  • The search and rescue mission continues in George following the collapse of a multi-storey building on Monday afternoon.
    Seven people have been confirmed dead with 39 still pinned underneath the debris . Rescue workers are currently on site in efforts to retrieve those unaccounted for.
    To discuss the possible cause of this collapse we are joined by Gundo Maswime, UCT Civil Engineering Lecturer.

    Umm SABC...a building collapse is a structural issue...therefore you'd need a Structural Engineer to give comment

      That where well get from the investigation, especially if that engineer isn't registered straight to prison.

      You've really missed the point here. The original plans were submitted and subjected to rigorous oversight. The alteration, however, don't go through the same process. And George is known to just rubber stamp any changes made post-submission. It's why they have bridges to nowhere.

      My original comment was based on the "expert" they got in. This thread lost track immediately 😂

    The lecturer appears analyse the possible cause of the collapse correctly. The truth will come once the investigation is completed. It could be the case that the construction deviated from the approved design. But lets wait ...for now the main objective is to rescue people trapped under the rubble. Please dont stop after three days, cuz humans can live much longer up to 2+ weeks without water and food.

    Not a civil engineer, but if design was correctly done adding floor should not do this if safety factor was maintained?

    • @Luke-hq1pu
      @Luke-hq1pu 22 дня назад +3

      Seems like what he is implying is that the columns were initially designed to accomodate the loads from four floors and then the design team decided to add an additional floor without reconsidering the capacity of the columns.
      Typical saftey factors for structural loads (dead loads) are around 1.2 or an additional 20% of the load already taken by the structural elements. An additional floor matching the size and extent of the previous ones below would well exceed this saftey factor. You would need to have had a saftey factor of 2 or 100%, which is simply never done in practice.

      @@Luke-hq1pu thanks. I thought the norm was a safety factor of 2.

    19 workers disappeared from site. Why? Did they break something?

    The cement slabs look very thin for a multi storey building?

    • @Cent51
      @Cent51 21 день назад +2

      The fact that the slabs did not break and fall as one says it strong enough.
      Normaly floor slab 200mm plus , but that is where and why you have an engineer on the project..

    Awu SABC a UCT lecturer for analysis really though. Shouldn't it be a professional practicing in the feild with experiance giving their expert comment?

      Was thinking the exact same thing. Well they always use scholars as experts on media and not the actual expert professionals. No disrespect or hate to the scholars. Just you guys not really practicing anymore

      Very impressive CV. Ten years in the game. Professional engineer for maybe 10 years? Too many qualifications and not an expert if you have too many qualifications. They call them an academic. Hence why academics engineers don't build the great inventions, but study about it

      Not at all my dear. The contractor is one of your white brothers. Liatel Developments. The guys name is Theuns Kruger. Sorry to burst your bubble. So quick to want to blame black people for everyone. Sorry this one is on you. Do you really think an area like George would allow a black contractor to get work there given how much you people love to gate keep things and shut black people out of business and economic activity. Sorry hey, nice try, but this one is all you! 🙏🏽 have yourself a blessed day

    30 percent pass rate in South Africa that is why the building and South Africa is collapsing

      Lol if you think you can study engineering with 30 percent then okay maybe you were from the 30 percent pass rate graduates. But yeah matric isn't really worth much and you don't need matric to work as a shelf packer but it's apparently required

    I suspect the formwork company and that this is a back propping error perhaps due to insufficient tools they they tend to take risks because similar to the dead shore formular can withold the structure on it's own I doubt that the soil bearing capacity would drop so rapidly with proper back propping wet concrete, structural failure nor poor concrete design is out of the picture if proper scaffolding took place.

    The Lecturer taught the civil and structural Engineer so you cant discredit the master coz you want to hear from the student. lol

  • @aml6400
    @aml6400 22 дня назад

    The presenter took the lecturers assumptions as bible verses or fact. You should stop trying to put words in the guys mouth. He gave hes professional judgment and you assume he said that is exactly what happened before any investigation. Let the people first go out there and measure the columns and number of rebars used combared to the design etc.
