I interpret it as someone having feelings of sadness, grief, disappointment - then a glimmer of hope - but mixed with uncertainty. I'm teaching myself how to play it. I'm determined. Thank you for your lovely interpretation. 💗
You're beautifully capturing all the emotions in the music! I love the way you explain it. I really feel the regret and sadness in part A, just as you described. Part B feels like he's dreaming about his loved one-it's so dreamy and full of longing. And then in the final A part, he returns to reality again.

It's amazing how Chopin could speak/sing so clearly without using words. I just started playing piano (at age 43!!) and learning this piece, but I have been listening to it for decades. I have always loved the conclusion to section b - it makes so much sense now!! I think I would have switched majors to music if I had you as a teacher in college. I hope to be able to play with your passion some day. Thanks for the analysis.
@@gregniemczukI played the op 9 Nocturnes and the nr 3 was a spiritual intense experience. Remains my favourite ! Thank you for sharing your love of Chopin music !
I love your Chopin analysis videos. You really get to the heart of what Chopin was thinking when he wrote his masterpieces. I find the augmented chord in the final cadence interesting because about 15 years later Chopin would use a similar ending cadence in the slow movement of his Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor.
Greg, you’ve so much knowledge to impart, even for this work of the younger Chopin, I gain so much in enjoyment after listening to your lecture. I like the symbolism of the distance between Chopin and the one he loved.
I like that you mentioned John Field in this video. I've heard his Nocturne no. 1 in Eb and I was like "Well, I can clearly see where Chopin's Op. 9 no. 2 nocturne got it's inspiration from" cause it sounded very similar to the Chopin nocturne I knew and loved for many years.
Searching for the analysis of Nocturn No1, which I am learning now, I got so moved by your passionate explanation .. the composer’s personal hidden love story, which I had no idear at all and the way you made its story connected to this music are mind blowing! Especially the middle part - octave code comes together like a couple living far far away, then coming closer at the end on Chopin’s mind scene... OMG that was so so brilliant analysis!! I had my own imaginary musical scenay (very simple and a little bit vague) and your analysis was so much clear and artistic. Thanks a million!

I am confident that Chopin was very pleased. As an extra treat the artist took us took us on a musical journey. We have some of Chopin’s thoughts and variations on this particular piece.

I started learning this piece, because as a child I fell in love with the Nocturnes, and since I fell asleep to them every night, I know the main melody of Op9No1 really well. However, I could never feel the whole piece as one coherent unit, the same way I do with No2. Your video really helped bring a beautiful story to this piece, and will definitely help me in my playing. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and passion!

Would you say the ending has a sound of being incomplete, like the relationship with her, but the final note representing hope? As I listened to your playing of this Nocturne, this time with analysis in mind, the idea that kept coming to mind is that the most powerful note of a segment may be the softest one, opposite of so much of life that finds the loudest to be the most powerful. A tool Chopin was a master of by way of the Piano Forte.
Yes! There's definitely some hidden pain at the end and your explanation is so perfect! I love it. It really makes sense why Chopin put this strange note almost at the end of this piece. Thank you!

Thank you for this video, Greg. Your insight and interpretation is beautiful. I want to ask: do you have any advice for learning the polyrhythms that show up in the A section? They are giving me trouble. Thank you.
Good day. Thank you for your comment. Yes, I do! Divide this section to smaller parts (Max 4 notes in the left hand) and first master only these small parts, later put them together. Drop me a line to gnpiano@aol.com, and I'll send you a photo of my score so that you can see how I divided it. Best!
Not trying to nit-pick, but John Field was Irish. Field's music serves as a precursor to impressionism in my opinion. His music uniquely used modal keys, focused on pedal points, and contrasted his melody with ostonato that created a mood or image similar to impressionism.

Thank you!
I agree!

Thank you Greg again! I have been enjoying current Chopin Competirion a lot and a lot more because of your lecture! Though I have to confese that I have been spending less time for your video due to the competirion.
THANK YOU!!
Sure! You're forgiven 😀. The Chopin Competition is important! But you can always come back here!
@@gregniemczuk For sure I will!
@@gregniemczuk By the way, I have good friends, a couple, who teaches physics at a state university in neighrboring town. I don't know where you live, but they are from Warszawa. She is very good cook as well a good physicist.
@@hiroshitanimoto6234 I live in the South of Poland, so not so close from Warszawa.
Dziękuję bardzo!!
What an interesting video!
I always like to imagine what Chopin was thinking about at the time🤔
My thought was always that the sixths where of course the climax, and then the same melody but in PP and thirds with the pedal is the same thing but in the distance
Very good point
Cant wait for opus 48 number 1
Piekne brawa 🎉 Uwielbiam Chopina bedzie trudno go zagrac Bo sie ucze ale jego muzyka do mnie tak przemawia . Cos cudownego ta nokturna ❤
Dziękuję za komentarz! Serdecznie pozdrawiam i powodzenia!

@@agnieszkaolbert5192 ooo! Kiedyś na pewno! Byłem kiedyś na Curaçao i Jamajce (grałem tam nawet koncerty!!) Więc wiem o czym Pani mówi. Serdecznie pozdrawiam!
Greg, have you considered doing concerts of the Schubert song cycles and Schumann's Dichterliber? That would be an excellent project if you found a promising young Polish tenor or baritone, as I think those songs are a great entree to the performance of opera.
Thank you very much for your Video(s). It is so nice that you share your knowledge and skills. Many Thanks and all the best vor you! ♥ ♥ ♥ I love your playing!
Thank you for watching and for your kind words!!!
Best!
Excelent video!

Not trying to nit-pick, but John Field was Irish. Field's music serves as a precursor to impressionism in my opinion. His music uniquely used modal keys, focused on pedal points, and contrasted his melody with ostonato that created a mood or image similar to impressionism.
Thanks for this! My big unforgivable mistake!
@@gregniemczuk it's okay, you can simply add a RUclips caption through RUclips Creator Studio to correct the mistake, it's no big deal!
Please let me know if you didn't know how to do it.
you are Amazing!!!
Finally the nocturnes!!! 😍😍😍
Soo nice to have this video with me after a tiring study day!❤ I study Sociology and Political Science, in which the content sometimes can be too serious and frustating. Music is always the best friend to help me escape from reality. Goona buy the book Chopin and His Pupils. I also found another Chopin Study book by Alan Walker (I guess that's also a good option?) Wish you have a nice day!
Yes! Absolutely. Alan Walker is the best
You’re the best!
this helps so much! thank you! your channel is so underrated :((
Thank you! Don't worry, at least I have space to personally answer you 🙂
@@gregniemczuk aww you’re so nice
Thanks a lot for this very, very interesting lecture, Greg! I'm happy to see and hear you in five hours in the Wiener Konzerthaus.
Bravissimo, chapeau 💐💐💐💐💐💐
I was practicing this piece last night. The notes of right hand was complicated
Well done to pay homage to - and play - John Field 😃 whose music I love. I'm going to enjoy the 'Nocturne' series. I want to hear you play the F Minor Concerto too....!!!!
Thank you!!! I will make analysis of concerti next year!
@@gregniemczuk I'm delighted to see that some contestants in Jeune Chopin are playing Field Nocturnes - a bit of a surprise in an 'Institut...' competition. It's difficult to find details - do you know if it's compulsory in some classes? Do you play any of them yourself....?
You are brilliant, Greg! I love all your inspirational ideas and I always enjoy watching you deliberately express them with a lot of passion. I'm learning a lot from you.
Just one remark as I now verified with my nocturnes scores, all Chopin nocturnes end in major with the exception of the c minor nocturne op.48 no.1.. Now I feel like questioning: is there a hidden message from Chopin by choosing to end only this particular stunning nocturne in minor?
Again, bravissimo!
Hello! Just saw your comment. Not all end in Major! Also op.32 no.1 ends in minor. Yes, definitely it was deeply thought of and has some meaning. It usually means: "there is no hope"....
Beautiful interpretation and excelent class!
