- NOTE: This is Version 2 (bigger, longer & uncut).
This is camcorder footage shot in 1988 driving south from Lane Avenue on the Ohio State University campus all the way to Schiller Park in German Village. This is the raw footage. Most of the bars in south campus were razed to make way for the South Campus Gateway. Here are some of the structures I can identify. Feel free to add to the list in comments (please note the order and timer) and I'll add it to the description.

Subscribed! I love seeing this footage. Reminds me of when I was a kid! Thank you!!
thanks for showing us what Columbus looked like 35 years ago!
I was at OSU from 1999-2003, and this looks more similar to what I remember during my time at Ohio State than it does now. So many incredible memories. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the memories!!! I am from Columbus and have been away since 1984 and this makes me feel so good to see all of these scenes. From my beloved Ohio
State where I spent some of the best years of my life. I will forever be "A Buckeye".
Thanks for posting! Fun to see the Mustard's to Crazy Mama's trip again.
YES! And the Circle Jerks were playing at Newport!
you captured my graduate school life in this video. Best 7 years of my life.
I saw the apt I lived at in 1988, chills.
Cool, what time mark?
@@reedyd 10 seconds in. Barely can see it, I had to pause. Who knows how many times I went to that macdonalds
@@mikef9126 OK... I see it.
On browser you can hit "." and "," (period / comma) to move one frame at a time.
This is awesome! I know every spot. Feels like another life in another time! Thank You.
1:20 This is the first Buffalo Wild Wind (BW3) store in the world. I remember 5 cents wing on Tuesdays.
The location of BW3's is now at Lane and High. It's cool to see this old location
My roommate was a delivery guy at that location in the 1980s. He’d come home each night with a bunch of free wings in styrofoam containers.
This was their second location, they originally opened just a little further north down High St.
There’s something otherworldly about seeing your old grade school in your hometown on RUclips, and from a time not so long ago.
Was it Stewart?
@@reedyd St. Mary’s
Great to see all the old familiar places. Shiller park, German Village, the Short North, the City Center being built which is no longer standing.
Did you think there'd be a platform one day where people would be viewing this 32 years later? Haha. Thanks for the time capsule. I lived on campus '92-97 and it's pretty much how I remember it.
I was living on 12th Ave when this was filmed!!! There is no soul to campus now. Just another strip mall.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Regards.
I would like to see a side by side view of of then and now.
Wow City Center being built.
In my mind this is how Columbus looks and I wish it still did.
I know what you mean. I remember a lot of this look, but it was changing from this when I got there. My personal "classic era" look includes Ugly Tuna, Eddie George's Grille, etc. I remember before that stuff was there though. I need to take a trip out there, but I know it wouldn't be the same place anymore.
0:25 the doorway to Bernies/The Distillery. Great place for those nights when South Campus felt like too far of a walk.
Bernies! Wasn’t that in the basement?!
@@NEANEA72 Yes, down in the basement. Sounds like you were there. Good deli food on the Bernies side. The Distillery side had live music, a beer tour of the world, and artistically graffitied restrooms. I just recently learned that sadly the Newport/Agora building is for sale. I hope it does not get torn down for redevelopment like so much of High Street has.
@@Zoetropeification good place. i remember a leg of the pool table being held up by a bunch of magazines that were congealed together. i believe we used to get two rum and cokes for a dollar back in the day.
Wow what a blast from the past!
I worked at the Trilogy Bar.
Lol Just Sweats. That was a fascinating case of murder for insurance money. It was later featured on Forensic Files.
So many memories from my 24 years spent on South Campus at 10th & High St, 1960-1984
Ohh Wow thst was truly wonderful to watch. A wonderful way to share with younger people as well as to new buckeyes. Thank you for that.
Hey you missed the Short North Tavern!!! I lived in Short North/Village '93-2000.... was an Assistant State lawyer and then on my own... I remember a lot of this..... I was there like in 2005 and it was sucking.... now I can only imagine how corporatized that whole Deal is..... thanks for the memories, peace.
I had '00-'04 there... it's shocking now
Tradewinds was a small retail store where the wave mural was painted on the building.
Yes! I remember that place too
And always the smell of incense drifting out of that store.
Great video! Class of '97 and we had alot of those stores on High St when I was there. Too bad no shot of Papa Joe's, but loved that you got in the BW-3 and Mustard's, Rax and the Newport! Used to go to that UDF all the time to by beer. We lived on Chittenden and Indianola and it was the closest place to walk to. Buckeye Carry Out was a great place to by whip-its.
'97 here as well.
Springbreak was formerly The Serene and a favorite of some of us in the early 70's. I have been looking forever for anything like this. This is wonderful.
after yet another 90 degree day this makes me really look forward to the fall/winter. thanks for the upload
Thanks for the great memories.
Great video! I've been a nearly-lifelong Columbus resident (1978-1992, 1998-2002, 2003-present) so this was great. Too bad we couldn't see what the Short North looked like then, which was probably pretty blighted at the time.
It was really bad during the gap you were gone. I was in high school and college then and worked at the North Market. Walking through the Short North was absolutely terrible. The sight of child prostitutes (male and female) was routine and even during the daytime it was just a really nasty vibe.
Cool Video. I graduated in 1987, I remember this drive well. I am trying to recall the Cajun Chicken & Dirty Rice place in the same building as BW3 (downstairs) & Honey Crisp Bakery & Gyro Shop (upstairs) The chicken place was upstairs at the end opposite the bakery.
Thanks Again.
Appollo’s?
Circle Jerks at the Newport 1988. I was at that show.
There were two gyro shops upstairs. Apollo's was one of them. Buck-a-gyro!!!!!
Best gyros. Especially after going out
thanks! brings back memories!
@surlyshirley999 Thanks for your feedback. Sadly, there is no footage between those two points. If you watch the other version of this video (the shorter version) [ watch?v=wB2Z08za1vI ] I slowed the video down so people can get a better look at the southernmost bars (South Heidelberg, etc).
So cool to see the bones of City Center rising at 6:00!
It's crazy because most things look different now.
Fascinating!! How funny...the City Center is being built! LOL!! Shame the Short North wasn't captured. Great post. Thanks!
Great video -- it's fun to contrast this with Google Street View, which shows a remarkable change even from 2007 to present day, though certainly not as drastic of a difference as it was in 1988.
Fat Jimmy's Creole Chicken was next to Apollos.
Now the hipsters have re-discovered that kinda thing at Hot Chicken Takeover. It is excellent, but Fat Jimmy's was first.
@VoiceOfDuty That's sad. Another memory gone. Thanks for the info.
Drank at those nasty fabulous bars. Also, the pic of the City Center being built 😢
Awesome, thanks for posting
Wow. I'm surprised you don't have video of me in my car(or walking). I lived over off of Alum Creek(went to DeepFry...err, Devry) but spent a huge part of my time on High St right around that time... I'd still live in Columbus if it weren't so cold in the winter...
So what were they driving? I'm guessing late '70s early '80s Chevy. Maybe a Monte Carlo. My '79 El Camino had a steering wheel that looked just like that.
A 1980 Plymouth Sapporo. My gf was short which is why there is a lot of dashboard in the video.

@@reedyd Thanks! Good thing I wasn't betting money!
Would love to have seen the Short North.
But it was a great video because I didn't go to downtown Columbus too much during that time but I lived in Columbus since the end of May of 1985 and still live here today
Oh my god ! I went to that Circle Jerks show!
+Justin Bonnell It was July 12th 1988.
This was taken in July? All the trees are so bare.
Spring Break sign says 'Merry Christmas' (1:41)
And a paddywagon waiting at Schiller Park to end it all
I love that the Circle Jerks were playing that week at the Newport; pre-All-In-One; Mr. Mustard's Mania Sat 6-9 (I bet I was there that night) (and than at Spring Break later); I never cared about anything past Crazy Mama's. Is there an MPEG or MOV posted somewhere, I would love to have a copy of this?
You know you're old when something 23 years old seems drastically changed compared to when you originally haunted High St..... and that was only about 10 years earlier!
Love it!
Broad & High Praise. I love it when I find a link to my video embedded on social media or local news sites. Thanks!
1:22, BW-3. Great place back then.
Indeed. Midnight at the gyro shop with J and A "back in the day". See my other video "Dink Sum Alkyhall" [v=4uNgKKoOm9Y] Seems like a lifetime ago, perhaps because it was.
It's funny, the rapidity with which City Center went completely to hell in a hand basket. Next Big Thing to Hideous Eyesore in less than 20 years.
I kind of wished you would have went down Nationwide Boulevard to see the old Ohio pen before Nationwide Arena was built and also I would have liked to have seen all the things on Neil Avenue like what was there before the LC Pavilion and Huntington Park was there
Does anyone know when Insomnia opened its High St location? When I was a teenager (late '90s) that place was like a portal to another universe...
I think that would have been '92. Hope the last ten years have treated you well! 😹
@@robertdog Thank you! See you in 2032 🖤
Buckeye Donuts has been there for AGES.
What’s the name of that place on the NE corner of 15th across from Long’s? A van obscures the name and I cant remember....
Flying Tomato?
No…it was some type of bagel place.
7:40 stewart elementary
Which I attended 6th grade, 12 years before this video was shot.
Before the BW3 at 1:22 there used to be a little greek restaurant there that sold Gyros. Anybody remember that places Name. I remember they were having to move but lost track of that place. Loved that little spot
Used to frequent this establishment many a late night. Wasn't it simply called "Gyro Shop"? Right next door to the Silver Ball arcade to the left of Subway.
reedyd I believe you are correct on name. Thanks. I always have been curious if after they relocated( not sure where tho just remember daughter saying landlord gave them notice to relocate)if they stayed in business. Was a great place to grab an authentic gyro
For some reason Souvlaki Palace came to mind but that might have been an unrelated venture. The other place I loved was called Shalom on the other side of High just north of Lane. Awesome shawarma!
reedyd appreciate the reply back. I grew up in Columbus until I left for the Army back in 1987. The Gyro shop has been a great memory of mine and this video really brought many more that i had forgotten. Back then Campus was more bars than anything but loads of fun especially late on the weekends. Sure has changed now that’s for sure. Thanks again
We just called it "dollar gyros"--stop after the bars to get our $1 gyro (/ji-ro/).
1:50 Phil-E steak and egg-roll followed by Crazy Momas ..
They had great Philly steaks and egg drop soup!
I wonder how long that house behind Charley's was boarded up...
Buckeye doughnuts is still on campus in their original location.

This is like Times Square before they made it family friendly....lol
I was down there in '88-'91......probably passed you that day! :)
The video didn't show downtown very well. I would have liked to have seen Lazarus and Woolworth department stores and the skating ring that was downtown. It showed way to much of the dashboard and windshield wipers. Sort of disappointed.
Please see Alice at the front desk for a refund.
Ice Skate rink was the Centrum and I think was gone by '88?
You cut out the section from 9th to Goodale.
i love how things have barely changed across the street from campus
@jsadklfjsdkafl Unfortunately the few that are still open are no where near me. Used to have like 4 of them within a 30 minute drive of me. Those were simpler days filled with Uncle Al fun meals and magic... :P
No more String Shoppe...just demolished.
Boots and pants boots and pants boots and pants boots and pants
Why did it skip the Short North?
My gf stopped recording, sorry.
1:28 yes!
Why did you cut out the short north? Most people would much rather have seen the Short North and the contrast between hood and today 😂
IIRC my gf stopped shooting video between those points. I don't believe there is any footage.
RAX! OH MAN! I used to love me some Rax. BBC (Beef Bacon Cheddar) in my mouth!
Circle Jerks!
I can see my houses from here
One of the first BW3s.......and it's all going to be demolished very soon.........
WOW that United dairy farmers is still their
Hello there! Please turn on your messaging capabilities, we work with a student organization with Ohio State and would love to use this footage in promotional materials for this year's Homecoming! Thanks so much!
You've reached me, what can I do for you?
@@reedyd Hello hello! Thank you for the quick response, we were wondering if we could use your footage in our homecoming promo video for this year? Thanks so much!

@@reedyd We're not sure exactly what parts we'll be using yet, probably small clips of campus that appear throughout the video! Would it be possible to get a better quality of the entire video? Thanks!
I’m from Columbus one the only “good” artist here and this crazy
What does this even mean?
6:45 Dude your girlfriend is HAWT.
I miss those old Taco Bell locations.
Looks exactly the same.
Before campus turned to shit
Cool video. Obnoxious music.
Look city center being built and now is gone
