Watching this a second time, impatiently waiting for our water to come down and warm up a bit. Poling has changed my river tripping forever👍

Once you become a member of the Holy Church of the setting pole, your mission is to convert. Poling changed my life!

Barb, it’s always good to hear from you, we had some fun poling clinics eh. You taught me things I still use. ❤️

I did my first up/down river poling trip yesterday. I was as accustomed to standing in my canoe while fishing, so it didn’t take too long to get the basics down. Full body workout upstream and easy, relaxing trip down. Awesome for skinny water too!

Lisa, I appreciate your channel and all you do for the canoeing community. I wanted to ask you, "how long is your pole?" I would be poling in Northern Ontario on the pre-cambrian shield. I have used tamarack and spruce on the fly, and I also have access to a lot of ash with all the dead trees around here in Michigan with the emerald ash borer. I really want to make a nice one to use and care for.

My pole is 12 feet long. I primarily use 1 ash pole for any rapid above a class II+ and a black spruce pole for anything up to a class II+. Both are double ended. Thanks for watching and commenting. It makes us a true canoeing community.

Only 35 seconds into the video and I’ve got coffee coming out of my nose! 🤣
Is poling something you don’t normally do with a fully loaded canoe? It appeared to me that the canoes in your poling videos were empty.
Poling isn’t something I ever learned because 95% of my canoe trips were on big flat water in the Adirondacks

Alan, poling is something that is BEST done with a fully loaded boat. All around the globe you will see boats overloaded with goods and one person in the back is not paddling , but poling.

Were those young paddlers Canadian by any chance? Black flies are out here in downeast Maine, and that means the trout are active in the small streams and a good setting pole is most assuredly needed.

They are ..and have done some tremendous trips in places I could only hope to go, and I’d LOVE to teach them to pole.

Hi Lisa - how long is the canoe in the video? I'm generally in 15' or 16' boats.

I believe he is running a Discovery 169 which is called 169 because it’s 16 feet 9 inches.

Poling has GOT to become much more mainstream. It's far and away too good of a technique to ignore....

I wholeheartedly agree. I know as Maine Guides our gear isn’t light, but we also don’t portage nearly as much as I see those young canoeists.
