I owned one of these bad boys back in the day. A real powerhouse if you stayed on the pipe. I re-jetted mine to prevent bogging in tight spaces in the woods. Good times and thanks for bringing her back!
I always wanted one of these. Now that I'm older and somewhat wiser, I'm not so sure that I wouldn't run out of talent as soon as I twisted the throttle.
Lol for sure! I had an 85' CR500 20 years ago and it was wicked wicked fast bored, ported fmf pipe the powerband came on quick and wanted to hurt you lol

i liked my '85, the only weak spot was 3rd gear which grenaded twice, Paul Thede at race tech did the suspension with a "special" shock out of a showa box, best mod ever for that bike...my '87 cr 500 with PC pipe etc had the magical power band imo...
Nothing looks cooler than the Honda bikes from the 80s. I prefer the 3 wheelers, but the old crf looks sweet. Red white and blue.

Had a 85cr500 with fmf burley pipe ported motul 800 5th gear wheely no problem

Adam Miller of Miller racing hopped up these big bores, also get a hold of a maico 700 or a KTM 600 2stroke they are awesome dessert sleds as well. Still love my 96cr500 though
The reason the CRs turned so well.... Honda was smart enough to copy Maico's frame geometry and rake/ trail if I remembered correctly.
1986 cr500 is the bike to have ! Weren't de-tuned til after '87...
i owned a CR500 back in 1987.. awesome machine. i sold my 500 to get a newer 250cc so i could compete in my local moto-x club.. never forget the power of these things
i just read you can buy up to a 640 cc big bore kit for the cr 500 could ya imagine trying to hold that on the fckn ground let alone trying to hold on to it it would be bad ass though. i don't know why they don't put skid plates on a exposed frame there cheap easy to install n lite

Looks just like mine. :) Absolutely insane bikes. Was way too much for me. I am interested to see what you get for it. I am currently refreshing an 85 CR250 that looked to be in much the same condition as that 500.

Always wanted to ride a cr 500 only ever seen one in person. Rode yz 490s and rm 465s

I don't care how good of a rider you are if you are not a bit nervous getting on and a little shaky when you get off you are lying know for a fact keep sending those old 500s good and bad memories of them D.h
That was my bike when I was 17 . I don't know why I thought I needed a cr500 at 17 but I bought one . Im surprised that I lived through it . I could rip up any hill straight line faster than any other bike . But it was too much bike for me at the age of 17. I was faster on the track on a 125 or 250 . But not in the desert grab a hand full of throttle point it straight and let her rip . slow in the super technical sections for me . You have to be a better rider to ride a 2 stroke 500 . 4 strokes are more forgiving and require less skills to ride fast .Now I have the 2018 KTM 500 excf its faster than the cr500 and handles better .
A KTM 300 is also faster than a CR500, it's called Technology mate 👍

Ive got an '88 & a '96, but if I were looking for another CR500, it would be the '86. Stupid power, disk brake in the rear, and the incredible (for the time) forks..
Now I'm definitely no expert but wasn't 87 the first year they introduced a rear disc brake on the cr500? As I've seen a few 86s with a drum

52/53 hp at the wheel is no more than the average 450, So I hardly see how and why it would blow a modern bike out of the water, as you say... Brakes and suspension are no match for a modern bike. Don't get me wrong, I love these powerfull vintage bikes. I owned a CR500 back in the days and now have an older CRF450 (2005) among others. To be fair, the CRF is way better in every respect, and it already is a 14 years old bike. In short, this CR is a fantastic bike and it does not have to be as good as a modern bike to be desirable. Just my point of view. I love your channel.

85 cr 500 had yellow sidepael and no. Plate I did the same to mine .Almost thought it was my old bike .
Nothing hits as violently as an 85 CR 500. Mean and nasty ! Wear all your gear and get ready to hold on !

Sr. Why are you not putting skid plates on the frame? Cheap and easy way to protect the frame.

Random question but doing a long rod conversion on an 85/86, do you need longer studs for the bottom end, do you back out the stock studs a few turns, or shave material off the cylinder to account for the added 5mm of height when using a spacer?
I have a question? Where does he find all the CR500R? I never see that many out there. Hard to find bikes!

Had this new in 1985 raced in NY and English town Expert class.
Loved this bike. Was faster on 250 though.
Had the Kx 500 to violent not smooth like Honda.
