In July 2021, a coroner ruled that Andrew Devine, who died 32 years later, after suffering severe and irreversible brain damage on the day, was the 97th victim: • The 97th Hillsborough ...
Everyone remembers what they were doing and where they were on hearing the dreadful news on this horrendous day. My younger sister was in Sheffield, home of the Hillsborough stadium, and with cousins of mine that lived there -- we knew some had tickets but were not one-hundred percent certain at the time as to whether they had taken my sister along to the match with them or not. The highly anticipated game was supposed to be an exciting Football Association (FA) cup, semi-final football between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, being played at a mutual ground.
As the events began to unfold on TV earlier in the afternoon, I remember my parents' immediate trigger of worry, comments of concern and general unease - as they tried their best not to worry me too much. This was back in the days of no mobile phones, the only immediate information was BBC1, waiting in anguish for the house telephone ring and to hear that my sister and other family members were safe.
As you will see from numerous videos, the regular Saturday afternoon sporting TV programme, Grandstand, on the BBC, was showing snooker and had to be interrupted soon after 15:06pm - the time the game was abandoned, as the deadly and catastrophic events had already started to unfold. Going to a football game for everyone would never be the same again. News of the disaster immediately began to break around the country and around the world.
This website unites all corners of the world in tribute and in expressing our hearts and sympathies to all those present, having survived the disaster, and to those 97 dearly departed - their memories live on, forever. You'll never walk alone.
