The maximum sacrifices and martyrdom by Sikh for Sikhism was done by the Jat caste and this is an irrefutable fact.
This episode made me tear up. What a group of heroes. They stood their ground and fought their best, even if they must have felt overwhelmed. And that commander...what an honest and total badass. While I personally don't think it's wrong to have retreated in this situation, or that I would understand if they had defected considering how the British fort had abandoned them to their fate, what they did was truly honorable. Their sacrifice is more than worth remembering.
Edit: Also, the comments section raises some interesting questions. Yes, they were fighting for the British, but does that make their stance in the face of thousands of opponents any less valiant? I do not think so. No matter how well trained you are, the size of your group *does* matter - it is why we sing ode to great leaders of armed forces that were outnumbered and yet still won.
I believe this is another example of human individualism. Anyone can be perceived as "good" or "bad" if you look at them from *one point of view* or another. Regardless, they stood strong in the face of certain death, and that is what makes this an act of heroism.
This video is not talking about who was "good" and who was "bad", or who was on the "right" side of history and who was on the "wrong" side. Those things are debatable. What isn't debatable is the very real sacrifice these soldiers made in overwhelming circumstances. And that, is what this video covers. Like another commenter said, honour, courage and bravery are universal.

These Sikhs didn't die for a foreign overlord. When the tribesmen get through the pass whose homes would they burn? Whose wives and families would they kill or violate? The native Punjabis, including these Sikhs. They may have been part of the army but they were also fighting for their own people.
All 21 of them were from firozepur district, east Punjab which is now in India and there is a memorial to commemorate their sacrifice in ferozpur cantt.

These soldiers didn't fight for British imperialism or some ideal. Their commander ordered them to stand and this is a man they have tremendous loyal to and trust. The commander took the oath of service to heart and the men under him fought for each other and for the rest of the British army men they knew would fall were it not for their sacrifice.
This is something that soldiers understand and citizens so often cannot grasp. Sikhs have a long tradition of warrior spirit. It's not brown people killing each other for a white man in a suit. It's brotherhood and loyalty.

Everyone is completely missing the point of this. This is not about glorifying the British empire and its geopolitics or demonizing the pashtuns involved, this is about the soldier's dedication to their duty. I realize that it is hard for us to digest this as we like our wars to be in the good vs evil format but for the Sikh it was not like that. These men were not citizen soldiers, for them war was (and still is) a way of life, these men did not fight for a cause they fought because they were professionals and took pride in what they did. These men chose death before dishonor. They swore oath of allegiance and stuck by it till the very end. They fought and died the old fashioned way, you have to respect that.

No matter what you might think of the reasons behind the fight or the origins of this conflict, you have to respect these men who willingly took such a suicidal stand because they felt it was their duty, and their russian counterparts who kept fighting despite such demoralizing circumstances (not sure if it was an attempt to become independent or something else but it was impressive nontheless). Too bad this fervor couldn't be used for something better then death though.

Then you should read more on sikh history. And you will get to know its common for Sikh warriors to be lions in battlefield but at same time filled with love for other humans. Sikhs would always fight the person equipped equal to them. And if enemy asks to be spared then sikhs would always spare them. Sikhs were always very brave and disciplined and spiritually apt. This was one of the reason British recruited more Sikh in British India than people of other parts of india

That last part of the battle must have been quite scary for the tribes men. I mean they are literally burning alive a guy who just killed 20 of their own single handedly, and all he does is laughing his ass-off at it.

Personally, I think the most metal part is that Gurmukh Singh, the signalman, asks for permission to take up his rifle and-despite knowing he’s all alone- goes through the trouble of packing away his equipment. That’s discipline.

@@saahiliyer11 it’s instinctual. When you’ve been drilled and drilled and drilled into doing certain things, you do them even when the wolves are clawing at the walls. It’s what keeps artillerymen firing while hot metal death rains around them.
My granddad fought besides Sikhs in WWI and told us he was proud to have stood shoulder to shoulder with them in battle. My uncle RAF in WWII held them in equal regard as well.

Just dropping this fact here: 8 Indian men served in the RAF as pilots in the Fighter Command during WW2. Two of them survived the war, and at least one of the two survived until, say, 2010 or so. He or they might even still be alive today.

At the time the highest medal that native soldiers could be awarded.
Only in 1911 did Indian soldiers who fullfilled the requirements, become eligible to be awarded the Victoria Cross.
The Brits didn't deserve such brave men as the Sikhs. Same for the Gurkhas, who the Brits cheated them of their army benefits after they retired.

These where men with rifles and where where trained in battles against the other tribes. ( The fighters where from only 1 tribe the Pashtun) and the the Pashtun themselves claim only 180 died.
Athalwolf implying centuries of tribal warfare didn't leave the Afghani's with skilled troops. They aren't defenseless, they are dangerous adversaries on the field.
This isnt the first time sikhs have done something like this, they generally tend to be really badass, history is full of examples.

There is only one religion competed with them that is GURKHA. They r also a famous warrior group that give thought challenge to shik. But both of them r in indian army. For that reason indian army is one of the strongest army in the world.......

My aim here was to point out the other side of that as well, which is that no empire in history, be it the Roman, the Mongol or the British, is solely the work of the people who get to name it. They are often the ones we write about when we write history but that overlooks the contribution and sacrifice (willing or unwilling) of so many, whose efforts are essential to these vast entities.

History is never "Good vs Evil", is about how humans interact with world around them.

I now begin to understand why one of my grandfathers spoke with admiration when talking about the Sikh and Gurkha soldiers in WWII. He told me that "we wouldn't have had India were it not for them" (he was a different generation and mad keen on colonialism). Listening to this film, he was probably right. To people questioning why Sikhs would do this for the British empire its because Sikhs historically have been a very martial people, the religion is centered around defending the defenceless and being a soldier for humanity. The video also does not mention the fact that these forts were there to keep British India safe from invading afghans (they were boarder forts) this was not a charge into Afghanistan or an invasion into Afghanistan it was 21 men defending their countries boarder.
Also because the Sikhs had gotten some very, very rough treatment at the hands of Islamic rulers over the generations, and this was remembered. If there's one group that would rally behind the British flag, it was the Sikhs.
Yet, during the freedom struggle against the British, these same Sikhs were the hammers the colonialists used to suppress dissent. I'm not putting down their sacrifice, but you have to think of the context of the times.
The Sikhs were aligned with the Brits, they sold out the Indians.
They didnt "sell" anyone out. They joined forces with a friendly force that didn't try to massacre them.
Ford Prefect the Sikhs aligned themselves with the English because the British empire had used other Indians against the Sikhs during the second Anglo Sikh war, this is the war that cost the Sikhs there empire. Once the dust had settled the Sikhs had become loyal soldiers for the English, and being loyal soldiers they swiftly put down the Indian rebellion. I understand some groups of other Indians aren't fond of the Sikhs because of this but the British did treat certain groups of Indians better than others which in turn created resentment. Regardless historically Sikhs have been excellent warriors and in my opinion the Sikhs diaspora around the world has flourished remarkably. Btw I am English so I may be a little biased in my views but I do understand the British empire had not treated other Indians well which I think is a shame given the intellectual merit of most Indians.
