Evolution of SYLVESTER & TWEETY - 81 Years Explained | CARTOON EVOLUTION

- Cartoon Evolution #9
I take a look at the history and evolution of Sylvester the Cat and Tweety Bird, arguably, the most beloved Looney Tunes duo, placed in a straight-man-funny-man comedic formula, in a constant game of cat and mouse, providing a constant source of laughter since their first pairing in 1947, following individual prototype existence many years prior.
While Tweety remains one of the most underutilized star Looney Tunes, Sylvester is the fourth most used behind only Bugs, Porky and Daffy. Together they appeared in 42 classic shorts, while Sylvester appeared in an additional 60 of his own. Together they have won two Academy Awards and been nominated once more - while Sylvester has one additional win and nomination of his own - making him the most-Oscar winning Looney Tune ever!
I take a look at how the duo (with Granny) evolved alongside Warner Bros. other popular characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Speedy Gonzales and more, and how they co-existed and outshone characters from Disney and other studios, including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Tom & Jerry. I discuss how animators changed his look, appearance and personality over time.
Don't forget to play 'Spot the Big Chungus'!

1:13 "Sylvester is the most killed Looney Tunes character".
Wile E. Coyote: Am I a joke to you?
Yes. Yes he is.
(At least according to ACME, since he keeps failing) 😆
the one thing i like in roger rabbit is some of the characters have some of there 40s look like bugs daffy sylvester woody and tweety although he does his 40s appearance representing the prototype later his 50s look which i like it as okay with part 42 part 50 era
I heard there's gonna be a movie about how he had enough of that company he always buys from and finally does something about it and call's them out on how the items he acquires doesn't work as advertised that coyote always makes me laugh
Wile E is immortal.
woody was made in the 30s
Sylvester is the single most underrated and underappreciated character in animation. He's just so versatile, and he's so beautifully acted in all of his shorts. His moments of complete nervous breakdowns (like in Birds Anonymous) feel as natural to his character as any of the physical slapstick he's endured, and you can't help but feel for him in those moments. He's a truly phenomenal character.
And yet, it's always Tweety on the merchandise. Not that Tweety doesn't have his moments of greatness, it's just that Sylvester is definitely superior, and it wouldn't kill WB (or whoever) to make an effort to spotlight that wonderful cat - especially in this day and age of the viral cat video!
Emily Plunkett
My feelings exactly! BTW today (March 24th) is the 75th Anniversary of the official debut of Sylvester. While he may not be the best of the Looney Tunes characters, he’s still appropriately cunning and fun to watch on his own, even though he’s always the one who gets the shaft by Tweety and Speedy in the cartoons themselves. I’ve always liked his voice too, even though it’s basically Daffy’s voice not sped up and has a more pronounced lisp and less Jewish sounding with Daffy. Mel Blanc always did a phenomenal job with the characters he voiced and his Sylvester voice is no exception. I do wish he got more recognition myself.
Logan W. Sylvester’s voice was the most similar to his own so that may have helped haha. No disrespect though he was amazing and did so many different voices so well. As a child though Sylvester was my favourite looney tune and I had a fair bit of Merch of him. Never noticed Tweety being on so much more but you could be right.
Birds anonymous is one of my all time favs of Sly's along with his son which i wish they would make more of...i like that pair.
He is so cute and adorable.
Exactly!
I cannot believe that I was thinking about Tom Cat from Tom & Jerry when Sylvester had much more to love and adore
I can't be the only one who wants a Sylvester & Tweety + Tom & Jerry crossover

I would love to see that but its Gotta feature Wile e Coyote and Road Runner

No joke. As a kid I was 100% convinced Tweety was a girl.

Fun fact: the Red Cat in Gruesome twosome was one of the inspirations for Stimpy from Ren and Stimpy
I knew it.
When I saw Gruesome Twosome a few years ago I immediately thought that it shared resemblances with Stimpy, almost like Stimpy was that two cats' son, as in, the colors of one, the body of the other.
Happy happy joy joy!
It was also a inspiration for Oggy and the cockroaches

Ooh! I didn’t know that!
Its hard to believe Sylvester and Tweety could rival Tom and Jerry. So many varieties of gags, its still an instant classic!

Correction: Sylvester died 234 times.
Dave Lee Down Under NANI?!?!
Maybe Sylvester doesn't know how to count. Lol
TWO HUNDRED THIRTY FOUR?!?!?!?!??!?!??!?!?!?!???!!??!??!
I didn't realize that Sylvester was actually the fourth most used character. I always figured the top four were bugs Bunny, Daffy duck, Elmer fudd, and then porky pig
Actually, porky was created in 1935 and porky wasnt the first one to use "thats all first" bosco used it first 1 year before looney tunes began in 1930.
Ok?
Sylvester has been my favorite Looney Tunes character for years. This made me smile so much!
Same here
My cat is also crazy about birds when she looks throw the window at sparows and pigeons...Something says that the creators of Sylvester and Tweety also had such a pet that inspired them.
My cat makes this chattering noise whenever she sees birds. She hasn't caught one yet.
Melissa Cooper your cat must be Sylvester.
I dont think so. Tweety always wins and destroys him literally. The creator is not a cat fan
Homer Simpson: I was revolutionary as a parody of the sitcom dad
Sylvester: Hold my bird
Wow, Sylvester really is such a complex character for a classic silly toon!
Kitty kornered was such a great cartoon, Its a shame clampett didn't hang on longer and make his own sylvester and tweety cartoons
There are wonderful examples of pacing, minimalism, and implied violence in WB cartoons and a lot in T & S. Watching Sylvester build a pile of furniture to reach Tweety's cage, for example. Just the cat carrying pieces one by one through the frame without showing what he's building until the reveal of the tottering pile next to the cage. Tweety reacting to Sylvester's off-screen fate - as when he runs out of "piddies" as they go to market, stay home - and Sylvester falls to an unseen though not unheard fate, or the fifty lions and one puddy tat becoming just fifty lions. The ridiculous size difference between the two antagonists emphasizes Sylvester's incompetence and inability to subdue this tiny, apparently helpless bird.
_A Tale of Two Kitties_ is legendary. That one will always be my favorite Tweety short.
So excited for Sylvester and Tweety voicing evolution!!
So Tweety IS male! Finally, that question got answered. Thanks for clearing that up, Dave!
I knew that since I was 7

As a whole' Warner Brothers Cartoons were the ANTI- Disney! Sure their earliest stuff was Disney - esque , but when Tex Avery, Chuck Jones*, Bob Clampett, and later Bob McKimson,
and Frank "Tish-Tash" Taschlein (the real spelling of his last name, not the spelling he used)
took the reins, they really found their own identity.
*Sure Chuck Jones early stuff like the Sniffles Cartoons were Disney like, but he quickly "Caught On".
Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries and Quackbusters were my childhood.
I'm glad they gave Tweety his Yellow feathers and big Blue eyes. I always found it a little strange and uncanny seeing him basically naked make with pink skin and beady black eyes.
Pink tweety looks like he's been plucked. He looks better yellow..
Have you guys seen baby birds? Some start out being featherless.

Um that’s what some baby birds look like. They do start to grow downy feathers though.

Yeah kind of but more like tom
My favorite Sylvester and Tweety cartoon is Satan’s Waitin’. It’s just such a unique idea for the time and that closing gag of Sylvester and the would-be robbers on the escalator gets me every time.
It really is interesting to look at how versatile Sylvester could be. Much like Daffy, the way each director used him was noticeably different (Jones usually focused on the cowardly aspects, McKimson more on the domestic aspects), yet it also felt completely natural, probably because Sylvester isn’t usually the hero and therefore doesn’t feel restricted by having to uphold a reputation.
It sort of makes me wonder what would have happened had DePatie-Freleng relied more on Sylvester in the later cartoons instead of Daffy? While McKimson was used to using Daffy for all those years, he seemed to prefer the crazier version, which was a problem because in the DePatie-Freleng cartoons, he had to use the more narcissistic version. He seemed to overcompensate for it, making Daffy a full-on villain in those cartoons, but he might have been able to work around this by using Sylvester instead, especially since he already had directed some Sylvester-Speedy cartoons. It certainly wouldn’t have made a difference to the animation quality, but it would have felt more natural than the bland “Daffy-Speedy” offerings of the time.
I'm looking forward to "Looney Tunes Cartoons" in 2 months.
Some people also are "convinced" that Pussyfoot, the baby kitten is a "female" despite constantly being referred to as a "he" or "him" in the cartoons themselves.
Me, too! Although made for TV they will have a theatrical "look" about them. And best of all, they are being animated the "real" way, with ink and paint. Plus, judging from the pilot episode Dynamite Dance, Bugs is back to his mid '40's design. And Porky has his doe eyed look that he had when Clampett first took over.
I miss The Looney Tunes Show

Tweety is definitely my fave. Tale of Two Kitties is a classic and I love watching it.
BEBBEEEEET! BEBBEEEEEET!!!!! 😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂🤣🤣🤣
It feels weird seeing tweety as pink - I always thought he was some sort of canary bird
Luke Mileto He is. That was him as a baby. He hadn’t grown his feathers yet
When Tweety was first created he was originally drawn as a baby bird. That was why we saw him without feathers. However there were complaints about him being naked so the animators added the yellow feathers later.
Bob Clampett said that by making Tweety pink, he was making fun of a picture of himself as a baby. His mom kept this picture on her mantle. Bob hated it because he was naked!
Bob clampetts tweety was the best tweety he could actually defend himself like Jerry mouse and was more sadistic when it came to a threat and didn’t rely on granny or hector the bulldog

Love both Sylvester and Tweety!
Alll A-Bird, and Birds Anonymous are among my absolute favorites!
Friz Freleng"s pairing Sylvester and Speedy Gonzalez are hysterical, too!
Robert McKimson"s shorts with Sylvester Jr., are top notch, too!
Disney: were so innocent to be violent
WB: no one can stop the pain
Disney cartoons could still be pretty chaotic and violent, just not usually the ones starring Mickey. Shorts pitting Donald against the nephews or the chipmunks get pretty crazy at times.
Yeah but WB cartoon
Every short has more violence than Disney shorts
@@pantherman691 I know. Looney Tunes were in a league of their own, I'm just pointing out that Disney shorts were more than capable of having an edge to them too.
Disney isn’t totally innocent. Disney shorts, on occasion, focused more on psychological fuckery. Just look at the malicious shit Donald used to do. I don’t think that the WB were as bad. But they did do stuff like that too. But they were more focused on having the characters beat the shit out of each other.
Goofy"s How-To shorts involving sports walk a fine line. They can get hysterically wild an funny, but not as wild as a Tex Avery MGM short.
Rival studios like Warner Brothers, MGM, and Walter Lantz, were giving Disney serious competition, and Disney had to keep up.
Mickey Mouse was pushed back, because his personality didn't suit brash, broad, fast-paced comedy. Goofy, and especially Donald Duck, got the spotlight, because they could be used for that type of comedy.
Think it's funny that, despite always fighting and trying to eat him, the two are friends.

I'm glad that I've watched almost all of the older shorts showed in the video. I guess my favorite short would be a tie with Tweetie Pie, Scardy Cat, and Bad 'Ol Putty Tat. My favorite animation between the 40s-60s. But honestly, those 2000s webtoons are terrible. The animation looks so stiff. And despite Tweety's appearance, I never mistook him for a girl. But man, I loved watching Baby Looney Tunes as a kid. But I'm stoked for this Looney Tunes project coming out this year.

You've done it again Dave! This is one of my favourite evolutions to date!! Sylvester is such a versatile character actor and always made me laugh in different roles with different foils! I do love how scraggy, bushy tailed and paranoid Sylvester looks when he gets the Chuck Jones treatment and I also like his weird enormous eyes and the pointed facial ruff Jessica Borutski gave him on the Looney Tunes show. Oh and I'm TOTALLY HYPED for 'Tooned Out'!
Tweety's voice as Dave puts it, HAD to be sped up, because Mel had a rather deep voice, so Tweety,Speedy, Porky, Henery Hawk, and countless miniature characters were sped, but Tweety was sped up 10 times normal speed. I wonder how slow Mel had to talk to record it!

A couple of the early Sylvester look like Tom from Tom and Jerry
some trivia : in the mid '70s I went to France and they were nuts for Tweety & Sylvester over there ! They strung together some of the old classic cartoons and put it in theaters as a movie. There was also merchandising like comic books & figurines
Sylvester and Tweety are some of my favourite Looney Tunes characters. I find the 2 to be rather underrated. I find them to be just as if not more comedic as Tom and Jerry. I'd kill for them to make an entire spin-off series again about the 2 and their day to day antics. Maybe even have episodes where they reluctantly work together to fight something bigger than themselves
18:07 Is just a play-on-words of Gene Austin's 1927 song "Ain't She Sweet."
Yes, it is - but it's an obvious allusion to Tweety's gender, which the animators certainly had fun playing with by all accounts.
WOW! I for so long wanted to see the work on that Clampett Sylvester & Tweety film (ever since Jerry Beck mentioned it in his book), and didn't know how much of it was done, of if it still existed anywhere, and now we even get the title of it! Cool, and so interesting looking!
As that film was being worked on as Clampett left, Freleng was simultaneously working on a followup to Peck Up Your Troubles, and THIS was what he converted into "Tweetie Pie" when he got the rights to Tweety. That's why the story looks nothing like the Clampett version. It was entirely Freleng's own creation, and he only used Clampett's layouts for it. (It's easy to imagine the woodpecker in Tweety's role, minus the speaking lines, and he would have simply pecked the wooden furniture Sylvester had piled up, instead of having to saw it).
That's why there was the dispute between him and Selzer over using Tweety. Selzer wanted him to keep the woodpecker. Right before Freleng died, I saw an interview in a magazine he did where he explained this. Sorry I can't seem to find that anywhere now.
You also left out their 1972 appearance in "Daffy Duck and Porky Pig Meet the Groovie Goolies", though I wonder if that was intentional, since a lot of people hate the special. Freleng unit animator Virgil Ross was actually working at Filmation at the time, so the Freleng characters, including Sylvester and Tweety, actually looked just like they did in the golden age!
I also have to ask, where did you find this from? Just doing a search on it, I don't see anything, and even the cartoon fan/research sites aren't discussing it. I think it's a very significant find.
3:32 Looks like Tom from the first Tom and Jerry short but he has a black fur coat
Birds anonymous is my favorite. Possibly the greatest example of voice acting ever recorded
Isn't that the one where Sylvester tries to suck Tweety through a straw? so funny.

Correction, Tweety pie’s blue eyes actually appeared in “Birdy and the beast” first.
The blue eyes only appear in the title card for Birdy and the Beast, not in the episode itself. It’s likely the title card we know now was added in reissues, like many were - though it’s also possible, the title card was designed and added last minute after the blue eyes had been added to the design in the following short.
That's weird. From what I have seen from the cartoon(not all cause it's copyrighted and i don't have any of the dvds)tweety DOES have blue eyes.
Watched it on daily dailymotion (unrestored at that) and from what I can tell tweety had blue eyes the ENTERIE short (except when there was a smaller shot of him) .
I imagine Sylvester going in to Tom and Jerry’s world without Tweety

Really sad we never got to see the Clampett insanely violent version of Tweety and Sylvester. After the first three Freelings, the series got pretty formulaic.
I always loved how Tweety would suddenly have a weapon at hand like a hammer or giant hatpin ...and how in many of the Warner Bros cartoons like Foghorn Leghorn, Daffy, & Tweety, there always seemed to be dynamite close at hand to blow up their enemies. . hahaha

Sylvester and Tweety Bird Reminds me of Tom and Jerry.
The most recognized design today! My favorite appearance of Sylvester and Tweety was Tweety’s High Flying Adventure, and the episode Bad Ol Puddy Tat! Also the musical cartoon I Tawt I Taw A Puddy Tat! I think Sylvester and Tweety should have their own movie series!
I actually preferred Sylvester paired up with Porky rather than Tweety. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Chuck Jones has always been my favourite Looney Tunes animator. As for Tweety, I always enjoyed him best with the Granny episodes and I loved Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries when I was growing up.
I agree, I always enjoyed them more paired with other characters than with each other.
I agree 100%, especially about Chuck Jones. He's always been my favorite. Friz Freleng's stuff is great too, but Jones's cartoons always seemed to fit my sense of humor more.
@@JakeLovesSteak I am looking forward to a video on Wile E. and Roadrunner. Jones's best cartoons IMO.
@Fernando Yanmar Porky isn't brave in those shorts. He's just oblivious.
For real? Chuck Jones is my least favourite director even as a child I didn't dig his art style or animation that much there was just always something I didn't like about his style and especially the Jones-era Tom and Jerry was for sure off-putting to me
That's the problem with Looney Tunes, there's too many directors with different styles and takes on characters that there's no real definitive look or personality for them, people just got really accustomed to Jones' version the most for some reason meanwhile Tom and Jerry have had the same directors since their inception u can tell that it's Hanna-Barbera's style, by 1944 Tom had a solidified look to his design and only just evolved to become more developed from there, I'm not being a hater though bro, Jones is a great artist
The evolution of darkwing duck
He only ever appeared in one series, with a few small cameos - there wouldn’t be enough to form an entire video
They did! They did see me!!
I only came since i saw big chungus in the thumbnail
It was worth it
Omg I was just this morning wondering when you'd do these two!
That moment when you realized looney tunes predicted Tom and Jerry just 1 year
Sylvester- outsmarted by his would be prey
Bugs bunny-out smarts his would be enemies
I remember I had a video cassette where one of the shorts was a re-issue of A Tale of Two Kitties with Tweety updated to his yellow-feathered design.
I’m going to be honest, these are my favourite looney tunes duo!!
Love these so much. Great work as always.
Thank you!
The name story of Sylvester is pretty interesting.
that would be awesome a cross over between tom and jerry and sylvester and treety?im all for it man?
Terrific! On a side note, I believe Sylvester is the most punished cartoon character of all time.
It’s probably between Sylvester and Tom.
