    This is such a great video, I had to learn about this over many videos and observation from native speakers, and this video wouldve made things so much easier.
    I'm sure still will help so many chinese learners!

    I also think the same way when I learn Chinese using Hello Chinese app where the native speakers tend to speak smoothly. Now it makes sense. Thank you so much for this great video.

    Great video. The only thing that I didn't see mentioned was the vocal fry (cracking sound) on the 3rd tone. No one seems to mention it, but I've heard it all over China. Chinese people tend to do it when they speak with falling intonation in English too.

    谢谢老师. I am not a native speaker nor am I very fluent but I found myself subconsciously shortening the third tone and was scared that native speakers won't understand me but I'm glad to find out that it's normal and common. Such a relief.

    Damn this is so frickin useful why do no other videos or teachers talk about this LOL ... Bit of a "What Chinese teachers don't want you to know!" moment. Especially with "ni hao" and tones in general being the first thing everyone learns - It always confused me how the tone in "ni" usually sounds different than the one in "hao".

The pinyin is jǐe jǐe, so from this lesson I would think it would be spoken with a rising third tone followed by a half or full third tone. But every time I hear this word it is instead spoken with a half third tone followed by a first tone! Can someone explain? Thank you!

      @@HarbinMandarin ahh thanks, i will just leave some space in my notebook just in case. I am currently watching your chinese vocabulary builder series lesson 4, they are pretty useful.
      Also an irrelevant question, my parents have worked at taiwan for almost 7 years, but they are now here. Together, while I'm learning chinese, there are contradicting pronunciations that let to long discussions like in 1 hundred, they say its yi pai not yi bai. Is it normal, or their words are outdated?

    Very interesting lesson. I have a couple of questions.
    First, do you think that these kind of third-tone tonal changes could encourage "lazy practices" in terms of not speaking clearly? For example does it give the impression that one is "mumbling their Mandarin" or is "not sounding intelligent" because it sounds like one is not speaking their words clearly?
    Second, I think that I sometimes use The Rising Third Tone correctly, but my Chinese fiancé is often correcting me. She says "No no you're saying the 2nd tone you should be using the 3rd tone". That makes me think that my Rising Third tone sounds too much like the Second Tone. Do you have any tips for making the Rising Third Tone more clear? Is it safer for me to stick with the Half Third Tone? Or just pronounce the Third Tone fully?
    Thanks for reading my comment!

    • @HarbinMandarin
      @HarbinMandarin  3 года назад +1

      Hi Richard. These changes are done to make the words flow more smoothly. It's hard to give examples in a comment, but I'll try. I think the example I gave in English of "Go Away" becoming "Go Wa Way" helps illustrate this. If you say "Go-Wa-Way" when speaking slowly and the syllables are disconnected it will sound wrong and strange. If it's spoken so that the syllables are all connected and flow together it will sound perfectly normal.
      Similarly, when there are are two third tones in a row, the first one should change to the rising third tone to make the words flow together. If these are said separately then it will also sound wrong.
      I hope this helps. As an overall answer, I don't think this encourages lazy practices - it's how people naturally speak, but if not pronounced correctly or said in a disconnected way it will sound wrong.
