Listening to this, I can see why the Sega team wanted MJ to do the music to Sonic 3. This could've totally worked as the end credits music, as an instrumental like this here, of course.
This is a quality instrumental. I myself do instrumental tracks of my favorite bands etc. Mostly Depeche Mode, Jean Michel Jarre and Michael Jackson. I've done this song myself but you got the squelchy FM sound that I guess is supposed to be close to a clavi, absolutely spot on. The bass line is very well made too. Bravo.
The original track to this has a clavinet? Nice. AS a bassist is there any part in this track for a bass guitar or is a synth pretty much taking the whole thing?
Thanx for your compliments. You`ll laugh... the squelchey fm-clavinet sound is in truth a very short sampled&looped (transposed) hi-hat with a separated layered "Lesley-Effect" on it. I tried to generate it with a fm-synthesizer but the simple sampled hi-hat gave me the best results. You can do such a lot of (FM) things with looped "metallic-percussive drum sounds" ;-) Inicidentally, this is a trick of sound-design which I had copied from Depeche Mode / Alan Wilder ;-)
I'm a very big fan of Dm, especially the Wilder years, so to speak. Done a lot of their songs. I've subscribed to you anyway. I like your stuff, you have very similar taste and musical style to me. Looking forward to me.
oh man so many ghost notes compared to how I thought this would sound.. weird. the freaking bass notes are like an octave higher than i thought too, until you get into the verse.
DX-bass sounds confused me too... always `n ever more. Often I`m not sure if it`s a octave up or down ? Even the MJ basses are very difficult to locate `cause sometimes he used a 3 layered bass sound (double octave) and a warm sweep analog synth down in the sub.
Thanks for the reply, ForceStudios. Glad I'm not just tone deaf or something hah. Either way great job, way more than I could ever probably do in a DAW. I think Quincy Jones did a lot of the synth work on this album, but could be wrong I'll have to check... he always made at least his successful productions have certain aural illusions or what have you :) In my opinion of course.
Don`t have to worry...you`re okay :D It`s just a "natural" thing... if you have a "nature sound" like a piano, guitar or bass guitar etc, you can simply hear the octave or if it`s double-layered etc. `cause we definitely know how a natural sound sounds solo and we can distinguish it in the octave or played octaved, layed etc. Synths (even basses) are often 2-layered sounds (in their "nature") and sometimes we hear the parts in the lower octave and the next moment in the upper range... and that irritates our brain `cause we don`t know if this is the "natural sound". But whenever you`re unsure about a right octave... you can be sure (mostly) it`s a double-layered sound with a sub-octave ;-)
..but I don`t want you to hate me...but I love the DX-5...`cause the DX-7 sounds like an "hospital"...clinically and digital cold... the DX-5 was warm and human...like a sexy playmate ;-)

People saying Sonic (which is right!) But it also sounds like it could've been a beat Pharrell would've done on his 'In My Mind' album.

Keys from Yamaha dx7 bass lead

+ForceStudios Hey come on that sound was used so much that it has embedded itself into our DNA.
I think before the BIG BANG THEORY...there was a DX-7 ;-)

Os timbres em sua maioria, estão muito parecidos. mas os acordes, e as inversões da linha de baixo, Não batem com o original.
Suena a vice city :v
