Yeah, here in South Dakota growing is a bit challenging, spring is non existent, long hot summers to heat stress plants and then like 4-5 months of snow and ice. Proper growing season doesn’t start till May, but sometimes June due to freak snow.

My daughter and I were laughing throughout your video. We grew strawberries in Barcelona. They jumped out of the pots into all of their neighbors' pots and took them over, grew monstrously large fruit and took no heed to anything we tried to do. We cut the runners, picked the fruit and gave them water. They were super aggressive, yet very delicious. Well, we saved seed from those fruit and grew them where we live now in Mexico. They have followed the same behavior here, taking over all the pots, reproducing like crazy and making huge fruit.

Years ago I'd read about someone who simply allowed their strawberry plants to 'march' across his garden. He encouraged the runners to go in one direction and every year tilled up a section of plants on the other side tilling up about 1/3 of the bed each time. That way he tilled up the 3-yr old plants every year.

"You can't give them too much sun" Truer words have never been spoken! Where I live, we have midnight sun during the summer season, (so theoretically they can get sun 24h/day in summer) and locally grown strawberries (if the season isn't too wet or too dry) are extremely much better than any strawberries from the south!
Question, the runners that you get, do you transplant them immediately or do you store them as runners/rhizome over winter (or for two years until your current crop ages?) like bulbs?
Also, how would you do this if you were to grow them in containers? (I live in an apartment with no garden spot but I'd love to have 4-5 strawberry plants)

I bought my strawberry bare root plants from Jungs also. They are the french variety (Marie Des Bois??). I grew them first year in longish box planters because we were selling our house and I did not want to lose a year in the garden. At the end of the summer/fall when we sold the house I moved the plants off to a new bed then mulched them with straw and hoped for the best. We are zone 4. They look awesome and so healthy. I am so excited about harvesting them this year and clipping runners to keep the crop going. Good tips as always 😉

Another great informative video! Unfortunately, I covered my strawberry bed for the winter with straw. Something I never did before but reading up on them suggested I do so.
My bed plants were two years old and I say unfortunately because with the extremely mild winter when I uncovered them around the first part of April they were all dead! Some runners that sprang up around the outside edges of the bed are growing and flowering. I'm going to let them grow a little longer and try to transplant them back in the bed. If it doesn't work I'll start the bed from scratch next year.

People who live in the same area will know more about what grows best in your climate. RUclipsrs I've watched also say to just try things out & see what works best for you, since each garden is different & different gardeners can get varying results--even when they do live nearby.

Johnny's Selected Seeds is less than 10 minutes away. I bought a sale bundle of three varieties and they have given me lots of good berries. I highly recommend Johnny's.

luke, do you have to plant the dormant strawberries right away after getting them in the mail? or are they forgiving in terms of when you plant them?

At my parents house I have started strawberries, several varieties, in pots. They love it, and on the ground near those containers we have wild strawberries volunteering. They don't taste much, but it makes a beautiful groundcover.

what products (fertilizers or herbicides) do you use on your lawn? I would love to have great grass near my beds and also plan to plant some fruit trees, but want to avoid contaminating the soli and our food.

would a kiddy pool have enough depth for the growing roots...I think it's about 7-8 inches deep and maybe 5 or 6 feet wide...was given 3 and want to plant something inside them

When you say the “first year” not to let them fruit, do you mean the first year that you are in possession of them or he actually first year of the plant? In other words, since the bare roots are typically 2 years old should you go ahead and let them fruit? Sorry… I just discovered your channel and you’ve got great info. Thanks!

Great video! I've just started planting out some strawberry plants, and they are starting to grow runners. Do you wait until those runners have a decent root system before cutting them away from the mother plant and moving them to a different location? Thanks in advance!

    • @kimberlyy911
      @kimberlyy911 7 лет назад +2

Lucriseth first year strawberry plant runners should be cut off asap so that the mother plant can grow deep roots and the 2nd year can have full fruits. I made the mistake of not removing runners the first year and some mother plants are weak.

It’s common practice to take off all blooms the first year unless you’ve found second year roots. I couldn’t find any growers that specified what year the roots were.

Hi MIGardener! This has been incredibly informative -- thank you for sharing.
I was hoping for some more advice?
I live in a condo. and was very successful in growing a strawberry plant (without fruit) this summer (year 1) from seeds on my balcony. I used to get over 12 hours of sun a day, and the summer was very warm. Living in Canada, the weather started getting very cold 2 weeks ago, so I brought the large rectangular pots indoors, and over the past two weeks (much more suddenly in the past 3-4 days), I've started to notice the leaves wilting and parts of it simply dying (browning/drying).
How can I 'diagnose' what I'm doing wrong? I was very hopeful to keep them going through the winter to get fruits next year, but looks like I won't make it through September/October...
Thanks to you, or anyone else who may respond.
