I love your truthful and real reactions. NO one is gonna like everything. That's what reaction videos should be about, YOUR opinion.
I personally am a huge fan of their music and was heartbroken when it "ended". I would like to recommend and ask for a reaction from the band Pixies... Huge influence on Nirvana as well as so many other groups. They were well known and did well in Europe, but more of a little-known underground music here in the states. It's time you give Frank Black aka Black Francis a listen. This is the punkish vibe behind Nirvana. Please and thank you! Pixies~Gouge Away. ruclips.net/video/FiUNDeuBbi8/видео.html

This was my favourite song from the album, I think it's pure genius and wish they released it as radio-friendly single lol. When they play this live the whole place lights up. I can see where he was heading with this song and how he ended up with "You Know Your Right." The atmosphere in this song is so powerful.

One of the reasons I am a fan of Nirvana is their punk elements. I am a punk rocker and a headbanging heavy metal lover. Chaos and disorder with a little anarchy are punk themes. You do not have to like anything, be honest for sure, just be respectful of what your viewers feel about the bands and songs is all I am saying. Peace!

For sure. As a youth I was very much a Nirvana enjoyer but when Cobain died and the whole "post-grunge" thing started I was like, man, where can I get that energy again? Then I got super into punk rock.

It's the best song on the album for me, it grows on you until it hits you smack, bang in the face. If this song was released today it would still be seen as ahead of it's time. Even as I listen today, it still sounds like the future of rock because Kurt was painting his vision into sound.

I think Grohl shines here. I also think he often MADE more mellow songs like Come As You Are. Both the drumming and the background vocals, which he did much more than people realize.

When you said you was going to be brutally honest I thought you was going to give it a low score but you gave it a good score haha, I can't really complain. I think a 7.0 is a pretty good score from you based on your tastes and the type of rock you typically like. I absolutely love this song and the vibe it gives off. Nirvana is definitely a "vibe" band. Each one of their albums has their own feel.
It's a bit of a shame you don't factor lyrics at all. Seems like it will limit your enjoyment of certain bands. Some bands lyrics are very important to the enjoyment of the band. But hey, your tastes are your tastes.

The song is a masterpiece but it takes a while to hit you. That's why a song should never be judged after one listen. To me this is one of the most perfect songs ever recorded, it's pure genius and gets better with each listen. It still sounds like the future of rock today.

Cool reaction. You're probably qualified to grade the singing. Kurt always said "music first, lyrics second". His mumbling incoherentness was him striving for pitch and tone more so than legitimate thoughts and words. Also he claimed he sang this in a British accent so he sounded more punk (I dont hear it myself).

  • @Huppyhuppyhuppy

I love the chaos of this song. Contrary to you I wanted the end noise to last forever, but this is the sound I grew up with, specially In Utero, the sounds that mark our youth tend to change our musical “DNA”, more than music we absorve in any other age (there was actually a scientific study on this released this week). Therefore I am biased towards this chaos.
That being said I found your analysis great again, for most other reaction channels each song is a “life changer”, this one is honest and technical as well, which is great to learn something new from songs we know already

"Punk is musical freedom. It's saying, doing, and playing what you want. In Webster's terms, 'nirvana' means freedom from pain, suffering, and the external world, and that's pretty close to my definition of punk rock." - Kurt Cobain.
"Looking back on the production of 'Nevermind,' I'm embarrassed by it now.' It's closer to a Motley Crue record than it is a punk rock record." - Kurt Cobain
"I don't blame the average seventeen-year-old punk-rock kid for calling me a sellout. I understand that. And maybe when they grow up a little bit, they'll realize there's more things to life than living out your rock & roll identity so righteously." - Kurt Cobain

The thing about this song is the time signature. It's in 4/4 but the ear has a tendency to put the highest note as the 1, but really the A before that is the 1. It's a very off kiltered riff with serious syncopation. It takes a few listens to learn HOW to listen to it. Once I figured that out I loved the song 1000 percent more than my first listens. A good way to learn how is the bridge. From the bridge onwards just count the beats:1,2,3,4. You will follow the song as it's intended to be heard

Nirvana is one of my top 10 ALL TIME favorite bands ever period BUT... Hey David is being KIND IMO on his scoring BECAUSE Nirvana NEVER TRIED to claim to be anything other than they WERE, A PUNK BAND with their own flavor and their music was RARELY anything to write home about musically, it was simple YET catchy and good (For most punk bands).
OFTEN Kurt played MAJORLY out of tune on stage and didn't care, it was the shows reaction that mattered, that YOU were having a BLAST at the show and they GAVE that, NOT a musical masterpiece BUT a stage presence master piece. Pull your head out of your ass and ACCEPT Nirvana as they were, and not add more credit to where none is needed. Kurt WOULD agree!

Definitely part of it. I think a lot of it had to do with timing in all honesty. People were tired of the late 80's hair band stuff, and when they released "Smells Like Teen Spirit" it was like a rallying cry. Join our ranks, let's wipe out the hairspray and spandex, and get back to a raw sounding musical direction....which is exactly what the rock world needed at the time. In the music industry, timing is literally everything.

One of the greatest songs I've ever heard and best live performances. If this song was released today, it would still be seen as the future of rock. It's a storm throughout the whole song save the one chorus which is used as a solo the only place the song finds peace. Sums up Kurt 100%. This is probably my favourite Nirvana song, and I wish they released it as a single as it would have blown up the radio. Amazing song, a whirlwind from start to finish and makes you want to get up and jump all over the place. Best punk song in the history of punk a pure genius lightening in a bottle moment.
This was the direction I hoped Kurt was taken and he nailed it. This is how chaotic vision would sound if it had volume and "You Know You're Right plus Radio Friendly" was where he was heading with his music. It's an artist trying to give sound to the vision he had in his mind, it's almost impossible to do but he got very close with this song. The distortion paints a 1000 pictures in my mind when I'm listening to it, the song is next level like a crazy right on a wild horse and in the end he bucks you off into the river.

Honestly Kurt would probably appreciate you not liking everything he does. Songs like this are a rejection of the expectation that they should be a popular, commercial-friendly band that caters to everyone. They never wanted to be huge, they didn't want to define a new genre. If anything what they _wanted_ to be was a Riot Grrrl band, but that's an argument for another day.
