- Needed some hammock time in the woods.
On the North end of the Superior Hiking Trail.
Nice to be in the woods with no snow. Plenty of skeeters though. But I think I got on their nerves more than they got on mine.

Over the last couple of years I've loved hanging my hammock here in the UK, you have been an inspiration and a tutor to me. Good luck in everything you do.
I'm in UK too and Shugs exactly why I got into hammock camping...
I had hammock before but shug changed my game thank you sir thank you
Ahh...Sainsbury sausage from the hammock! And a cuppa~
Me too! Uk, hammocking and Shug fan, I mean. A whoo buddy!
Shug, you are a breath of clean air in the smoke filled country!!!
Haaa. Nice phrasing! We are pretty clear here today.
"If you want a lot of chocolate on your biscuit join our club" is the McVities club jingle.
Great Jingle~
10 seconds in and I’m laughing. You’re the man Shug! Thanks for all your content and good clean wholesome entertainment.
Mucho appreciato Mark.
Can't wait to see these videos from you. You make things seam so light and no troubles
Off tomorrow. Very excited! It was a light and trouble free trip.
Shawn thanks for the pictures of the flowers & love the sounds of nature & your mandolin it reminds me of western NC summers as a kid. Good times & thanks for sharing.
Thankee...I always reflect on my time in NC growing up.
But who is Shawn?
Always good to get a glimpse of Shug in the wild. A rare beast.
Getting more rare...thankee~~~
You are a man of many talents, Shug. Thanks for sharing them with us, and for bringing us along. WB!
I am an under-achiever according to my high school teachers!
Been watching your vids for a long time shug. This trip report/vid was super solid. Comedy, educational and inspirational. Thank you so much for these.
Thankee for that. I really felt i did not get much footage until I got home and reviewed. Whoooooo Buddy)))
I’ve been watching since I was 10 and I’m 21 now. I’ve gone on several long treks throughout those years and your videos have always been educational and entertaining. Thank you!
Thanks for the good words William. Means a lot. Never quit going to the woods...
Shug looking happy 👍 Making friends with the bugs
You want the skeeter on your team...not against you~~
Good to see Shug in his natural habitat
Good to be in it. The couch will soon be my natural habitat....haaaa
Just wanted to say that I had to snicker a little when you were talking about the mosquitoes. I'm in the middle of a bikepacking trip through Utah, Wyoming, and now Nebraska. I was in a very remote backcountry ranch a few days ago, having a very stressful day pushing my bike through thick sand. All the while, mosquitoes are attacking me from every angle. They seemed to enjoy the bug spray I was using, and I put my rain jacket on to help with my mid section. All of a sudden, I looked down, and they started attacking my hands, leaving blood spots on my gloves. I very much enjoy your videos and outdoors insight. Keep them coming!
Mosquitoes are a Gang. There needs to be intervention....haaaaa
I love ya brother, really enjoy when you take us all on a trip.
Thanks for the good thought.
Thank you for sharing your adventure! My wife Deb and I really enjoy your videos. Cheers!
Thankee Dan and Deb.
@@shugemery You're very welcome, my friend!
Shugs camping Vids are the best.
I'll say adequate!...thankee.
Really enjoyed that ramble thru the woods. Blessings to you and your family. Keep up the good work. Ian
Thankee and Whoooooo Buddy))))
Nice bridges, hats off to those Minnesota trail crews! ✌🏼🏕️☕️
Truly and for sure. I admire those volunteers for sure. I just send checks~
So lovely to see you out on the trail again, always been curious most of your followers seem male but as a prior own-owner on the Gunflint trail it is always a treat to see you enjoying the great outdoors in the boreal forest…keep posting as long as you can & I will watch…
Heading up to Tuscarora Lodge on Gunflint today for a night in bunkhouse then off in the canoe tomorrow. Thank you.
glad to see you out again followed you for years, as always loved it.
Gets to doing a feller some good out there. Can count my blessings.
Great hike Shug!
Thanks for taking us along.
June….Cleaver😂
Sure that baffled many a folk~~
Yay, a new video! Love all of your uploads, and your high energy that I envy :D
Btw, you're the reason why I got interested in hammock camping. Thanks for that!
Thankee and Whoooooo Buddy))))
Always enjoy your videos. Great job. Thank you
Mucho appreciato~~
Doesn’t get much better than this! Wooo buddy!
Thankee.
Great video enjoyed the hike, enjoyed the circus pics a lot, Thanks for sharing.
Thanks and thankee.
The fires here in Nova Scotia have thankfully abated for now. Quebec and Alberta are most affected right now. Going to be a long wildfire season though. A bit concerning! Thanks for the fantastic trip, as always, Shug!!
Nature does what Nature does...and we sometimes just help it along. Good luck up there.
Fun to see you again, Shug!
Thanks for the video, I hates mosquitoes.
The black flies bug me much more. For sure!
Always have liked the burst of colors from the little treats of the woods. Much abliged for lettin me tag along Mr. Emery, WHOOO BUD-DAAYYY!!
I look forward to the wood's little purdys.....
The wispy clouds are Cirrus. My teacher said they look like horse’s tails. Never forgot that. I learned about ten years ago that cirrus clouds are broken off from a storm front. So if you see them you’re probably going to have a storm in a day or two. Love your videos!!!
Horses tail...love that. I'll never forget.
"I've looked at clouds from all sides now".....
Thankee for the cloud intel
Yup, the wildfires here in NS were terrible! Thankfully the rain we had in the last week helped greatly! Let's keep all appendages crossed that we have no more this season! A wonderful two night hang and your right, if bugs bug ya best stay at home. lol I can remember on one backpacking trip having ears like Dumbo the elephant from black fly bites. Thanks for sharing! :) :)
Glad you got rain. Wildfires are one of natures devilish acts. I would have liked to seen those Dumbo ears!!
You'll always be backpacking and camping out on the trails until you're dying day, SHUG. It's what we live for!
I think so but may just hobble a half mile in~~
Thank you for another great video - definitely good inspiration for me to try a section or two of the SHT after my summer trip to Isle Royale. I have a good idea of how much time these must take you. Thank you and enjoy your canoe trip!
Enjoy that Isle Royal trip. Been meaning to get to that one someday.
Thanks for another great vid Shug! Miss that sweet cool weather down here in Tennessee though it’s not really hot yet. Can’t wait to see the canoe trip!!
Heading out end of week. Be cool.
We missed you by just a couple days! Saw your "sauntered by" check in around Kimball Creek. Beautiful hiking up there.
Truly a saunter. Small world!
Cool look forwards to watching on TV tonight.
Righto~
Good to see you shug
Righto~
❤ At the end of a crappy day, It's great to turn on the TV and load up RUclips and find a new video from Shug! Thank you, Sir.
Appreciate that Rick. Like a day or two of answering folks. It is like a quiet typing soiree.....
@@shugemery and just as I'm reading your reply, I was wondering if I had the Big easy gumbo in the container and then within about 10 seconds of me thinking about it, you say it in the video! I'm thinking I might sneak out to the woods tomorrow for a couple hours.
Looked fun and relaxing.
It was. Sure was.
Awesome video Shug, you seemed really relaxed and enjoying the Hell out of life! Woooh Buddy!!!! 👍
I did feel relaxed. My calfs were really sore after that walk....
Them some big blowdowns! Man, I hate skeeters. You may be swaying me to your magic Skeeter Defeater. And your camera has some impressive zooooooom!
There were some big ones for sure. It does zoom real goodly.
I found coffee crisps in Florida on vacation at Publix. Sooo, I went back and bought 6 of em along with some other goodies. Woooo buddy they are good.
Good find~ They are might good eatin' for sure.
Thanks for the video! 30:47Sounds like you got more than you bargained for from those Nuun tablets.🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂WhooBuddy!
I wish I could fart and have it sound like a mosquito. But it was just a mosquito. Regrets.
@@shugemeryI was thinking that might have been a “shout out” to Hickory!😄
Hey Shug!I bought one of those Thermocells for skeeters and it worked so well I got some for home too-I bought my first because of your video. They really work!
They were a game changer for me too.
Great vid as always!! Thanks for taking me along! Can't wait to get out there myself!! Couple weeks...Listening to you play bass, I'm reminded of the 1975 Gentle Giant, His Last voyage. 🙂
Wow...I have not thought of Gentle Giant in years! Hoping you do get out there.
I see you are hiking with your Trekking Treez pole: I just got back from a 2 week extravaganza and 3 of the 4 sites I could hang, that 4th site I slept on the ground and ordered a Tensa pole when I got home! Thanks for doing the leg work on testing it out, it looks GREAT, I can't wait to try it out😺
Oh, and on my travels I spent a day on Mackinac Island: there was a cafe that made their own pop-tarts, called Poppies... Made me think of you😸
Hope it does the job for you. Hammockers abhor going to ground!
@@shugemery update: have completed a good practice run with the Trekking Treez pole... I love it! Quality construction and easy to use. As a somewhat new hammocker, every new experience is golden. I couldn't help but be amazed at hanging off one tree. This trekking pole gives me peace of mind. Wishing you a good day!😺
@@kat.p.b.5193 I feel ya'! Tensa crew would be happy!
Great recording & camera work . Good times! Tell the mosquitoes I said hello.
Thankee. I did tell them.
Love it shug. You and I have a parasocial relation going, i sometimes wake up and do a little whoobuddy halfway around the world and wonder what you are doing. Wonderful seeing your wife and duaghter, looks like they are happy and living the good life. Best to ya shug and your family
I like that. Thankee. Means a great deal.
I just love how you love all your old faithful cooking gear. It's all got a well-worn patina and you have no need to upgrade. Cooking and eating outdoors is the best part of camping, methinks, With some help from your old friends.
that's probably Rosa canina, the dog rose...lovely
I'm starting to think that my hammock is too big for me. You seem to fit into yours without all the extra space I have in mine.
What length hammock do you have and what is your height? I'm about 6' and use an 11' hammock and often a 10' with my Superior Gear hammock.
@@shugemery I'm 5'6", my hammock's a Warbonnet XL Blackbird which I bought reduced as a "blem"...not sure of the length but I think XL might mean extra long. ?
@@lucyb15 Original Blackbird is 10"....may have suited your height better. Hang that footed high...www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/hammock-setup.pdf
Its always great watching your vids if i rolled in camp and saw your setup one would say that's a professional anyways Merry Christmas to you and yours hope you're making cookies for Christmas
Made a lot of cookies. Baking replaces my old drinking ways. I say double down on Christmas and get into it.
Thanks Shug for the wonderful video of the big green woods! Sure don’t miss them skeeters , but did order one of the shelter bug machines u have. Looking forward to your canoe trip.
Leaving for a 4 day camping/ hammock trip in Northern Arizona tomorrow, can’t wait to lay in my hammock!!
Hey...enjoy your trip and tale time to lollygag.
Thanks. Hope you and yours are well. We have a HWY 61 down here as well. Looking forward to the canoe trip.
61 always leads to good stuff. Was one of my football numbers too.
The dead mozzie on your face was just a warning to others. I approve.
Brilliant comment and appreciated.
I want to see a Hickery Brothers trip!!!!
We were hoping to get together this month but it did not work out. He lives in Virginia and I'm in Minnesota so not as easy as we would like it to be.
Just another awesome video here once again 👍👍⛺️
Mucho appreciato....
Enjoyed tagging along with ya! Nice surroundings.
I enjoyed the surroundings but enjoying my easy chair now.
At 29:53, those pink flowers are really pretty!

Life-of-Shug, living the best life
Always trying too. Harder to do in the current negative vibe world but we can prevail .
Absolutely stunning presentation, your content is so diverse and simply spectacular bud. Bravo, truly incredible cinematography!
Thankee for the good words.
God you make me long for the North woods i got plans for angleworm in July, thanks for showing me that trail. More trips come August and September
Enjoy it up there. Long hike in to spur loop.
Beautiful cascades 🌊🌊 at 12:08

June, Cleaver. Ha, Funny. Nice camping Spot. All Clear in Sector 7.
Got me some good long sleep in the hammock.
Thanks Shug!

Hey Shug! Glad to see you hiking and camping again! We missed you (I know it must sound weird from a guy who never met you in person, but the "missing" is real!)
I really was not in the mood to go so waited until the trail was dry and had no remnants of snow on it. Merci...
@@shugemery glad to know you are well and still in shape! Whoooooo buddy
I couldn’t wait to get out on a hick beautiful day and I stoped to sit in the grass and grad a bite to eat and wouldn’t ya know I got chiggers lmao just awesome
Chiggers may be rare up here. Not been infested in a long time. Hope the bite to eat was good.
"My name is Shug I know that because it says so on my hat" L O L!!! I dont know but that one got me good.
I'm happy it did~~
Awesome job my friend. Thank you.
Thankee Yo. Was nice to be out but I missed the bass....haaaa
@@shugemery You're liking the G&L I see...
@@yobentley7274 I do. I like it a lot. 21 frets helps me get up the neck easier somehow.
Always great to see another video of yours Shug. After a few years hammock camping I still struggle with a few things and keeping going back to your basics but I was wondering if I can trouble you with a few questions. One is every hang out in the backcountry is unique since the distance the trees are apart and their width changes each time. Is there a rule of thumb like if the trees are a certain distance apart the suspension should be X feet high to get the perfect hang ? Also, I am finding with my new hammock with is asymmetrical that when I hang it, it gathers in the middle to create almost a hard line that runs through my legs and not a smooth even lay on the horizontal which makes it uncomfortable and not sure how to prevent this. I am guessing it is one small tweak I am missing. If you have time, maybe you can offer a suggestion and if not,
keep making these great videos .
Hang suspension higher up the tree the further the trees are apart ….ruclips.net/video/-Cvj0ISjzl8/видео.html

Was tasty.
Hi Shug from California
My new name...Shug from California~~haaaa.
Sorry, but I really wanted to smack your face through the TV to kill that skeeter.
Green olives and summer sausage sounds like an excellent combo.
The thought of someone sniffing Thermacell pads to live vicariously through RUclipsrs is hilarious.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
When folks smack my face when a skeeter lands on me....the slap hurts worse than the skeeter bite. I just shin kick them lovingly. Olives and cheese are a delight on trail
Always good to see you Shug. How's your shoulder?
Shoulder is 99.99% good to go. Happy I had it done.
Same here in Sweden: Blowdowns, outnumbered by mosquitos (big red dead mosquito spot in my car), not too warm but too dry, moose poop from winter, lot of green, same beetles, pop tarts...
In black & white with the sausage cigarr you look like Paul Hogan as Clunk Eastwood in "a fistful of ravioli". 😄
I've been to Sweden and the woods here are very similar. Clunk~~! Haaaa
@@shugemery It is so dry here. We are not allowed to do any fire. El Nino.
@@rikidozan553 El Nino is off of my party invite list~~~!
@31:40 i thought you were looking at the sky and zoomed in on some crazy UFO just chillin' and not say a word about it haha
Strange perspective looking out to the lake from the bluff.
thats one unimpressive overlook lol. place is sick. solid section imo. u got me all worried about the bugs tho now
This is the buggy season. Unimpressive? I felt moved by it. The bugs await you....
@@shugemery oh lol i thought the large clearing u were at was the unimpressive overlook. there was a sign when i went last year hahah. Its really cool for sure. One of my favorite spots! Ill bring the deet

We have talked about it. Scared all we will do is spin in a circle....
another great video!!!!
Thankee.
My mesh bag is happy! 😂 Always enjoy, thanks. 🥾🏔🇨🇦❤️
It is always in a cheery mood.
At 7:50 In french, these are called "Quatre-Temps" or in latin : Cornus Canadensis (Bunchberry)
Nice.
Seeing those mosquitoes on your face made Me itch!
I adopt them while out there.
Try the LandJeager from Wisconsin River Meats.
I'll hunt some down.....
I use the backpacker version (the one that connects to an isobutane tank) - and yes, it really does work.
Bet that works real good. Love 'em. Skeets abhor them~~
Shug, I go up north a lot especially at George H. Crosby State Park. I am always with a group of people but I have ask. Do you ever get afraid of camping by yourself? Stuff like; weird noise, yeti if anything, aliens, bears, slenderman or anything? I am from St. Paul, I always want to camping by myself but to chicken to do so.
The one minute mark in this video sums up my thoughts on solo camping....ruclips.net/video/s-MBWU0FQV4/видео.htmlsi=ibouFE-0kMH01hTx

You speak of the chocolate Hobnob!
That is it. I love the Hob Nob. I want a HobNob kabob.
👍👍
Righto and big toe~~
Hey Shug an Kenny 👁🤹🏼🎭
Hey Finn and Kenny.
Just finished watching Frozen on Outdoor Adventures hiking the AT in a hammock in 2019, have you ever thought of thru-hiking the AT?
I really don't have a desire to thru hike the AT. I'd miss my wife and my other life interests. A week or two in the woods is good enough for me at this point. Gotta tend my garden!!!
Hankering, Sauntering, lolligaging.
😊
A few of my favorite things.
Terrific video Shug. Ya the skitters are bad. Do you do a loop or retrace your steps back to the trail head I find the thermal cell works real well. I was in algonquin last week and not one bite.
This was an "in and out." SHT really has no loops.
At 33:00 about that tick : Did you put deet on the back of your calf ? Do you think with deet the tick would not have bit ?
I did. But that tick had mettle and went the full 6 yards. Until I squashed it. A tick hero.
@@shugemery Maybe she was playing football and had to reach the 6 yards line :D Glad you're okay

Since you kinda like drie cured meats, have you ever tried traditional South African Biltong or DroeWors?
I'm gonna have to look into those~~ Thankee.

I think we used it all up past few summers...so no. Ben's Bug Spray. Deet~
FUZZY WOLF POOP hell yeah
Sometimes mine is too.
Need help with my Medaglia Doro Instant Espresso. Just made a cup and must’ve butchered the ratios. It was not good. Any thoughts on amount of Water to Espresso? Guessing you don’t use any creams or sweetners? Think I didn’t use enough or something. Heeeeelllllp!!!
Suit to taste. Try a teaspoon to 8 or ten ounces of water and work up. BUT...it ain't for everyone. It is a strong taste. I go straight up. Good with cream and sugar. Just treat it as any coffee. Not everyone likes it.
