And people looked at me like I was crazy when I said that it smelled like it was going to rain.
YES! I thought as a kid that I had a superpower or something...
Hmmm...
I'd say that, and people would go..."yeah, I smell it too"
Some people are much more sensitive to their environment than others.
SAME
I could just feel it coming
The smell of rain is actually my favorite smell! Thank you for explaining this!!!
true
same for me
I've told people before, many times, it smells like it's gonna rain and always got a look like I was crazy. Even just saying I like the smell of rain and some would laugh.
It's legit. I could tell too
I don't get why we don't appreciate our own sense of smell
I could smell it too
Ha haha... Haha.... I smell nothing... I usually always have to stand close to the food to smell it, never mention rain... So this would look like super power to me
Me too I can also tell that it's gonna rain
"Petricore" would make an awesome metal band name.
Cat S there’s a good song called Petrichor by a band called Invalids!
Yes.
@lol l Somebody's not a metal fan
Can I take that name?
more like a rock band
I really love the smell the rain & of course when it rains! Very chill & peaceful to hear & smell.
Am i the only one who loves the smell of rain?
Itz_ Sara nope I always open my window when it rains to smell it 😀🙏
Itz_ Sara No...
Itz_ Sara I LOVE IT SO MUCH
I love the smell of fresh rain.
There are literally rain-scented candles.
I appreciate your appreciation for bad puns.
THAT DOCTOR WHO REFERENCE
eva tronina was waiting for it the second I read the video's name xD
YES!!!!
so much love for the doctor who reference.
THANK YOU. I LOVE that smell, but living in Bakersfield, CA I don't get to smell it very often. :(
Ken Karnes u are kinda lucky because I live in England soooooo
Southern California want rain because of the drought.
I live close to bakersfield so I know the feeling
Ken Karnes in the Philippines it always rains ;-;
Enjoy it since it's rare
The smell of the rain.. ahhhh brings back strong memories of the past. Flailing arms, dancing in the rain, splashing in the mudpools and playing with friends while witnessing from not so far away, your house's chimney blowing up smoke, knowing mama is brewing porridge later when done bathing in the rain. 😭😭
So many nerdy references, I love it! Subscribing.
That DW reference absolutely made my day!
I'm Greek and I had no idea that "ozone" (όζον) meant to smell. I knew "osmi" (οσμή) ment smell (the noun) but this is something I hear for the first time.
Oh, and "Petros" (Πέτρος) is actually a name (Peter). The corresponding word of "stone" is "petra" (πέτρα). :D
TheCh0senOne1 This is from Ancient Greek, and is widely used because of the Romans' fascination with the Greeks.
I imagine that modern Greek has changed somewhat compared to Ancient Greek. Kind of like how English has evolved over the centuries.
Phil Lewis Somewhat? No, they've completely changed. Being able to speak Greek has nothing to do with being able to speak Ancient Greek. Yeah, the modern words we use come from ancient, but most of the times the meaning is different (evolved, as you said).
I am Greek and right now I'm watching a busy thunder storm, lightning strikes very close to my home.Western Pennsylvania is crackin.English is a mut language, mixed with Greek,Latin and others.
I have a lot of smell and tast memory. I can remember where i was, what i smelled how thing tasted, and every detail around it.
One of my favorite smells! THANKS for this quick and fun lesson. :)
Good video. Can you do one on the smell of winter?
I think this the only RUclips description of petrichor I've seen so far that actually gave a nod to Doctor Who
That Doctor Who reference killed me
doctor who?
RobotHorseAaron Doctor Who, that's who.
LMFAOOO the rain all over him and his glasses. I came to find lure info for moles, and I found SOOO much more actually!
Petrichor! Thank you. I had forgotten the word when it came up in conversation last week. You guys are the best.
I would say this channel is one of the best of youtube .
Really, another pleasantly surprising answer I never knew I wanted to know so badly. Thanks for the video.
i remember reading that the water molecules help the molecules we smell to bond to our receptors more easily, so we are essentially smelling everything much better than normal. i wonder if petrichor is what it was actually talking about but in a more layman's terms.
I still don't know what rain smells like. Like for real, it rains all the damn time in my country but it doesn't smell any different from when it doesn't rain.
I've lived in Las Vegas most of my life, where obviously, it doesn't rain much, 2 to 4 inches a year. when it does rain, it smells quite strong. perhaps it is due to the chemicals mentioned in the video building up over time. I lived in Portland, OR for a year, where it rains probably 50+ inches a year. I didn't notice the rain having an odor, at least not as strong as Vegas. this is purely anecdotal though. haha
Only if the soil is dry, and gets wet, that is when you smell it. So if your area is always raining, you will rarely smell it.
Well, I live in the city. Our petrichor smells like motor oil and grease.
For me oddly, I sense it with rain is coming soon with a "chilling" feeling in my sine and a odd sensation in my skin
A long time ago, I heard that the 'it smells like rain' (just before it rains) is due to the lower air pressure you get during storms allows gases in the soil to emerge. Kind of like when I used to skydive a lot, as we got up higher in the airplane a lot of jumpers would start to pass gas. We would blame it on the lower outside air pressure making the inside air pressure greater so our bodies tried to equalized the pressure and release some gas!
How did those gases smell like?
One of my favourite things, the smell of rain.
Rain always puts me In a good mood
People have always thought I was crazy when I’d say I could smell rain
I really liked this video. Maybe it will help people ask more: who, what, where, when, why, how much, etc. questions. I've "smelled rain a comin" all my life; never really thought about why. I think I may have fleetingly thought that maybe the metallic (and/or fishy) smell as coming from minerals in the air. Thanks for asking (and answering) the questions, and sharing! : )
That Doctor Who reference though!
that ozone smell, for the longest time i just thought that's what screen doors smell like when they're wet, but i guess it's actually ozone
Im glad someone is asking the right questions
TARDIS reference :D killed me :D
but i dont get the refference... could someone explain me? (I'm Doctor Who Fan but... i dont watch him in english soo yea... the show is named Pán Času (Time Lord) in our languae
well he said "petrichor, for the plant that's tired of WAITING", and Amy is known as "the girl who waited" :)
It's so cool how Joe Hanson got more soaked the longer the video went on 😂😂 idk who's idea it was but it made it more interesting for my ADHD brain
Petricor is my favorite smell¡!!
In the mojave desert we have a different smell caused by the creosote plant aka greasewood (Larrea tridentata). When it gets moist it releases chemicals.
Petrichor. For the man who wants to attract camels ...to his oasis.
Camel's milk is really rich, they say, so why not attract them to one's oasis?
We are part of nature as the rain, storm, winter etc. and all of these natures gift have a distinguished scent. I wish to capture these aromas in bottle so that I can use it when it's not raining
Oh my god that Doctor Who reference😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have a terrible allergy. At the time here (India) we have monsoon season. It's cloudy all day but rains shower at different times. My nose on the other starts to tickle like hell when it's about to rain. Guess I have a natural indicator.
Love the sneaky doctor who reference! XD
I get it. Nose knows! Whey sound the same!
Where does the smell of rain come from? My dogs Sammy and Pete sloshing indoors.

I don't recall rain having a smell. Then again I live in a desert where it only rains around December to February.
Joe, turn down your thermostat! You're burning up!
...oh and nice video.
Pronunciation of this word seems still up for grabs. I pronounce it like this guy does. Others say "pet-REEK-er."
People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them that the smell is called petrichor.

Glad I hung around till the end of the video!
Your videos are hit and miss but this one of the best.

the doctor who joke completely killed me I had some trouble to contain myself 😂😂😂😂😂👌
A long time ago, the ground on which I live was underwater--so when it rains, it smells "fishy".
Oh please, the P&P '05 rain scene was way more romantic than *notebook* **hissss**
That's why I always rub my feet with my hands and smell them after I walk in any dry soil/dust, it smells so good.
You mention "three chemical sources" and mention ozone, petrichor, and ???
John Dobyns geosmin
Geosmin
I can smell the rain on the road. So I take my fat ass face and stay on the road for 1 hour.
Great video! I have a friend who thought that petrichor is the actual smell we smell after it rains. This might disappoint him.
Mmmm, petrichor. I love that smell.
+1 for knowing the term before the video!
I love the smell of warm rain in the summer🤧
That Dr. Who pun though 😂
Funneh window is open and I'm smelling the rainy weather coming.

If you are in a region where it grows, such as Arizona you may also smell the Creosote Bush.
Anyone find a 'going to rain' perfume they like? Love that scent.
Wait, "magical medley of molecules"? indeed, Sir.
I smell rain to but most people don't believe me untill it rains
I call it vaporwave aesthetic scent
One of the best!
We fans of Doctor Who already knew the word "petrichor." That's what brought me here.
"You are the smell before rain, you are the blood in my veins." - Brand New.. I understand now o:
Nice show! i'm new to it but i always enjoy it!
another gr8 video
Doctor who reference? Subscribed!
I love the smell of rain. However, in the Philippines, old people will tell you to cover your nose, because it can make you sick.
SO COOL!!!
Scar tissue can also detect change in the weather, so now I'm thinking that penknife accident wasn't as bad as I thought.
Maybe the rock was trying to say, "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you."
It's okay to be smart
I love your intro!
Thanks Isabel Joy Bear.
Your nose knows 😂 the video didn’t even start yet!
Omg doctor who reference
You had me at Karen Gillan
NICE! 🌊🌊🌊🌊
My doubt is, If there is no thunder and lighting but the sky looks cloudy, wouldn't we have any chance to smell ozone?
