prodigy.
But i want to get myself tge strongarm, cause i dont like serrations too much
Where could I get one?
ManMedia123456789 Here's a shameless link that supports this channel: survivalonpurpose.com/Schrade-SCHF40
what do you think about the 40d stright edge
I just got one to review. If is a beast.
brand new schrade lmf 2 ????
Well, not exactly...
To me it seems like one of those "I don't really know what I am or supposed to do" knives. It's trying to be like the LMF II, which is another not-that-great knife.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A lot of folks really like the LMF style knives. Nothing pleases everyone. Thanks for watching.
Can you remove the handle?
I was thinking of making my own out of paracord
I don't think so.
looks a beastie do they sell in uk
practical prepper I don't think it's for sale anywhere yet.
I like it very nice...............
Timothy White Thanks!
I am very curios about that.
It's interesting.
Hi,LMF 2 yes,but it is The OldSchool looking:-) :-) I like that, price point will be important. But in UK will be expensive like everything else in UK:-) Cheers
TheStoyanbahchevanov I bet it will be priced to sell.
Where can I buy this knife?
Anthony Cantrell I don't think it is available yet. I'll try to send out a message when I know it is.
Atb Louis
Lt Survival I sort of assumed it was an insulated pommel like the LMF but I don't know that for sure.
First off, not full tang, second off, cheap knock off of the LMF II which is a good knife. You did good as far as the video goes though.
Why oh why 420 J2? Between this and the gerber LMF it's an easy choice. I was cool with 8 cr, but not this.
Schrade tells me they are confident in their choice if steels for this particular knife.
Survival On Purpose Go research 420 J2
I always intend to think wilderness survival, now urban survival i can see serations as a plus, agreed.
I do the same thing. It's where I'm most comfortable. I think having this channel is helping me to consider other directions.
Amaing revew love the chanel, the knife is mental, apsaloutley love it but unfortunateley in the uk we have laws against knives over 3 inches unless stored properly so i strugle to perchase them. I am considering geting the swiss soldier knife so can anyone tell me if it is good. :-) ps: I know the swiss soldier is just over 3 inches.
alex harrison I am not familiar with that one.
ok, nice knife
Looks similar to the Gerber LMF2.
Skillmaster Yes it is. Schrade told me Gerber abandoned some patents related to the LMF2.
The knife would have been great in my opinion if it wasn't serrated. I like the sheath and the handle.
i have both..... i don't know why people hate serrations.... i like variety(rip and tear)
Do you / we know anything about the price point yet? It will be overpriced in Europe anyways :D
NjectRevenge Not a clue, but I bet it will be a decent price.
I just realized that I never answered your last question! Sorry about that. Law enforcement.
Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors Federal? I met a a Dad from another Troop at my last Boy Scout trip who is with the FBI. He says it is way better than being an attorney ;-) At least for him.
No. Municipal. What wouldn't be better than being an attorney? Lol!!
Are going to meet up with Wingman 115?
Bear Grills anyone. I was liking the new line up from Schrade until now.
tim kitzmann Berar Grylls? You think so? I don't see it. LMF, yes.
LMF Too, yes. Blade shape handle shape, but the pommel of the LMF.
I guess the BG and the LMF are sort of brothers anyway ;-)
Survival On Purpose Yessir. thanx for the vid!!
The blade looks like a team Gemini
Backwoods Badazz busse combat is awesome.
It's also a bear grylls knife copy
I don't see that
Looks like a close copy of the Gerber lmf
+josh smith that's what i thought but better steel.
* A knife like the one they want.
serrations...why...nooo
iscariot project Aww, live a little. Expand your horizons. Serrations are your friend ;-) Sometimes.
haha
Kinda reminds me of the Bear Grylls ultimate survival knife
Tristanwendt I can see that a little, but I have the BG knife and this one is a lot beefier.
It looks like the Gerber prodigy oO
Nightwolf866 It's a little bigger than the Prodigy.
they lost me at serrated edge
Different strokes...
Survival On Purpose very true but the 40D and 40LD look like my cup of tea
Sweet :) Blades Rule :D
Donald Pearce Thanks.
Sry schrade but this is basically the gerber lmf 2 almost all of the same things just a few tweaks
Luke Scott Yes it is very similar. Gerber abandoned some design patents on the LMF.
K
very nice U.S.A
It's cool
Nice knife, handles look like a wrinkled bedsheet
I guess they sort of do
survival on purpose water & food comes first or you won't have the energy to baton wood .
Indeed. But fire can purify water and cook food.
Gerber LMF take off and not done well
Dean Lindz One thing is for sure, this knife review has really generated a lot of opinions.
Happy Trails From The Maritimes In Canada ATB " T "

Honesty is the best policy.
Survival On Purpose Just what I was Taught
The first point of the Scout Law: "A Scout is Trustworthy"
Survival On Purpose Roger That, Brother !
lmf2 much
Just a little
Kind of a gerber lmf clone . Just better looking .
just my opinion Yeah, Gerber dropped some patents on the LMF design. I think it looks pretty good too.
I see nothING...looks like tree art to me or perhaps your drying it for use as a table. I wish I could get this knife now.
tom a I'm going to try to send out some notices or something when these new designs are available.
Copy of the LMF 2
MrBearcat08 Looks very similar.
Horrible selection of steel. No way to get a proper heat treatment on that.
seen the gerber strongarm?
No thanks! I would not even want the Gerber!
Lmf from China
7:05 fart
Actually it was bad audio but it does sound like too many beans for a second ;-)
Complete copy of bg ultimate survival knife, but much better.
mushroomman I actually think it's closer to the LMF.
Survival On Purpose now that I look at it, it does seem more like the lmf2, but the sharpening stone is very similar to the bg knife
