Once I walked by a complete stranger, and he tipped his hat and bowed his head slightly to me. I could have melted right there into a puddle of glitter. That simple gesture made me feel like an absolute princess. And we didn’t say a word to each other. I smiled at him and we continued our separate ways.

I onced opened the door for an elderly couple, at a restaurant.. & as they were walking outside, i tipped my baseball cap at them & the elderly man couldn’t believe what i had just done. He said “I thought I would of died not seeing someone ever tipped their hat at me anymore. Sir.. you have just made my night, God bless”
I paused for a sec & didn’t thought a gesture like that would ever have an impact on someone… from that point on, I tip my hat at elderly ppl & just see their sight of admiration & disbelief that someone still does this..

A funeral hearse and two cars full of family drove down our busy high St last year. Nobody acknowledged it.
As it passed me, I stopped and took off my hat, watching it pass. Then I noticed a man about my age (60) on the other side of the road, doing the same. We nodded to each other and putting our caps on carried on our ways. Society is circling the drain. It costs nothing. Years ago, in a family car following my father's coffin, I remember seeing a man doing it as we passed. It meant so much to me. It is something i have practiced ever since.

My mom has a very touching memory of a gentleman taking off his hat and bowing his head as they drove by in her grandfather's funeral procession. This was the 40s, when she was little.
My mom taught us to do this and I taught my children to do it. It’s funny running into your comment because I honestly thought no one did this anymore. I am happy to hear you do this.
Exactly. I remember watching adults doing this as a car passed, a silent sign of respect. All of us kids stopped playing and waited until the cars passed. We also joined the honking when a car with "just married" made it way honking down the streets of our town. We celebrated each other's joys and were kind in sad moments.

I was at the gas station here in New England putting my seatbelt on, and randomly saw a handsome man getting into his car. We made eye contact and i smiled at him and he tipped his hat down with a gentle smile. Men can still nod gently as a sign of respect to women.

These types of gestures were never even worldwide trends, but we should ascribe some morality to them, for what purpose? So we can brandish torches after those not aware of hat tipping 'morality' and who would be immoral then? Just someone looking for no good reason to think they can judge someone else is all I'm getting, morality has nothing whatsoever to do with it. Yes! I had an experience like this, an older man tipped his hat to me and held the door open for me and my two daughters. It’s hard to convey the way it makes you feel when you experience unconditional respect and care from a stranger. It’s something you remember for life. It’s the way they were raised, and unfortunately it’s not seen very often in this generation.
Oh to find a gentleman who opens the door for his lady, pulls out her chair at the dinning table, stands when she enters the room, escorts her by his left arm so his strong right arm protects her from any danger coming at them , thank you God for a great man (grandfather) who did all these acts of love to my grandma to their dying days. This is a misconception. Men in western times thru the 20s (rural areas), would tip their hats to other men as a sign of respect. This was a derived offshoot from medieval times when knights raised the face guards to other knights to show their intentions to be friendly as opposed to hostile. That is the origin of our military's salute.
Men of old west era would do a half bow from the waist when showing deference to a woman as a display of being genteel in the presence of the fairer sex. The woman would curtsey in response.
By the 30s, society became more fast paced (rat race), and men abbreviated the bow to a head nod or a touch to the hat brim. This lasted until the 60s when men started abandoning brim hats and suits as everyday wear.
History also has shown a tendancy to categorize certain words as feminine or masculine that used to be unisex. It's perfectly fine to call a man beautiful and a woman handsome. Men used to wear purses to hold the oversized paper money of the 1800s. With the invention of the wallet and smaller bills, those became obsolete, but women still use them daily.
Hats are still worn by men today but 90% are caps. Women rarely wear hats and large ornate hats have almost completely disappeared much like corsets, wire bustles, oversized bows, frills, parasols, etc. Convienience is king and caps for men are just another piece of apparel that almost never get removed outside of a courtroom or church...although military personnel still remove their cover in any indoor structure.

And people wear less hats in general. The population is majority moderate to high-density urban with indoors activity and automobiles with controlled environments; a lot of the historical incentivizes to wear hats are far less pressing for much of the population today, and with that, a lifestyle where a hat is unnecessary is an indicator of socio-economic status. Obviously, some still wear hats sometimes-they are generally far less culturally significant and can carry undesirable connotations today, though.

I still remember each time a male stranger has said excuse me, given up his seat on public transportation for me, politely opened doors etc. These acts do not go unnoticed. And if you feel the women around you criticize you then change the company you keep or move to a more encouraging location. Compassion and chivalry is not dead ❤

My dear Dad was a WWII army infantryman under Patton. He was always a gentleman. He'd tip his hat when passing by any lady. And, he'd remove his hat if there was a lady in the elevator. My dear Mom, a homemaker, did nothing to discourage Dad's good manners. Their love was pure and secure lasting more than 50 years of marriage and surviving four of us kids.
I always tip my hat to a lady and if I’m introducing myself or greeting… I always remove my hat. I won’t walk into someone home without removing my hat and always take it off before I eat at the table. My sons do the same whether it’s a hat or cap.

I’m a woman and don’t know why other women do this. Thank you on their behalf. There are kind women out there. How women carried themselves in society, many decades back, is the kind of respect they got, it's as though that almost came natural for men to tilt their hats, so different in this era, the way i saw my mum treat dad was really special, they had so much respect n love between themselves, what a time that was, they still do, even in their older age.
As a child growing up seeing that, there's no way that didn't rub onto me, always adored mum for that, the way she carried herself, family was always first for her, in whatever she had to do, wow 🤗☺️

@@jdguy23 it’s nice but very hard work and it’s not like a 9-5 it’s 24/7 365 days a year cause cows can escape or get hurt it’s a super long list but if you love that then it’s worth it being up at 5 am everyday in the field seeing the sun starting to illuminate the mountains then the steam on the field starting once the sun pops over the mountains. There’s nothing like that in the world when you see it
Just a tidbit of advice if you ever are still interested in trying to work on a farm stop by a local farmer or one nearby and see if you could help work the livestock or gardens! 99.99% of farmers would be thrilled to have you come help because they’re so desperate and they’d be thrilled to see this new generation seeing a few still keeping farming alive!

It doesn't even matter how much more we can afford to pay either, we just can't find folks that are willing to work this hard anymore. The kids coming out of A&M are more interested in corporate farm management positions, than true Ag. There'll be no one to pass farming onto at this rate, no options but to sell off our farms to shell companies based in Saudia Arabia.
I've heard those stories about different farms just taking the loss, and offering their yield to the locals to harvest themselves, just because they couldn't hire enough hands when the time came. I can't fathom losing a whole season's income, but it's not hard to see how it happens to some like that. Not to get political, but I sure wish my govenor would quit loading those folks we'd love to hire onto buses and carting them off to other states, if you know what I mean. I don't think they understand how hard up we are for anyone willing to work. I started baking for the moms of the boys in the local 4H, just hoping for a competitive edge in the potential labor market!

I still tip my hat or bow my head to ladies, but I'm 63 and was brought up with manners, I also ask to get things off shelves for ladies in grocery stores, hold doors etc. Unfortunately, I more and more get strange looks and even insulted for doing so. So sadly, I don't do it as often as I used to, but then there don't seem to be as many ladies as there used to be either.

Quite literally, from the first scene with her in the bar in Cairo when she first met Spencer, when I had no idea who she was or if she was even going to be an ongoing character, I was simply stunned and memorized!!
The show had just started and I was at my brother's house, as he had Paramount, and I remember trying to him and said "OMG! I don't know who that girl was, but would you rewind that, because she was awesome!"
I didn't know if she and her friends were all passing characters, but she just glowed, she radiates an energy and just STOLE the scene and from than in I just couldn't stop watching the show.

I'm as lefty as they come, as are my friends. Not a single one of us would be offended. I grew up and still live in NYC. Those same women and I have taken many trips down south and out west. We met more than a few cowboys who acted with "old school" manners, and we loved every second of it. I doubt we're the only "city girls" who enjoy chivalry.

I was probably the last generation to be taught this, and still tip my hat to ladies from time to time, especially older ladies. Many of the youngsters do not understand when you don't bother with good manners everyone pays dearly. We had so many movies in the 1970s about what happens when society breaks down - we called them disaster movies. Films like "The Poseidon Adventure" or "Towering Inferno" were stuffed full of great moral stories about what happens when society (represented by the ship, or the building etc) breaks down.
