Incorrect, Steven Spielberg was supposed to be the director. Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio however were hired to be the screenwriters for both films. Interestingly they were also the screenwriters for Shrek which shares Monkey Island's anarcho-pop humor.

Monkey Island got its Inspiration from the original Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean Ride (1967) and in turn the Pirates of the Caribbean Movies got their Inspiration from the story of Monkey Island also heavily but not solely because of the director having previously worked on the cancelled Monkey Island Movie.
