I was born and raised here.. and unfortunately still here. It's a shame was this town has come to. I think back on the Macon Mall and what it used to be and it's sad to see what it is now.
@@kagnewcobra5228 I'm originally from Macon and it has been on the decline since at least the early 1970s. There are areas that were upper middle class then, but today are just another ghetto. The local economy and drugs are contributing factors. Businesses leave one location for a better one and leave entire shopping centers vacant. One of the biggest issues the city has is local government leaders who would rather put community funding in their pockets than into the community. The area filmed here is a good example. The same officials have ownes this are for decades. They get reelected because of division and fear mongering. It seems as though they do have a good mayor at this point (Dec 2022). Hopefully he will help matters.
The mall was pretty nice. I worked at the old Home Depot commuting from Atlanta back in 2005 I think. I recently went back a few weeks ago for the HBCU football classic game. Alot has changed, didn't realize the mall is shut down. I used to help build Habitat homes there, can't imagine how those areas look now.

I'm from the area. My sister still lives there. The biggest complaint has been the lack of jobs. It started when Brown & Williamson closed in the early 2000's and went downhill from there.
Exactly. I have always said, the only way for you to lose the neighborhoods, is to move away and give it up to others who wont treat it well. Time we kept our roots down and pushed back. Its happening to my street. The older people are leaving and selling. The newer ones who are of a more "disrespectful" nature come in and take no effort to know anyone. Just this year we have had 2 cases of vandalism to our property and this NEVER happened before it started changing around my area.
I’m from NY, but when I was looking into buying my first home, I found good deal in Macon. The houses were in bad shape, but some of them had land, which I love. I work from home so I can pretty much move anywhere. The only reason why I didn’t was because I worry about the schools for my kids. I still believe that these towns are an amazing opportunity for young people, without kids, who complain they can’t afford a home. You can get a home there, open a small business, and gentrify the area.
That’s exactly what I plan to do, honestly I have three small children and I am willing to take that step and be apart of reviving this beautiful city, god willing..
If I was from New York City and made decent money, I would stay in New York or near the area. I’ve traveled around in America and most of America is boring and depressed. If I did have to move and had the money, the West Coast is good but only if you have money
I grew up here. My grandparents, dad, aunt, uncle, and cousins all lived right beside each other. We used to walk down the street after dinner every night, play outside, and it was a safe place to me. After my dad and grandparents passed away and everyone else moved nobody even went in to maintain the houses because it's not safe to do so anymore. It's heartbreaking. Such a beautiful area that never should have ended up this way.

Why yes, but you know what they say about hindsight.. There are worse places to be fair. If you look at surrounding states, each has a piedmont city that has had rapid growth and development over the last few decades. Macon however has driven business out. This has left a large poverty level population, thus increasing crime, homelessness, property degradation, lowering education, and all the other little trivialities that create one immense platter of total dereliction. As an outsider, what truly captivates me are the local ideologies. They seem to not notice which is quite strange with Atlanta being so close. After our home closing two real estate agents, an attorney, along with ourselves were speaking. A business was mentioned and each of their eyes leaped wide, "I would never go on that side of town. I mean as a kid it was great, but now! Absolutely not!!" This mentality is not productive.
Born and raised in Macon but haven’t lived in Georgia for 9 years. When I was a kid our neighborhood was full of stable households. Everyone went to church, respected their neighbors, and kept their property clean. Me and the other neighborhood kids would roam around the streets, light firecrackers, and wander in the woods til dark. I’m only 25 so that wasn’t so long ago. When I visit my family there it’s sad to see that my childhood neighborhood is full of neglected and overgrown houses rented out with 10+ people cramming into 3 or 4 bedrooms. I'm from Abbeville Georgia about 80 miles south of Macon. I remember spending all day Saturday at the Macon Mall. I have a lot of good memories at the Macon Mall. It's sad to see how that part of Macon has gone down hill the last 20 years
I love Macon! This is so sad to see. I bought a house here for my Med school son and am looking for another property. I think it is only a matter of time for a, "turn around" too many wonderful folks live here and I heard the Mayor is amazing and has big plans. Just like any City you need good leadership. Think about Atlanta and how much the Mayor impacts that City. Shirley Franklin (miss her and if she is reading this ;0) I think you should run again) was the best. Strong, good leadership can turn this wonderful City around.
I mean the thing is though it may be like that near the downtown area, but there are some other areas where there are newer businesses & places opening.
Talking about the abandoned homes and rough areas but no one is doing anything these areas. Macon does not have a lot of thriving business with pay worthy enough for these people to live a “regular lifestyle. Let’s improve the school system. Provide grants/ help for ppl to rebuild some of these areas? Some area are filled with nothing but older people who owns their homes but is not capable of renovating or improving their homes.. other city look at this as opportunities to improve and rebuild community. Macon govt just does not care to do anything about these areas…
I am looking to buy a house in GA and Macon came up on my search. I saw the amount of homes selling there and I had to come see why so many people are selling and why so cheap. After a couple of videos I am starting to see why. It’s sad honestly because I am already pre-approved and was very excited about Macon.
Damn this is sad. I was born and raised here. Pleasant Hill, 4th Ave. i moved away when I was 24 to Atlanta. Sad to see my hometown on the decline like this.
I find your videos fascinating and eye-opening. I’m a recent sub and I’m binge-watching and loving it. I’m so glad I found your channel. Keep up the great work!
I live here. There's plenty of people who love it here and want to see it come back to life and best of luck to them, I hope they succeed. But as for me? This isn't the place I'm meant to be. I keep trying to find things to love and for one reason or another it gets ruined.
There's cool places to visit but I sure wouldn't want to live there. It's odd how you can go from one nice road with nice homes to abandoned homes everywhere the next block over. Downtown is cool but you also have to keep your eyes open and moving especially at night.
Thankfully not all of Macon looks like this. Certain areas are not cared for, the city spends money in the areas that don't need it as much to keep up appearances in said areas.
I live in macon, yes it can be better, but what you are showing is in every town, city, state. I live in west macon and I really don't see this type of housing. I'm sure it's in places where people have moved on and no one wants to fix it. For the most part crimes are every where, whether you live east, west, north or south.
Its mostly in the Peach Orchard, Houston Avenue, Guy Paine Road, Bloomfield, East Macon across the river by Ocmulgee, areas of Pio Nono. I will not go to those areas at night for any money.
Exactly. He rode through every project in Macon. There is a lot of blight in poorer areas. Glad he highlighted the blight but this isn't representative of the majority of the town.
Moved here more than 10 years ago and the roads need care. They built up the bars Downtown but refuse to pay living wages. There are no jobs here now and everything has gone up in price!
People usually move out of Macon because crime got really bad they eduction has a score of 1-3 out of 10 is hard for investors to even buy here because people who don’t want to get rob don’t move in here. I blame the education system
It's not we gave more people from all state moving to macon,Ga tell me a state or county is al that and I will do your home town research and how good 👍 Everything 👍
This seems to have been constructed as a lower income community which are generally never meant to last very long. The people grow older and can not afford improvements or maintenance on a pension while many of the younger ones move where they find employment. It eventually gets to the point where the land becomes more valuable without the ramshackled housing so local governments focus elcewhere. 😢 It's sad but everything and everyone of us has it's time to wear out and become something else. Thanks for the video!
I liked your feedback that's very true we really understand things and people get old , it also reminds us of our time on earth is limited . Once those neighborhoods were alive with families and now for some memories.
You made an interesting statement: it seems to be constructed as a lower income community which are generally never meant to last very long. Can you elaborate on that? M really intrigued by your statement. I often wondered about impoverished neighborhoods.
No.....I live near Chattanooga. When you build a building Chattanooga makes you pour the curb and sidewalk in front of your building then they supposedly maintain it. They stated recently that they have over 200 million in needed school maintenance.....sound like these cities keep up with maintenance?
Born & raised in NY, But my Mother was born there in the mid 50's. My Grandparents moved from there in the early 60's, But most of my Maternal family is still there. They're one of the biggest families in Macon. Whenever i meet someone down there, I have to make sure they're not related to me.
Yea it's sad indeed what it is becoming and how the businesses are all leaving the city. When I visit from Colorado it seems more and more deserted in certain parts
You went down roads that I’m scared to turn on haha. Macon got a big dose of drugs and section 8 in the late 80s. The decent folks fled and moved to north Bibb, Jones county or Houston county.
Typical rural Georgia housing problems. People who own the properties do not keep them up. Renters pay high rent for garbage housing. The cities condemn the housing, and run renters out--forcing them to pay even higher rents. This is all over rural Georgia---just one city of very many . How do we fix this ??? We must make more renters home owners, and help re-hab neglected properties.
Your rolling Fort Hill one of the highest crime zones in town. This is east side, West and South not quite as bad but the old mall is all but abandoned and it's bleeding that side of town now. The north side has the money and new mall trying to get the more wealthy neighboring county residents money.
Come to Rutledge Ga. You will witness prime farm land being destroyed along with acres of woodlands with beautiful natural springs and creeks. Part of the water system we use. Two thousand acres so far. Now here comes the other auxillary companies wanting in. There's a meeting coming up to rezone property all around, from farm/ residential to heavy industrial. So sad! I'm on the main highway, where they left some properties as a buffer zone. Rivian has broken ground, and construction is full force. Electric vehicles, they want another huge industry, and can't keep the one they already have producing. Not one word from any environmentalist came forward to stop it, and keep it natural. People around here tried, raised money, got some lawyers, didn't do any good. Since it's right behind my home, I don't want to stay, the traffic, noise, and it will run 24-7, so we will be lit up like an airport. Time to be looking, and getting out of here.
I know someone who let their arents home fall to pieces just like this after they died and he has more than enough money to have kept it up. The son hated his mother so I am sure there was no sentimental attachment to it. Probably was a house of horrors. He should have just sold it.
Macon isn't all like this but it's not that far off. A lot of industry has left Macon. Then, we had a horrible mayor who left the city near bankruptcy. Industry left because some of these plants were getting older and the work ethic here isn't much. "It's not my job..." is what you used to hear. The attitude was another thing that industry just said enough is enough. There are also these sweetheart deals being playing in this and other states. A company gets a deal from a local government to pay no taxes if they move into town. The result can mean floating a bond to upgrade water, sewer and roads to the sight. Then about the time when these tax breaks are set to end, the machinery is shot, the roof is leaking, etc., that company just moves out to another silly city council willing to do another sweetheart deal. Some of those homes weren't abandoned.
What gets me is the Dodge charger sitting in front of a rundown apartment complex. Why don't they move to a better area if they can afford cars like that ?
I was born and raised here.. and unfortunately still here. It's a shame was this town has come to. I think back on the Macon Mall and what it used to be and it's sad to see what it is now.

I am too from macon been living here all my life almost 46 yrs its unreal how our town has went downhill
Have you seen ppl camping around Macon
I was born in Macon, Ga actually at work right now in Macon 😮😢
I'm from Abbeville Georgia about 80 miles south of Macon. I remember spending all day Saturday at the Macon Mall. I have a lot of good memories at the Macon Mall. It's sad to see how that part of Macon has gone down hill the last 20 years
Bless you.
Thank you so much Deborah!! I appreciate it so very much!
I’m from Bibb county grew up in Pendleton homes projects i was 10 when I left I’m 34 now I live in Florida this truly breaks my heart 😢
My hometown!..Born/Raised, and still reside...😔😔
I love Macon! This is so sad to see. I bought a house here for my Med school son and am looking for another property. I think it is only a matter of time for a, "turn around" too many wonderful folks live here and I heard the Mayor is amazing and has big plans. Just like any City you need good leadership. Think about Atlanta and how much the Mayor impacts that City. Shirley Franklin (miss her and if she is reading this ;0) I think you should run again) was the best. Strong, good leadership can turn this wonderful City around.
Whoa! I've been gone for 15 years. Stunned ... No words.
Right
I am looking to buy a house in GA and Macon came up on my search. I saw the amount of homes selling there and I had to come see why so many people are selling and why so cheap. After a couple of videos I am starting to see why. It’s sad honestly because I am already pre-approved and was very excited about Macon.
Visit all the surroundings areas. Not everywhere like this.
Thanks so much for watching!!
I'm looking to move to GA and want to buy a fixer upper. This area seems like a good challenge and cheap!
Nice to see REAL 🇺🇸 on a video like this. WE CAN DO BETTER for AMERICA 🇺🇸
These are some truly sad sights. If only the walls in those empty houses could talk.
@8:38 is that Kingston gardens? The buildings used to be brown
I’m from Macon and it’s not as bad as it seems
It's not we gave more people from all state moving to macon,Ga tell me a state or county is al that and I will do your home town research and how good 👍
Everything 👍
I'm sure! A thousand times worse I would bet.
Sheesh what side u from😂
Love love your channel and your vlogs.
Thank you so much for watching!
Have you ever considered going to Forsyth Georgia
I haven’t been there in a long time. Worth doing?
I reside in Macon Ga now but lived-in Forsyth Georgia for some time
I was thinking about moving out there now this video changed my mind
I sorta feel that way
I love maconga!!! My home town and will always live here.
Is it sad that I recognize most (if not all) of these areas? 🥺
I drive for doordash in Macon and it is crazy. I drive these streets on the daily
Wow!!! A lot of abandoned houses smh 🫤
Oh no most of the city is like this. I unfortunately live here...
OH MY GOSH! Is all of Macon like that ? My sister just moved there about 2 years ago. Now I am worried.
No I’m merely showing the worst areas. There are some nice areas as well.
No
Nope, not at all. North side of town is completely different
It depends on the area. The issue is even if you don't live in the bad area your still extremely close to it.
No, it's not.
Doesn't the city hold responsibility to keep up roads and sidewalks?? Some of this looks like poor city management.
You can purchase these properties around $20k and downtown Macon is very entertaining!
You went down roads that I’m scared to turn on haha. Macon got a big dose of drugs and section 8 in the late 80s. The decent folks fled and moved to north Bibb, Jones county or Houston county.
I might be wrong, but it looks like you went through a apartment complex on log cabin dr,I lived there during the mid 70"s Born and raised in macon!!
Yep That was Green Meadows
You can even feel it on my street Mary drive. we have alot of abandoned decaying houses.
I came from the Simpsons. But wow, I love your content. Your videos really make you feel that you are right there. Greetings from Mexico.
Thank you so much for watching!
Grew up in Warner Robins. I can imagine what these areas are like during the wee hours in the morning.
The project housing and townhouses all look like they do in my area (SC lower Michigan), I'd swear same developers and everything.
Turning some of those corners, definitely had that vibe at times!
It's really sad. I drove around downtown and the outskirts the Same thing is happening all over Macon. So many homeless too. 😪
i wonder what the peach orchard area looks like now
I visited this town in 2014, what a mess. Hopefully, it's gotten better?
Camera work is amazing!❤
Typical rural Georgia housing problems. People who own the properties do not keep them up. Renters pay high rent for garbage housing. The cities condemn the housing, and run renters out--forcing them to pay even higher rents. This is all over rural Georgia---just one city of very many . How do we fix this ??? We must make more renters home owners, and help re-hab neglected properties.
It's how I just move to Georgia now I get all this Georgia stuff in youtube recommendations but dam this is a straight ghost town
Its used to be full of life here! But home is home! Forever Mac-Town! ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
Is cheap to buy a house like that?
i still live in macon,ga and nothing has chamged!!
I lived in Brunswick Ga in the ninety's. This place was bad even then.
I’ll have Brunswick up next week. Thanks for watching!
Sangat bagus dari setiap sudut kampung rumah rumah masih terlihat jarang
Your rolling Fort Hill one of the highest crime zones in town. This is east side, West and South not quite as bad but the old mall is all but abandoned and it's bleeding that side of town now. The north side has the money and new mall trying to get the more wealthy neighboring county residents money.
Lived on Hyde Park Rd. Wander what it looks like?
My church is on a street and there’s a whole bunch of abandoned houses abandoned stores etc my church was abandoned before my family got it
City hall and chamber have to do a better job of bringing in businesses that create jobs.
Thank a you friend
I think about going to my Grandma's in Bird City and thinking about how much it's in decline.Unionville looks bad too.
The good thing about this is that we can get outr credit together and buy these houses cheap.. remodel and it up ourselves.
So many dish TV' receptors. Living in squalor but able to have DISH TV' and nice cars. SMH
I grew up in the Roberta GA and spent a lot of time in Macon.
In many places there are housing shortages. Its sad and baffeling.
What you tryna say?! We know Bibb co ain’t as fancy but it’s home to us
It looks like a dump. I’d wanna leave.
@@mattf.1233 Its not all bad. Northern part is still nice.
What gets me is the Dodge charger sitting in front of a rundown apartment complex. Why don't they move to a better area if they can afford cars like that ?
