This week we decided to do something a little different and do a funny language video. As I’m learning Swedish, I’m constantly giggling to myself about different funny words in the Swedish language that if taken literally, mean something really hilarious. I gathered some of my favorites and surprised Lisa with a challenge video. We can’t watch this without laughing, can you?

We had an exchange-student from the states in my class during high school (gymnasium), we because really good friends and hung out a lot, she made some lovely tries to swedie-fy some american sayings, ”it goes straight to my hips” became ”Havreballen kommer på min rumpa” and another time she explained to me that she was going to see a ballet here in Sweden; ”Jag ska gå på balle, och se nutcracker!”
We both laughed so much afterwards when I explained what she actually said! This was in 2008, and we have kept contact ever since, next summer she is coming to Sweden again for my wedding!
About the "butter goose": Back in the day when they churned butter or did some other stuff to the milk, I don't remember exactly, there were a few lumps of butter floating on top of the milk.They took those lumps and used it on the bread. And those lumps were swimming on top of the milk like geese. Butter geese... and yeah, there you go :) smörgås!

If you're after a source of this, it's featured in a Swedish ethymology dictionary from 1922 for example :) there's a scan to be found if you google "smörgås svensk etymologisk ordbok runeberg"

Also 'Sköldpadda' (turtle) translates to 'Shieldtoad'

I love this video, mostly because of how stupid some words sound when they sound like other words as well, like how "married" and "poison" is the same word in Swedish! But I just had to compile a list of the words real etymologi, so we don't look just so crazy anymore:
Smörgås - As others have commented, comes from that little clumps of butter would float up as geese in a river when you churn the butter.
Jordgubbe - "Gubbe", today meaning "small old man", was from the beginning a dialect word that meant "little lump", so it's more literally "earth lump".
Blixtlås - Duuuuh, it's "lightning lock", because you can "lock" two halves of something so fast!
Tupplur - "Lur" is except a word for tricking someone and a modern term for mobile phone is also an old word for "nap", and roosters usually take short naps, so it's rooster nap!
Snuskhummer - "Hummer" is an old slang term for a hand, so it's more literally "dirty hands", so yeah, a real sleaze bag.
Klockren - "Klockren" from the beginning were specifically when something SOUNDED beautiful, like a church bell (kyrkklocka in swedish), but has evolved into meaning something great/beautiful in general.
Örngott - Comes from the word "örn", which is old swedish for the plural of "öra" (ear), and "gott" just means good or in this good for, so it's "good for the ear"!
Plugghäst - "Plugghäst" was a slang for a type of chair for study. Think of a school desk whith a built in sitting beam which you straddle over it to sit on it. So a "plugghäst" was someone always glued to the school desk!

klockren, if it's related to sound then it wouldn't be weird to assume it's related to the ticking noise of watches, they probably have to be right
örngott, could the bird "örn" be related to ear? i think birds tend to see well

Many of those words are composite words containing old or forgotten words. For example "örngott" Which means pillowcase. This word is seemingly made out of the words: "örn" meaning "Eagle" and "gott" meaning "good". But This is in fact wrong. The words örngott is an ancient word which is made out of the words "öra" meaning "ear" and the now forgotten word "gat" which meaning "comport" (Swe: behag). So the word's original meaning is actually something like: "comport for the ear".
Wow really? That's really interesting. Is that the case for most of the words that I'm finding funny?
Maybe, but some of them could have been weird even from the beginning. Who knows?

Snuskhummer (sleaze bag) translated as 'dirty lobster', actually comes from the way some men stereotypically and traditionally like to harass women by pinching their behinds. Obviously likening their hands to lobster claws. This expression can be used about anyone displaying a sexually gross behavior these days, but that's how it came about anyway. :)

Hahaha amazing! My girlfriend and I wrote our own language book (Swedish & Dutch). But she wrote the Dutch loud with Swedish accent and I did the Dutch accent with Swedish. Was so funny. Maybe nice idea for you too girls. Ps we spoke already little bit each other language. 😊❤️
As a Dane I loved watching this, because even though the words are not the same in Danish, most of the direct translations are! 😂
I thoght "Klockrent" meant "bell-clean". Because a bell rings with clean tones...
Also interesting that we have a phrase in English "to clean someone's clock," but it means to obliterate an opponent, usually in sports games. When I try to find the origin of it, nothing is quite satisfying.

Klockrent probably means the translation bell-in tune, since klocka can mean bell and rent can mean in tune. Hence a bell ringing in perfect pitch.
Compare to "clear as a bell".
"to clean someone's clock" don't know about sports but if it was war then it wouldn't be surprising if you see the enemies as dust or germs that needs to be "cleaned"

This Colorful World That is my favorite thing about different languages and when u translate them into English. There are several Spanish sayings that make absolutely no sense in English and crack me up.

åhhhh GUD jag dööööör ... I didn't even make it to 1:59 and I am cracking UP. Swedish has SO many fun words but I've forgotten how fun they were. I still, though, after nearly 10 years can NOT keep from giggling inwardly when I ask someone what time it is and the answer is 'halv sex' My english ears never cease to hear 'have' Svenskar är SÅ ordentliga av sig att det finns ett klockslag för älsklog. ;D hahahahaa THANK you for this video.

You know, I have never heard have sex! Only halv sex... 5:30 in my head. However, when I first came to Sweden and looked at newspapers that I couldn't read at all, the word sex popped out everywhere! I thought it meant sex and thought Sweden was nonchalantly obsessed with sex. Now I wonder why the number six is so prevalent in Swedish newspapers.

Oh this is so funny because you don't really think of the words like this, as they are so obvious when you say them. It's just when someone hands you these words that it becomes clear. Some of them are so weird. "Dirty lobster" wtf.

you probably don't need to know the meaning of the word or the name to understand the concept of it

Me and some of the other finnish people that I play with sometimes like to annoy our international gaming friends by directly translating finnish words into english. Sometimes somebody gets butthurt and it's kinda hilarious.
This is incredibly funny. I speak Danish as well as Swedish and will do the same with Danish verses English. This couple is absolutely adorable. I hope they have many happy years together. 😂❤️👍😊🌹

But as a Norwegian who got damaged by living in stocholm when i was a kid i could already tell you that Swedish is ridiculous. Since i speak this hybrid language i hear it all the time from people how silly it sounds. Lol. Just gotta love the sillyness tho.

@@MrFelixify Jamen å andra sidan så hade vi ju "läderlappen" när normännen alltid sa "batman". "läderlappen" låter ju fördjävligt roligt om en superhjälte! Normännen använder nog oftare de engelska uttrycken, så svenska låter förmodligen hysteriskt roligt för norrmän ibland! Samma med "Kalle Anka" där dom har "Donald Duck". Måste också låta förjäkligt roligt!
Edit : Hmm, får kanske ta tillbaka lite med det där. "Benjamin Syrsa" heter faktiskt "Timmi Gresshoppe" på norska! Hahaha!

My boyfriend lives in Sweden and I want to live there with him, but the rules are so harsh and it makes it hard for an American to move to Sweden. That's what I want more than anything in the world though, to move to Sweden to be with him

As someone who is currently learning Swedish and is moving to Sweden in a few months, I can relate to the "Swedish is ridiculous" statement LOL. I feel absurd trying to pronounce things in Swedish at times haha. It's so difficult because I'm a perfectionist, but Swedish is hard to learn at first!
Also my boyfriend and I were just talking about the Swedish name for pillow case! Hahaha eagle good xD

Fox is actually spelled "räv" in swedish, but reef is correct! :)

It'd be super fun too! And some proverbs are the same, like touch wood = ta i trä.
Sköldpadda is by far my Swedish word. It’s the word for turtle and it directly translates to shield toad.

fact is that american english has alot of close words to swedish norwegain, danish aswell as english and french and other languages in europe since ppl moved from here to create american a few 100 years ago! not like american always been there its an evolution of a huge mix
