Hoping to see lots more trail content on GTN in 2024 - the scenery is just so much better than road running. Plus, there will be many more opportunities to see Mark face-planting in the mud. 😂
Been a trail runner for many years now and love it! trail running, for me, made me a much better, stronger, and faster runner on any surface. As a triathlete this was a huge advantage competing in traditional and off road triathlons.
All my runs are with my Border Collie Pip, so we hit the trails as much as we can. I love the variety of trail running, a good head torch is essential this time of year, I use a Silva Trail Runner Free Hybrid, it works really well over all those tree roots in the woods and is nice and light weight.
A brilliant intro to trail running! Well done GTN. I have run trail more than paved surfaces for the past 10 years and have a lot less injuries, meaning I run more often and further. A good feature in Strava is the 'trail run' record mode, so the stats better reflect the undulations of trail and a grade adjusted pace 'GAP" is shown to reflect your efforts in a realistic way. Yes - trail runners do hike, climb and walk. It's often a more efficient way to cover the terrain and at times much safer and allows us trail runners to access some very special natural places. For the trail curious road runner - give it a try by stepping off your paved surface and maybe onto a nice gravelled park pathway. Build from there, and as James said, don't fret about your pace, or compare to road times. There's some other fun to be enjoyed, and trail is complimentary to your road running. Cheers from NZ.
Trail running is the perfect gateway into amazing scenery. Although it was brutal Mark's Ultra Trail Snowdonia ride was an amazing 👉ruclips.net/video/VRg4uBClqGA/видео.html - Do you think trail running is going to be the big thing this year?
Very nice video. Trail is also ver nice to do. It’s just that I have to wait to may to be able to do trail running. We got 1,5 m of snow right now. For sure it’s possible with winter trail, even one event “Höga kusten Winter trail” . But before running in “the salad “ as we used to say , we have to wait at least three months. Höga kusten Winter trail could be something for you ;) .
Trail runner here. I can't agree more about the benefits of being in nature. Something that I would mention though is wildlife. Depending of where you live and time of the year, there could be snakes, coyotes, bears, deers, rabbits, mountain lions (at least we do here in California). Most of them are scared of you, but you have a keep an eye out. Plus pay closer attention to your step on the uneven terrain. I personally avoid high cushion shoes on trails to reduce the risk my ankle on a rock.
I’ve done a lot of trail running in the last two years and there are some negatives to it. First of all I have tripped and fallen many times on roots, stumps, loose rocks, etc. I’ve even fallen into a deep hole. Fortunately I’ve never been seriously injured. Keeping that in mind the second issue is that you are often in very remote places and far away from assistance. So you have to carry a lot of gear with you. Fueling, hydration, trekking poles, rain gear, etc. You have to carry a lot more gear trail running than running on the road. A small first aid kit is a must. Trail running is slow. You will move considerably slower on the trails. I personally enjoy going faster and trail running can be frustrating as you average 11-15 minute miles. You will do lots of walking because it’s almost impossible to run some of the hills. If you haven’t trained hills a lot, your quads will take a beating and you will be very sore. It’s still a niche sport so many of the races I do only have 20-30 total entries. That isn’t always bad, but that means less support in dangerous conditions.
I either run in the trails or in the running track if I have to do intervals or something that requires a really fast pace. The only disadvantage of trail running is that your running shoes are never going to be nice and clean 😅 .
I am primarily a trail/grass/cross country runner vs. a pavement runner (except when there is snow, where I Nordic ski instead of run). And FWIW, all of the Ultra trail runners I know who don't get injured all the time walk up the hills.
For security most running apps and phones let you share your location with friends and family, so if something happens you’re easy to locate (mind you it does give away the cafe stop on the way home…)
I started out running on trails, because we have a great trail system really close to our house. However, lately, after many many years of running on the trails, I have been falling a lot :( I don't know what has changed but I seem to trip over a root or rock and take a tumble down a trail way too often lately. Am I just getting old? Failing eyesight? Not paying attention? Trying to get out of running by laying face first in the rocks and dirt? I still prefer trails to road running, even with the mud in my teeth :)
I fall ask the time, but I always have. Maybe it's time to get your eyes checked? Worst case, you could transition to gravel/ smooth paths.. trail vibes and benefits, no grabby roots and rocks!
Two great suggestions, thanks. It very well could be the eye. Today I stuck to fire roads mostly and survived 8 miles without an incident. I’ll give both a go. Thanks!
Trail Running, and trail races, is a sport of its own, with different equipment, skills, fueling, and vibe. If you're feeling bored or frustrated with road running, give it a try. It's so much more relaxed, enjoyable, and friendly, that it rekindled my passion for running, and I just can't bring myself to run roads anymore!
Are you a fan of trail running? 🌲🏃
Trail running deserves its own channel

We'll be on the trails this year don't you worry! 👀Are there any events that you think we should be at?

Trails and fells are my favourite places to be, just a shame at this time of year the mountains try their best to kill you
There is one more fascinating additional benefit for running on trails: higher cadence happens almost automatically.

There are so many amazing trails in the bushlands around my local area. Loads of fun koala-spotting!!

A chest torch gives more depth perception than a head torch. Because you can see shadows of objects. Handy if there's a big drop by rock edges.

Nice introduction 👌 look forward to future videos
Is running on roads full of pothols trail running? 😉
Love the show

I can run further and faster on a trail because I enjoy myself so much more than in the city streets.
I like the trails. The trails routes are the real freedom and I am feeling the nature than on the roads.
First step. Join James in his white shoe choice
I loved trail running when I lived in MA but in Florida Issa no for me knowing there’s pythons and gators on them
