Wow! Young Mahler was merely 16 when he wrote this. What a marvel of a score - such large gestures. Very indicative of his natural talent in writing for the orchestra - something discovered after a proper performance of his 1st symphony.
Completely agreed. This quartet has a symphonic scope, and the type of structural drama often seen in symphonies. It's a wonderful juxtaposition with the small chamber ensemble.
Back before there was pop music to distort the way classical music creators approached writing, there were probably lots of 16 year olds that could write like this, as this was likely what city folk thought music was! Kind of the equivalent of 16 year old pop stars these days. The piano part looks a bit weird, like it's unnecessarily hard for what is being said. But really nice orchestration and beautiful composition.
At 1:06, little did he know that in some twenty-eight years or so, that downward theme from the violin became part of the monument known as Symphony no.6.
For anyone else wondering from where in symphony 6, it’s one of the first figures in the movement 1 theme, just in A minor, about 16 seconds into this recording: ruclips.net/video/oep5Rude4mQ/видео.htmlsi=mVopFb9ZUBsok7y6 Even if it wasn’t intentional, still very cool

@Lukas Weidinger the meeting in the doctor's house/the flashback to the concentration camp. It's the music the doctor has playing on the record player.
Around 4:20 at measure 114, the violinist plays a C natural on the second C. I am wondering if Mahler intended a C# or C natural. There is a C# for the pianist right hand but my gut tells me C natural, as the violinist plays it in the recording. What do you think?

If you think this is impressive, look at Das Klagende Lied
Honestly, after learning this, I can tell the piano part was written by a 16 year old.

@@dylankirchner1777Never learned this but the score looks pretty far from pianistic 😂
Thank you Mahler, for making the piano part as uncomfortable as possible. And thank you lord, for at least giving me decent hand size.
I feel your pain
I will take this comment back, after I've now started on the second movement finished by Schnittke, god give my strength
meet rachmaninoff! lol

Pretty far fetched

From measure 79 to 92 the cellist was ahead one measure. That was throwing me off. Great youthful piece though by Mahler. Group sounds great too
yeah, and it made it sound a bit atonal
@@charlesenglander1392 why ? it's an octave apart.
@@glemoine14 Yes, it is if played correctly, but as Maestro prodigy said, the cellist was ahead, listen to @3:09, it is a bit atonal for a bit

Didn't realize Mahler had written a piano quartet...love it 👏👏👏
8:58 is the most beautiful thing ever
Wow...film Shutter Island..
This is probably my favorite small ensemble piece ever written. So haunting and beautiful at the same time.
A simple ensemble piece but with a grand sound. Only Mahler.
Thanks for posting this. I've been looking for it.
Impressive. I really enjoyed listening to this. So refreshing!
Great early piece, "of its time", but there are hints of future harmonic language of the masterpieces.
Beautiful sadness
Smart choice of bowings.
Amo essa peça!
Excelente pieza musical
So he composed this wonderfull music at age 16?.

Good to know he was very young when wrote this.
Work of youth. I suppose he came a long way!
This is the piece used in shutter island
which scene?
@Lukas Weidinger the meeting in the doctor's house/the flashback to the concentration camp. It's the music the doctor has playing on the record player.
I watched shutter Island because I've known it was there, but I liked it not so much
Unfinished, yet better than many finished quartets.
Masterpiece 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️🎶🎵🎶🎵
Thank you very much!

😍 yeeea damit best part
Thank you.
Early, precious piece.
Currently playing this and my group calls it Mahler's Pubescent Angst...it's the most beautiful angst I've ever heard, though!
Alfred Schnittke based the second movement of his Symphony No. 5 on this quartet. Give it a try...if you dare...
The first 6 measures of this almost sounds like the beginning of a Philip Glass piano piece.
3:22 is a good moment
Verklärte Nacht of Schönberg few decades before.
If you hadn’t said so, I would’ve never guessed it to be Mahler.

C natural, it makes sense.
This is the only Mahler's piece that contains a piano part!
Didn’t he write a lot of songs for vocal and piano?
@@elliottherring5021 You're right, this piano quartet, a handful of these songs and... Nothing else. In fact is a particular case en history of music
