I had a Border Collie 20 years ago. They are high intelligent and very active dogs. After teaching him to translate Russian literature and figuring income tax he slowed down some. He gave great financial advice that is helping me in retirement now. I miss him!
That's stretching it, but I got my BC Tess to scare off-or aggravate a telemarketer, so much he hung up and never called again. Same might work with a toddler. He called, saying he could fix my computer and before I could say it needed no fixing, asked me for my credit card no. None. Checks? Nope. Cash through a money order? Nope, but I could, I told him, he could talk to my financial counselor and called Tess to my speaker phone. "Ask her now" and Tess did her growls talk for about 5 minutes before he hung up. I kissed her and that white tipped tail wagged and wagged. The treat came a moment later.

He wants to be with my wife and me wherever we are, but is a good watchdog and will bark like crazy when strangers show up at the house.

My Border Collie hated riding in the truck her first-year until we moved West-coast to East-coast on a 7-day drive. Within the first few hours her attitude changed. Suddenly, she liked the truck. my family got a minerature collie (sheltie) when i was 10, and she lived to be 18. she hated and was terrified of being in a car. when i got a house, she came to live with me and i lived somewhat near a park, so at least once a week i took both her and a collie that she raised to the park. they both loved the park! so it took no time at all for both dogs to run to the car when i opened the door - instead of going the other direction - because they were usually going there lol. i have had 1 minerature collie, 4 standard collies, and 3 border collies, and although border collies are the absolute smartest dogs there are, i believe that all types of collies, and then herding dogs in general, are smarter than just about any other dog there is.

I am on my fourth border collie in my life, definitely my favorite, the first was a rescue live to about 15, it was painful to have to put him down, but he developed an infection in his feet and the vet that took me to the cleaners was not able to clear it up. The second was another rescue, the sweetest little boy I ever had, but he died having seizures. I knew this when I rescued him that he had epilepsy, will never do that again. This was equally as sad as the first. The third one I gave him up because he did not have enough room to run around, so I gave him to a woman who had 6 other border collies and over 10 acres for them to run around on. She trained him in agility and obedience and he had won many ribbons for agility. This one was a true border collie with herding instincts and he was also an escape artist. I doubt this little guy is still alive but I am sure he live a long and happy life. These dogs are so sweet and so smart. I can't imagine having another breed. So now I come to the fourth, whom I got at 7-8 weeks old, smart as a whip, completely potty trained at three months old. He is now 8 years old and the highlight of my life, would love to breed him or get another, this time a female. All my dogs were male and I really want just one more, a beautiful little girl like Ellie, she is gorgeous. I enjoyed her pulling the baby carriage.
What a beauty she is...congrats on all the training and progress. I am experiencing the same in terms of my BC responding differently with my other family members... consistency is key👌🏽🌺🇿🇦🌹
Thanks for your training tips Arthur. You have a beautiful dog indeed. What a privilege. I have a short paired Border Collie. She is the smartest dog I've ever had and a real delight. These dogs are such a pleasure to have as a pet. So enthusiastic, trainable and smart.
You've done some amazing work with Ali's training. I have a 9 month old Border Collie and she is really attentive and intelligent, it is definitely a rollercoaster but the moments of brilliance they show when you are building up communication makes all worth it. My pup has an amazing fetch now, she knows a ton of tricks but I need to keep up, she is not as patient as Ali, I have no chance with putting treats on her nose.
Ellie has recently being a dork when she fetches. She would grab the ball and run far, like “come chase me and I’ll give the ball to you”. For that reason, I wasn’t able to reteach her to fetch because I could never got the ball back, until she was bored. So a month ago, my neighbour on the street got a border collie. The first question I asked him was “does your dog know how to fetch? The kind of fetch that she would return the ball?” My neighbour was like “not returning the ball is not fetch, dude!” Then I demanded my neighbour’s dog to properly fetch in front of Ellie’s face. And that’ was how Ellie learned fetch. 10 minutes.
Ellie is a beautiful border collie!! I have had 3, my last needed to be euthanized recently at age 14+. Arthur, you are all about the "training". Did you ever think to just watch and learn the amazing things your B.C. can teach you? They are compassionate, fun, extreme athletes, they have a connection to the natural world we couldn't imagine. One summer night, my male B.C sat outside for the longest time. When I went to call him in, he was singing in a high pitched voice along with a chorus of coyotes way up in the hills. How did he know their language?? That beautiful creature taught me to connect with my heart. I truly loved him. Trust that B.C.s have centuries of learning built into them if you watch and listen, your experience will be enhanced. Can you tell me where I can find one of Ellie's family please?
My BC let me know I had Diabetes and when my sugar was too high or low. She also taught my Gypsy Rose Lee pup how to continue this. That was more important than any tricks she might have learnt to impress me.
@@arthurliYT I remember that a vet said that dogs can smell a change in their owner's scent. That would've explained her grandson ( Maxwell Smart)'s ability to know when his owner was about to have a seizure. I believe my having Diabetes also told her the same thing. I rewarded her when she was right and ignored her response when she was wrong-which wasn't often. I believe she instinctively knew how to tell me on her own in time. Why she was able to teach Gypsy and not her own son and his girlfriend is beyond me. Maybe she just knew Gypsy would live the longest and she and the puppy grew quite close before her son and Bo Peep moved here. How does a dog 'know' their owner has cancer? Testing dogs has taught scientists that dogs can tell the difference whether a test wand has a cancer scent on it or not. Sorry, that's all I know; hope it doesn't destroy what I know as I was only able to attain what I knew from reading, asking vets, others who had service dogs, and experience.
My border collie now is also 2 years old i call him wingnut because he is crazy but the best watch dog. You dog looks beautiful and full of life cheers

Hi, time for a trip to the vet to find out the reasons why your collie is slowing down that much. Arthritis is a common issue, especially with dogs that have been extremely active or have run a lot on hard surfaces or have an injury from all the high-speed twisting and turning that they do. Arthritis can be treated with ongoing injections of Cartrophen or Pentosan etc plus some glucosamine and fish oil capsules in their food and some gentle exercise (swimming is great, although avoid very cold water). I have been very lucky to have collies most of my life, with two making 16 years, so fret not and enjoy every day with your dog.
When I let my Border Collie just few seconds alone at home, he is barking soo high and all neighbors complain, I cannot neither go down to buy bread. I tried many things but nothing worked, I tried to show it's ok, gradually increasing the time alone then rewarding when Im back but he continue barking so high when he is alone. What should I do ?
There aren't many channels that acknowledge the dog's desires. I'm strongly in favor of this approach. I want my pup's personality.....I don't want them to to just disappear into a world of commands. I want a respectful bond. My dog has teeth and she uses them to grab things.....She never hurts me and I can feel her pressure reduce when she knows. ...and she knows she can hurt me....or she wouldn't reduce force. That's the bond I like.
i got a kelpie which trained it's self, i only had to be displeased when he tried to cross the road by him self, now he stays on the same side of the road no matter what and wont cross the road unless we are crossing the road, he's been off lead for nearly all his life and we walk everywhere !!!
Thank you for the beautiful video and for your wisdom and loving but effective and consistent approach to interacting with your gorgeous Collie. Best wishes to you, Mr. Arthur Li, and to all for the forthcoming Christmas and New Year Season. From Marian in UK.

Hi Arthur Li. I was wondering if you could make a video on how to potty train a dog. Its just that in the first few days, Awa(our new border collie puppy) has been pooping all over the house.
Our 1 year old BC slobbers a ton when he gets in the car. He always goes to fun places but we can't solve this problem. We don't take him very far because of this which is disappointing because he would love going to other places.
3 days ago My border collie (the one on my profile picture) Just passed :( He was 11 And his name was poncho (Not pancho). He was a great buddy and was surprisingly sweet! Border Collie's are GREAT for young people and loved to play. My border collie liked puddles and killed 16 Possums in his life. He even one day partially rode a bike! They are amazing and fun dogs. Its so unfortunate that he passed :(.
Hi Arthur. Thanks for your time and effort into putting these videos together. As a potential future border collie owner, I've learned a lot of helpful tips from you. Being from the Greater Toronto Area myself, I was curious if you had any breeder recommendations. Also, being this is such an active breed that requires lots of mental and physical stimulation...how does your collie manage being at home alone while you and your wife are at work? Both my spouse and I currently work from home for the foreseeable future, but this can always change. We worry about the difficulties of leaving this breed alone for extended periods of time.
I find as long as your dog is comfortable and secure in a kennel, with something comforting like a chew with plenty of tasty stuff inside to work at, they’re fine. My boy just settles down to nap or chew.
How much exercise do you find they need? Some people say they spend hours exercising/playing while others say the BC's reputation is exaggerated and they can get by with an hour of exercise and they sleep a lot indoors.
Thanks for posting this video, I have just gotten my 9week old BC Bowie. She’s a beautiful but I am worried that I am single and working professional I won’t be able to provide the best life for her. In your opinion, is it too much work for one single dog parent (works full time) flexible working from home arrangement? Your advice would be appreciated ❤
Do you feel like training your border collie improved your realtime / in person communication skills at all? Not meaning to imply that you don't have good communication skills - I wouldn't know, I've only watched this one video. I just noticed the part where you compared teaching a skill to your dog to communicating with people and wanted to ask. Thanks!
Hi, I am planning to buy a BC as a family pet for my kids which are 11 and 13 years old. I really liked this breed so decided to buy but wondering it will suit for our life style. We have a decent backyard not a acreage can provide exercises for nearly 3-4hrs per day. Is it enough for him or need to spend time a lot. It will be in the backyard alone for around 7 hrs after go to work. I am confused.
I wonder what is your take on it. I have a colleague who brings her BC to work sometimes. She is always running around, moving, jumping, touching all us. It makes me stressed. I think she was also a rescue dog. I have a friend who has a BC and she is super gentle, respectful and a good listener and doesn't do this. Why is that?

What a beauty she is...congrats on all the training and progress. I am experiencing the same in terms of my BC responding differently with my other family members... consistency is key👌🏽🌺🇿🇦🌹
Thanks for your training tips Arthur. You have a beautiful dog indeed. What a privilege. I have a short paired Border Collie. She is the smartest dog I've ever had and a real delight. These dogs are such a pleasure to have as a pet. So enthusiastic, trainable and smart.
Thanks for the useful advice!
The kind of fetch that she would return the ball?” My neighbour was like “not returning the ball is not fetch, dude!”
Then I demanded my neighbour’s dog to properly fetch in front of Ellie’s face. And that’ was how Ellie learned fetch. 10 minutes.
Mine just turned two.
She's becoming more manageable.
Beautiful dog and fantastic advice wonderfully delivered. Thanks
Thank you for the update! Your videos have been enjoyable and so helpful in training Selene, my border collie pup! 🙂
Бордер колли самая любимая,лучшая!!!
Great videos! Ellie looks sooo much like my Border Collie Cubby! Gorgeous puppies.
By the way, Cubby was born on February 4th, 2018. When was Ellie born?
@@mspannarbor Hi Michael, Ellie has a close birthday to Cubby's! She was born on Jan 26, 2018.
A beautiful video. Thank you.
Thank you.
Awww so gorgeous! Well done Ellie!
As a dog trainer, I like the process you two have . Keep up the great work
She is beautiful. Congratulations on your training. We have a 7 month old. They are wonderful animals :-) x
How is your 7-month old doing now?
My BC let me know I had Diabetes and when my sugar was too high or low. She also taught my Gypsy Rose Lee pup how to continue this. That was more important than any tricks she might have learnt to impress me.
That’s incredible! How did she do it? Mind sharing a little bit more of the story?
Ellie is a beautiful dog!
Thanks. I think she knows because she enjoys looking at the mirror and smiles!
My border collie now is also 2 years old i call him wingnut because he is crazy but the best watch dog. You dog looks beautiful and full of life cheers
I love border collies but my mother is scared of dogs so I have to wait till I grow up then I can buy a border collie meanwhile I learned alot about border collies so I am ready to take care of my new border collie! Thanks for the information!😊😊😊
Thanks for the new video!
Our pleasure!
She's beautiful,we have 9 year old collie who slowing up big time,it's horrible to watch and well done with Ali.
Wow.... great and awesome job to you both. If you aren’t a professional dog trainer....you absolutely could be
Nothing better than when my sons collie comes to greet me
Jumps into my arms on command
Such a beautiful collie ❤️😍
Thank you for the beautiful video and for your wisdom and loving but effective and consistent approach to interacting with your gorgeous Collie. Best wishes to you, Mr. Arthur Li, and to all for the forthcoming Christmas and New Year Season. From Marian in UK.
My sincere thanks for you kind words, Marian. Your positivity made my day and probably makes people around you feel encouraged and supported. I can feel your warmth across the pond in Canada. I wish you and your family a fantastic holiday as well. Best, Arthur.
Aww good job with her 🥰
I cannot wait to get my dog. I've been trying to find one anywhere in the US and i hope in the next three months to have a lovely girl like her!
Did you find a border collie yet. I know someone in California you can contact..she has puppies
Usefull advices, thx
More videos please Arthur!
I had a border collie once, he eventually grew smart, turned evil. Trough science he transformed himself into a human and named himself Carlos mencia.
I'm getting a border collie puppy in 1 week!!!:)
Good luck! Please keep me posted!
Hi Arthur Li. I was wondering if you could make a video on how to potty train a dog. Its just that in the first few days, Awa(our new border collie puppy) has been pooping all over the house.
Can you please let me know where you got your border collie I really want one please and thank you
Heidy Zhang did you get it
@@bsci01 yes! we've had her for 2 months. She's very playful and cuddly!
Ellie is a great Dog!
!!! I need to teach my Bowie to put away his toys. It’ll help a lot with keeping my small space tidy And help keep him entertained
Beautiful video.
Thank you George.
The best breed ever❤
Our 1 year old BC slobbers a ton when he gets in the car. He always goes to fun places but we can't solve this problem. We don't take him very far because of this which is disappointing because he would love going to other places.
Seems like a lot of time and hard work to train it to that level
My border collie is 3, he still runs around our farm all day 🤪 he is very sweet thi
Sorry to hear about pancho
Sorry to hear that... They are amazing!
We have 6 month old border collie Archibald ❤️
Collies, the best.
My boy just settles down to nap or chew.
what a fantastic dog i lost mine 3 weeks ago they are so loyal to there owners mine was called benji
Sorry to hear your loss David. It would be too frightening to picture that day for ourselves. I trust Benji is in a great place now. Merry Christmas.
your border collie is gorgeous and one pretty dog
Thanks a lot! I will tell her!
Me watching this with my 2 year old border collie sleeping on me
What kind of dog food do you feed her? She’s got a beautiful coat!
Go ellie. Good girl!
People who was here since day 1 😸
Thank you for your support!
Great video of a BC ‘
I’m Collecting my BC Pup
In 2 Weeks time ‘
Exciting time’s 👋 🇬🇧
Great video, thank you! Where did you learn all of these training skills?
Your english got way better.
Thank you. That means a lot.
My Border Collie is now 8 years old... She was given to me and expected a male,.. Added I did not know she was a Border Collie.
Great video!
Thanks!
Ellie: I am 2.
*A lot of Discord DM incoming*
*FBI Agent: FBI OPEN UP!*
I apologize if you have already answered this but where did you get her if you don’t mind? Many thanks.
well done!
Hi im Bettie i am so little i born in 30 october 2020 im 3 monts
Quick reminder: Zak George puppy is almost as old as Ellie in this video and she acts like a 4 month old
Nice Samonella music
i want one
Sure. That's how I felt when we had one. Now we have two!
How did you learn her to brush her teeth?
Hi, I am planning to buy a BC as a family pet for my kids which are 11 and 13 years old. I really liked this breed so decided to buy but wondering it will suit for our life style. We have a decent backyard not a acreage can provide exercises for nearly 3-4hrs per day. Is it enough for him or need to spend time a lot. It will be in the backyard alone for around 7 hrs after go to work. I am confused.
👍👍, be safe 🦊
Hey I want to buy border collie
Awesome video. Would you consider making a video on what you feed her? (Raw diet?)
Thanks! I have just made video on how we feed her. Please check it out!
I’m a lot less strict on my dog now that’s she’s an old girl. 🙂
